Chapter 259: Secondhand Smoke

The party was in full swing by the time Lukas started to feel bored.

There was only so many faces you could memorize until they all started to look the same.

His job was easy, but that also made it repetitive and boring.

He only needed to stand to the side, watching the faces moving from the door and into the ballroom, while keeping an eye out for any suspicious behavior.

The only thing that gave the job any hint of excitement was the dressings.

The men came in different variations of suits, as this was a formal party.

It wasn’t anything extravagant, but it was quite nice to note down the style and wonder which ones he’d look good in.

He was far more fascinated by the various colors of the suits they were wearing.

He’d almost forgotten that suits could be made out of different colored fabrics that were not just black and blue.

But he quickly came to realize that the color of their suits were not chosen arbitrarily.

The colors were chosen due to things like allegiance.

The Le Fays wore the same colors as their family insignia, and the same was true for the guests.

But it was the dresses that made things more colorful.

Not only were their dresses elegant and graceful, they had more freedom when it came to mixing and matching colors.

There was also the jewelries and accessories they had on. He was sure the total value of accessories the guests wore to the party would be enough to buy several plots inside a dungeon city.

Even through the door, he could see glimpses of the cars driven in by the guests, and he knew that damaging even one would be enough to send him into the kind of debt people commit suicide to escape from.

But what surprised him the most were the guests themselves.

He’d been expecting everyone attending to be rich and powerful, but that wasn’t the case.

Not in the wealth category, of course. Everyone present was wealthy, but not everyone was powerful.

He’d sensed quite a few Awakeners mingling among the Adepts, and they were treated with the same respect given to the Adepts.

No matter how hard Lukas thought about it, it didn’t make sense.

Why would someone be this wealthy and still be at the Awakener rank?

Which meant things weren’t as simple as he thought they were.

Either way, there was no need for him to think about it.

At this point of the party, the flow of guests arriving had trickled down to just a handful of latecomers, and the only people present in the entrance hall were those engaged in private conversations, or one or two who wanted to smoke away from the ballroom but not outside the building.

After a few minutes of watching over an almost empty hall, while hearing the soft sounds of people talking and music drifting in from the ballroom, he was starting to feel sleepy.

He blinked hard, trying to stop himself from falling asleep.

After a few seconds, his eyes widened. Was this an attack?!

His eyes went to the others stationed in the hall.

A few were like him, looking sleepy, while most of them were still alert.

So, it wasn’t a skill. He was just new to the job, and somehow, low on sleep.

He managed to suppress a yawn when the man walked out of the ballroom.

He was well dressed, with a perfectly fitted suit that made him look like a celebrity.

The fabric was colored a deep burgundy, and Lukas frowned, trying to remember if there were any other guests sporting the same color in the party.

There was none.

The man reached into his inner pocket without breaking stride, pulling out a cigarette.

Lukas didn’t see what he used to light it, just a brief movement of the fingers and then the soft glow of the tip catching.

The man was roughly Lukas’s height, and with red hair that was pulled into a ponytail, but still looked like it had been styled recently. A pair of golden earrings caught the light each time he turned his head.

He stopped a few paces away from Lukas, angled slightly towards the open doors, and took a long draw from the cigarette.

He exhaled slowly, and the smoke curled out and drifting sideways on the still air directly to where Lukas was standing.

Under normal circumstances, standing in someone’s secondhand smoke would have meant watering eyes and a cough or two at minimum, since Lukas wasn’t a smoker himself.

But Lukas’s constitution wasn’t normal anymore. The smoke reached him, passed over him, and meant nothing.

The man glanced over.

He looked at Lukas for a moment, then at the smoke moving between them, then back at Lukas. A slow smile appeared on his face.

"Are you dedicated to your post," the man said, "or just plain stupid?"

Lukas met his eyes.

His mind raced, taking the scene before him into account.

The man’s posture was relaxed, and his tone was more amused than hostile.

He wasn’t reaching for anything, and wasn’t scanning the room.

This wasn’t a threat.

But that didn’t mean Lukas was going to provoke him either. Better to give an answer expected from a guard.

"This is my post, sir," Lukas said. "I don’t leave it."

The man raised his brows, the smile staying in place.

"Dedication. I can respect that." He took another draw, tilting his head slightly. "But let me ask you something. If the ceiling came down right where you’re standing, what would you do?"

"Move," Lukas said.

"So you’d move for falling stone." The man stepped closer, closing some of the distance between them.

He exhaled slowly and deliberately, the smoke going directly into Lukas’s face this time. He held Lukas’s gaze the entire time.

"But not for this," he said.

He paused for a few seconds.

"What does that make me?" he asked. "Are you saying I’m less important than a piece of falling stone?"
