Chapter 261: Secret Mission

Nic kept his voice low, his eyes doing a casual sweep of the area around them before he spoke.

"Next month, I have a mission coming up," he said. "It’s top secret, but I feel you’re the kind of person that suits this mission. I’m putting together a small team, and I can put your name forward for a spot on it."

Lukas looked at him. "What kind of mission?"

"I can’t say."

"What’s the objective?"

"Can’t say that either."

Lukas studied the man’s face. "What can you tell me?"

Nic smiled. "The pay is high. Higher than tonight, and much higher than most jobs you’d find at your rank."

He grinned at Lukas, trying to gauge his reaction. "That’s all I can give you right now."

Lukas thought about it. This was a mission with no details, no objective, and no way to assess the risk properly.

In almost any other situation, that alone would be enough to walk away from it. But Nic was connected to the Le Fay family, and the Le Fay family had already proven that working with them came with real benefits.

A top secret mission at this level wasn’t likely to be something trivial. And if he positioned himself as a crucial partner, they would be more likely to support his rise in both business and power.

Hopefully.

"Can I have some time to think about it?" Lukas asked.

With a decision like this, there was nothing wrong with discussing it with his wives first.

Nic’s expression didn’t change. "I need an answer now. The nature of this mission doesn’t allow for back and forth. Either you’re in or you’re not, and I move to the next person."

Lukas was quiet for a moment.

The risk was real, but so was the opportunity.

"I’m in," he said.

Nic’s grin returned, wider this time. He stuck out his hand.

"Good man." Lukas shook it. "You made the right call."

"I hope so," Lukas said.

"You will." Nic released his hand, already turning back towards the group. "We’ll be in touch when the time comes. Until then, keep your head down."

Lukas gave the man a nod before making his way back to the group.

He found Melody and Akira standing together near the edge of the gathering, both of them looking as composed as they had at the start of the night, if a little quieter.

"Did anything happen on your end?" he asked.

"Nothing worth mentioning," Akira said.

Melody shook her head. "It was relatively quiet all night. You?"

"Mostly quiet," Lukas said.

Before he could say more, the three S-rank women moved to the front of the group, positioning themselves where everyone could see them.

The low murmur of conversation around them died down without anyone being asked.

The woman in the center spoke first.

"You all conducted yourselves well tonight," she said. "The event concluded without incident, the grounds were secured, and every post was held through to the end."

Her eyes swept across the group with a smile on her face. "That reflects well on each of you and on the Le Fay name."

The woman on her left gave a small nod, and a moment later Lukas felt his bank card warm slightly in his spatial ring.

He reached in and checked the balance.

His brow went up.

A few hundred thousand gold coins, sitting there from a single night’s work.

He hadn’t exactly been running through dungeons or risking his life, so it was quite the pay. All he’d done was stand in an entrance hall, memorize faces, and talk a red haired man out of a confrontation.

For that kind of work, the number on his card was more than generous.

He slipped the card back and looked up.

"Thank you for your service tonight," the woman in the center said. "We hope to work with many of you again."

The three of them stepped back, and Nic moved forward to take their place, turning to face the group with his hands in his pockets.

"Alright," he said. "That’s a wrap. Does anyone still have something to take care of before we head back?"

He looked around, but nobody moved.

"Good." He raised his hand. "Then we’re done here."

He brought his hand down and the courtyard vanished.

They reappeared in the living room of the dorm building, and the energy in the room shifted immediately.

People began relaxing their posture, and the professional demeanor they’d been maintaining through the night was quickly replaced by the noise of people having conversations and winding down.

Nic raised a hand, pulling the attention of the room back to him one final time.

"Before everyone disappears," he said, loud enough to be heard by even those still murmuring among themselves, "you’ve got two options."

"The bunks are still available if you want to sleep here tonight and head out in the morning. Or you can leave now." He looked around the room. "Either way, you’ve earned it. Good luck out there."

He gave the room a single nod, then he disappeared.

The group began breaking apart immediately, some people already moving towards the hallway and the bunks, with others heading for the exit.

Lukas looked at Melody and Akira, and neither of them needed to say anything.

They moved towards the door.

As they made their way through the room and down the stairs, Lukas exchanged nods with a few of the faces he’d committed to memory over the course of the evening.

Outside, the night air was cool. Their car sat exactly where they’d left it, untouched.

Lukas unlocked it and they climbed in. He put his hands on the wheel, pushed his mana through, and pulled out onto the street.

The city was quieter at this hour, and he followed the route back without needing the map.

"Something happened tonight," he said, after a few minutes of quiet.

He told them about the red haired man.

He told them about the cigarette, the smoke, the question about falling stone, and the system quest that had appeared out of nowhere demanding he soothe the man’s ego.

By the time he finished, Melody’s expression wasn’t exactly nice.

"If we ever see him again," she said, "we’ll make him pay for that."

"Agreed," Akira said, without hesitation.

Lukas laughed. "We probably won’t. A man like that moves in different circles."

Akira shrugged from the back seat. "Who knows. We might just see him tomorrow."

Lukas couldn’t help but chuckle. "Yeah, right."
