The prison wall struck Omina's floor before the Reaper finished pulling Ty through.

Stone drove the broken table sideways. The tank rolled off its record boxes, and Jade caught the gold rim with her shoulder while JJ grabbed both feed pumps. The seventh notch burned through Jade's sleeve.

"Five minutes and forty-two seconds before this support fails."

The Reaper tightened its fingers around Ty's skull.

Omina stepped over the split table and planted her green hilt against its wrist.

"Remove your hand from my witness before I remove the arm."

Green bars closed around the Reaper's forearm. Its hand stayed locked while the bars dragged the arm away from its shoulder, stretching the joint beneath the robe.

Ty shoved both thumbs beneath the Reaper's fingers. Bone scraped bone around his temples. The grip opened far enough for him to turn, though the creature caught his jaw before he cleared it.

When Zunoder seized the Reaper's elbow with Ty's old hand, white lines moved across the borrowed skin. One ran into the hand holding Ty. Another followed the old body's wrist and stopped at Zunoder's shoulder. The Reaper turned between two bodies carrying pieces of the same dead man.

"This body remains evidence, but evidence can still lift weight."

Omina drove the hilt lower. The green bars pulled the Reaper toward Zunoder.

Kieran came through the violet crack on Jade's tether and cut across the Reaper's knuckles. Gold fire opened three finger joints. Ty tore his jaw free and dropped beneath the arm.

The scythe struck after him. Its hook missed his spine and buried itself in the prison wall that had entered the room.

The wall split down the middle and dropped Erebos through the opening with Kegaku held against his side. His torn chest left blood across the stone. Kegaku landed on his feet, lost his balance without the grafted arm, and caught himself against an iron door buried inside the wall.

Three bent hooks had been hammered into its center, and the curse around Kegaku's neck pulled toward them.

He grabbed his collar and staggered back. The hooks moved beneath the rust as though something on the other side had drawn them tight.

Kieran turned her blade from the Reaper to the door.

"That mark knows your neck better than Erebos admits."

"It belonged to Sadle before Master removed the whole cell."

Erebos pushed himself upright while keeping one hand over the open scar in his chest.

"I took the door because its sentence followed him beyond the planet."

The tank woman pressed her returned graft against the glass. Its teeth opened around the failed sixth wire, and her voice came through the palm.

"Open it because the pressure room was built beneath that sentence."

Kegaku turned toward the tank. Blood had soaked through the sealed end of his sleeve.

"Your hand was attached on Sadle after my execution failed?"

"Your rescue gave Erebos a living body to test the connection."

The answer stopped him with his hand still raised toward the hooks.

The tank rolled again as another length of prison wall entered Omina's room. Jade held the rim while Yun-Jin dragged the violet crack away from the collapsing stone. JJ kept the pump hoses from folding under the base.

The seventh notch reached the color of heated brass.

"We can discuss who used whom after she has another wire."

Jade put Kegaku's good hand against the first hook.

His curse tightened until the marks rose above his collar. The hook turned beneath his palm and pulled a chain through the door. Metal links emerged one at a time, coated in fluid that smelled of old medicine. Kegaku bit down on his tongue and kept pulling while the chain opened the skin across his palm.

The second hook turned when his blood reached it. The third refused him.

Erebos reached past Kegaku and placed two fingers beside the final hook.

"That lock answers to the person who interrupted the sentence."

Kegaku caught his wrist before he touched the hook.

"You already tied her prison into your bones. I open this one."

"Your neck cannot survive the final turn without support."

"Then support me without pretending that means ownership."

Erebos placed his hand against Kegaku's back. Shadow entered the curse marks but stopped short of the hooks. Kegaku gripped the third piece of iron and turned it against the pull around his throat.

The curse cut through his collar. A narrow ring opened around his neck, bright enough to show lines climbing into his jaw. He forced the hook halfway around.

The iron door opened inward against its buried hinges.

Air struck the room carrying ash, rain, and the bitter odor rising from hot pipes. Beyond the threshold, an execution platform leaned over a stone trench. Iron pipes ran beneath its boards and vanished into a building with half its roof missing.

The final hook tore itself out of Kegaku's hand.

He dropped while Erebos caught him under the arms.

Omina looked through the doorway, then at the wall crushing her proceeding.

"The tank, pumps, witnesses, and armed intruder move as collected evidence."

Zunoder ducked beneath the Reaper's swing. The scythe cut through two green bars and took a piece of his coat, but he kept the old body between the blade and Ty.

"Your collection order includes the creature trying to kill us?"

"It entered my room without answering scope, so the answer is yes."

Omina drew her hilt beneath the tank. Green bars formed a low rail under the gold rim, replacing the record boxes as the floor tilted. Yun-Jin tied her violet thread around the front bar. JJ set both pumps on the broken table leaf and kicked its remaining legs away.

Jade checked the seventh notch while Omina shaped the rail.

"Four minutes remain, and the door is narrower than the tank."

Ty put one sickle into the stone beside the frame and pulled. Kieran drove her blade into the opposite side. Gold fire opened the mortar while Ty's black fire spread through the old blocks.

The doorway widened by the width of one tank mount.

Erebos dragged Kegaku across the threshold. The curse marks around Kegaku's neck pulled toward the execution platform, forcing him to crawl the final few feet.

The Reaper abandoned Zunoder and moved for the open door.

Omina struck the floor with her hilt. Every surviving green bar crossed behind the tank and formed a moving fence. The Reaper cut through the first row while Yun-Jin hauled the rail toward Sadle.

JJ pushed the pump sled with one hand and worked the feed controls with the other. Jade held the sixth clamp around the severed graft. The woman inside the tank bent her returned fingers around the wire as the rim scraped through the widened frame.

Stone broke above Jade's head. Ty caught the largest piece across his shoulders and threw it into the Reaper's path. The scythe divided the block, buying him enough room to pass through after the tank.

Kieran came last. She kept her blade against the Reaper's hook until Omina crossed beside her.

"Your collection has one entrance and no prepared exit."

"Then the collector remains responsible for building one."

Omina pulled her hilt through the threshold. The green fence followed, bringing the Reaper across with its scythe trapped between the bars.

The Sadle door slammed hard enough to shake rain from its frame.

Its frame tore free of Erebos's prison wall and landed alone at the edge of the execution platform. Rain hit the tank glass. The gold rim settled over two buried pipes that began knocking beneath the stone.

The tank woman lifted her graft from the sixth wire and pointed toward the roofless building.

"The old pressure bed remains below that building, but Sadle will demand him first."

Every chain beneath the execution platform pulled tight.

Kegaku's curse dragged him across the wet stone until Erebos caught his ankle.

Under the platform, something struck the boards three times.

A rusted blade rose above the execution block and turned toward Kegaku's neck.
