Ding!

Lukas heard the chime half a second before the message appeared before him.

[Quest: You Are The Most High, Young Master]

[Soothe the Young Master’s ego]

He blinked as the notification hovered right in front of his face, brightly blocking his vision of the man in front of him.

Of all the times a message could appear, why did it have to be now?

He kept his face blank as he dismissed it, his eyes still on the man in front of him.

He ran through his options quickly.

If he moved now, stepping away from the smoke after being called out for not moving, it would look like submission to the provocation.

The Young Master might see that as victory and push further, trying to see how far he could be pushed.

If he stayed exactly as he was, holding his ground without a word, the man was already tipping towards offended and silence would only make it worse.

So what was the middle ground?

Was there even one?

The man’s expression shifted. The amusement didn’t leave entirely, but it became more dangerous, his voice dropping to signal he wasn’t in the mood for anything less than Lukas’ full attention.

"Are you ignoring me right now?"

Lukas moved immediately, his eyes widening as he shook his head.

"Not at all," he said. "I would never."

This would have to be his strategy. The one weapon that worked most often on young masters.

Flattery.

He took half a breath and committed.

"I apologize if it seemed that way. The truth is, I didn’t want to move." He kept his voice sincere, as if he was speaking to someone he idolized. "I was honored to receive it."

The man’s brow shifted. "Honored."

"To be in the presence of someone of your bearing." Lukas continued talking before the confusion could turn back into irritation.

"The moment you walked out, I could see it. The way you carry yourself. I knew immediately that I was standing before nobility."

He gave a small, respectful incline of his head. "I didn’t want to step away from that. Even if it meant discomfort, I considered it a privilege."

The man stared at him.

For a long moment, nothing moved between them. Lukas held eye contact, keeping his expression open.

Then the man’s shoulders dropped slightly, the tension going out of them. A low sound left him, somewhere between a laugh and an exhale.

He pulled a long, final drag from the cigarette, held it for a second, then tossed it aside.

The tip scattered sparks against the floor before going dark.

He stepped forward and placed one hand on Lukas’s shoulder, patting it twice.

"Keep up the good work," he said with a small grin.

Then he turned and walked back through the entrance hall and into the ballroom, hands settling into his pockets.

Ding!

[Congratulations, you have cleared the quest!]

Lukas watched him go.

He kept his face composed until the man had fully disappeared into the crowd beyond the doorway. Then he let out a slow breath through his nose.

In that instant, he committed the face to memory.

That red hair, golden earrings, and burgundy suit. Adept ranked aura, though the exact sub-rank had been impossible to pin down.

The man hadn’t given enough away. He could have been E-rank or S-rank, and Lukas genuinely couldn’t tell which one from what he’d felt.

That alone was worth remembering.

There was no reason to make enemies at a job.

Whatever tension had just passed between them, it had ended without a fight, and Lukas had no intention of starting one. He’d done what needed doing.

But a deserted dungeon was a different matter entirely.

There would be no distinction between guests and guards, and no contract with the Le Fay family to consider.

In a place like that, things had a way of resolving themselves differently.

He wasn’t one to kill others simply for something small like this.

But he was one to get his get back.

And there were ways to make someone pay without taking their life.

Lukas smiled to himself, discarding the thought. There would be time for that later.

He straightened, rolling his shoulders back, and turned his attention to the entrance hall.

The drowsiness that had been creeping up on him during the slow stretch of the night was gone entirely.

Whether he wanted to or not, he was now completely alert.

The night passed slowly, and he didn’t drop his guard once, keeping his attention moving between the entrance hall and the trickle of guests filtering in and out as time wore on.

Luckily, there were no more confrontations or suspicious movements.

The guests moved, drank, talked, and eventually began to leave in the same way they’d arrived.

He’d half expected to see Morgana at some point during the night.

If this was a Le Fay event, it stood to reason that members of the family would be present, and he’d caught glimpses of people whose bearing and colors suggested exactly that.

But Morgana herself never crossed his line of sight. He noted the absence and moved on. He wasn’t being paid enough to track the family’s attendance record.

The building emptied in stages. The guests first, then the stragglers, then the catering team.

As instructed, Lukas walked the grounds when the last of them were gone.

He moved through each section methodically, checking corners and testing doors, making sure nothing had slipped in during the noise of the night or slipped out carrying something it shouldn’t.

Everything was as it should be.

He made his way to the mustering point.

The other guards were trickling in slowly, arriving in ones and twos.

"Valentine."

He turned to see Nic was walking through the gathering crowd towards him, a grin already on his face.

"How was your night?" Nic asked, falling into step beside him.

"Quiet," Lukas said. "Mostly."

"Walk with me."

They moved away from the others, putting enough distance between themselves and the group that their voices wouldn’t carry.

Nic glanced at him sideways. "I saw how you handled that guest. The one who got in your face."

Lukas said nothing.

"That was good thinking," Nic continued. "You made him back down without causing a scene. A lot of people in your position would’ve let their pride take over and turned it into something ugly."

He shook his head. "You didn’t. That matters in this line of work."

He reached over and patted Lukas on the back.

"There’ll be a bonus added to your pay. You earned it." He paused. "And because you handled yourself the way you did, there’s something I want to talk to you about."
