From Human to Skeleton: Revived with Infinite System Crystals
Chapter 858 - 858: The Name Under The TapeWaddell kept the red tape on the floor and made everyone work around it.
The tape looked stupid in the middle of a haunted laundry corridor. Waddell could use stupid. People respected doors, seals, warning lights, and men with guns. They argued with tape until their shoes touched the line, then their bodies remembered kindergarten and stopped.
He used that.
"Anyone who needs to feel important can carry cots away from the wall, and anyone who wants to investigate can do it after Jade clears their name, hands, shoes, and breathing habits."
The teacher with the mop handle moved two cots without complaining.
Tyree stayed near the laundry doors with his fire reduced to a heat shimmer against his knuckles. His offended look told Jade he was obeying the order instead of negotiating with it.
Kieran watched the vent cover.
Jade watched Kieran.
The marked tablet stayed facedown on the cafeteria table. The paper map sat beside it, ugly hallway names spreading across the building like a bad joke that had learned discipline.
Caelin's aide had renamed the service closet Lunchbox.
Jade approved. Nobody feared Lunchbox enough to pray at it.
"Cover visible name tags in the west hall," Jade said into the radio. "Do not read them aloud, do not correct the fake names, and do not let anyone turn a label into a memorial speech."
Caelin looked at her through the feed.
"That may upset families if they see it later."
"Families can hear the verified report later from a person. Room Four gets nothing clean now."
The aide wrote that down too.
In the laundry corridor, Waddell repeated the order with less polish.
"Cover any name you see. Say one aloud, and Caelin gets you for cursed-paperwork duty."
Tyree glanced over.
"You should not threaten people with cruel punishments during a crisis."
"Then stop making me invent useful ones."
The second test arrived without music.
The service closet door knocked once from the inside.
Every person in the corridor stopped moving.
Waddell lifted one hand and kept his voice low enough that people had to listen instead of react.
"Nobody answers a door that learned manners from a vent."
The closet knocked again.
Kieran moved to the side of the door rather than in front of it. Her hand lowered toward the blade at her hip, then stopped. The old rhythm wanted a warrior's answer, so she made herself give the hall a guard's patience.
The third knock came from the floor.
A brown evidence tag slid under the closet door and stopped at the edge of the red tape.
Waddell saw the printed letters before he could stop seeing them.
JANICE BELL.
One of the soldiers reached for his phone by habit.
Waddell pointed the mop handle at his wrist.
"If that camera comes up, I will make the phone part of the evidence pile and make you explain why Room Four needed your help."
The soldier lowered his hand.
Caelin's aide saw it on the feed and turned her own phone face down.
"Public channel gets no casualty name confirmation from this room," she said.
Jade kept her hand on the paper map.
"Good, because we protect the people standing here before we feed the public."
The teacher inhaled sharply.
Waddell pointed at her before the sound became a word.
"You keep that name behind your teeth."
She clamped her mouth shut and backed up.
Behind the cafeteria counter, Rose moved closer to Mason before Jade finished turning her head. Mara pulled the blanket higher around the boy's shoulders without waking him. Kieran the Hunter saw it on the feed and kept her body between the vent and the hall.
Jade's bad eye pulled toward the name through a wall, a table, and two cameras.
She pressed her palm flat against the paper map until the Lunchbox square bent under her fingers.
"Janice Bell died protecting children, and nobody in this hallway uses her name to make another child answer."
The route room took the sentence hard.
Ty felt it hit the table under his palms.
The paper beside Omina's sealed verdict opened a narrow margin.
FIELD ASSET SECOND TEST DETECTED.
DECEASED FAMILY NAME PRESENTED.
JJ's face changed.
"It listened to the name order and brought a name anyway."
Heissman leaned in without touching the paper.
"It is testing whether the shelter will treat grief as permission once the grief belongs to a dead soldier instead of the living fiancee."
Ty's fingers dug against the table edge.
Yun-Jin stood within reach and kept her hand open at her side.
"Say what you want to break before your hands choose for you."
"Right now I want the closet ripped off its hinges."
"You named the wrong room, and you know the closet is only bait."
"I want the thing behind the closet broken before it learns another way in."
"Closer, but still cheap unless you name the idea Room Four wants tested."
Ty forced his hands flat.
"I want to break the idea that a dead person's name can pull a living child into the bill."
Omina wrote before Room Four could turn the anger into pursuit.
"Deceased family name cannot answer for living child, shelter refusal is active conduct, and loved name response is denied."
The margin resisted loved name response.
JJ put both hands on the table.
"A kid sleeping behind a counter gave no answer, a dead aunt's tag gave no summons, and a hallway flinching gave no consent."
The line took weight from her voice.
Waddell crouched at the red tape and pulled a strip from the roll without crossing the line. He folded the tape over itself until the sticky side faced out, then pressed it down over the printed name with the mop handle.
The tag twitched once.
Tyree's fire rose by a finger's width.
"Tyree, keep it at body heat," Jade said through the radio.
Tyree shut the flame down until the skin over his knuckles steamed.
"I am going to complain about this when the building stops flirting with murder."
"Your complaint is logged under Lunchbox."
Waddell pressed the tape harder over the name.
The printed letters bled through the red strip.
Kieran reached into her sleeve and pulled free a plain black cloth. She tossed it to Waddell, who caught it by reflex and dropped it over the tag.
"Names hidden by panic still leak," Kieran said. "Names covered by rule hold longer."
Jade heard the difference.
"Caelin's aide, write the rule that dead family names stay covered by shelter order until a living family member asks for them in a safe room."
The aide wrote fast.
Caelin kept the objection behind his teeth, one of his better choices all day.
His aide added a second line without being asked.
"Public office will not confirm, repeat, clip, or trend casualty names from the shelter incident until family contact happens through a protected room."
Jade looked at Caelin through the feed.
"Keep that line ugly and official enough that nobody can trim it into comfort."
Caelin nodded once.
"Ugly and official is within my office's skill set today."
The aide's pen slowed over the private copy.
"Do I write her full name in the protected packet?"
Jade looked at the covered tag, then at the counter where Rose had Mason shielded from the room.
"Write it once where family services can find it, and nowhere the hallway can hear us."
Caelin made the routing note himself. Family services, protected file, no public casualty confirmation.
In the route room, the margin gave another answer.
SHELTER ORDER ACCEPTED.
DECEASED FAMILY NAME CANNOT CREATE CHILD RESPONSE.
LOVED NAME TEST FAILED.
Ty let the breath out of his bones slowly enough that Yun-Jin stopped watching his hands first.
Jade saw his shoulders change on the feed and looked away before the relief could make her soft in the wrong room.
The closet stopped knocking.
Waddell stayed crouched with the mop handle across his knees.
"Nobody celebrates until Lunchbox apologizes in writing and signs the apology."
The teacher gave a shaky laugh, then covered her mouth like she had broken a rule.
Kieran shook her head once.
"Laughter is not rhythm unless you give it pattern, so let it pass."
"Good, because this hallway owes me at least one normal human sound," Waddell said.
In the prison room outside trackable time, the gray glove lay beside the flute case with two fingers bent inward.
The human world wall erased the Janice Bell tag from its active test column.
A new line opened beneath the failed result.
LOVED NAME RESPONSE FAILED.
PUBLIC BODY RECOGNITION TEST PREPARED.
A split frame opened under the line.
On one side, Zunoder's borrowed face carried a rescue clip the public already wanted to trust.
On the other, Bone Half sat at the sealed verdict table with no human skin left to make the fear easier.
The wall waited to see which shape people would call real first.
