Gathering Husbands with a System in a Game Like World [BL]
Chapter 63: The chairman’s offerElias could hardly believe his eyes, Kai was standing in front of him, alive, unharmed, and apparently completely incapable of understanding the effect his appearance had on someone who had spent the last several hours convinced that he might never see him again.
Elias narrowed his eyes as he noticed the unmistakable reversion of Kai’s disguise, his hair, the dark hair he’d worn throughout their time on the road was gone, in its place was the pale, almost luminous white hair Elias remembered from when they’d first met and so for a moment Elias simply stared because it felt like he was seeing a long lost lover.
Kai noticed.
"What?"
Elias blinked.
"Your hair."
Kai instinctively touched it.
"Oh. That."
"Why the change?"
"I got tired of the disguise."
"Really." Elias raised a brow, Kai smiled, he saw through his bullshit instantly. Classic Elias.
"Your colleagues took it down somehow, i just know i woke up wet in the same condition as you are right now"
Elias studied Kai closely, his eyes darting around searching for injuries.
"Are you hurt?"
Kai frowned.
"No."
Elias looked him over the more, adamantly searching for any speck of hurt
"You’re sure?"
"Yes."
"Your wrists?"
"Fine."
"Your neck?"
"its fine." kai said touching his neck mildly.
"Anywhere else?"
Kai sighed.
"I’m fine, Elias."
"Did anyone touch you inappropriately?" He asked, Kai instantly remembered the creepy investigator who boaderline almost raped him, he wanted to tell Elias about it but for some reason decided that he couldn’t. There was no point. Aster took care of it anyway.
"No, you don’t have to worry"
"Are you sure?"
"I am fine Elias, trust me"
Elias finally relaxed, only slightly, then Kai’s eyes dropped to the restraints.
"You, however, don’t look fine."
"I’m fine."
Kai stared at him, Elias stared back.
"Don’t steal my line."
Elias gave him a big smirk and kai’s mouth twitched, then his expression hardened.
"You actually infiltrated the Dome."
"Yes."
"By yourself? What were you thinking?"
"well, i needed to save you and i didn’t do it by myself i had some.....help" Elias said and gestured towards the old master who stood in complete scilence fondling his goatee with his eyes closed. Kai looked at him and discovered that he hadn’t notice him at all.
"Oh, Hi " he waved at the man who opened one of his eyes and grunted in reply. Kai didn’t think anything of it anyways. He turned back to Elias.
"you know you are going to be executed right?"
"A probability"
"Don’t just play this of, you always do that"
"I am not playing this off"
"Then Why did you do something so dangerous?" Elias stared at him as though the answer should have been obvious.
"Like i said they took you."
Kai’s anger faltered, for several seconds neither spoke, then Kai shook his head.
"That doesn’t make it reasonable."
"I never said it was."
"You could’ve died."
"So could you."
"That’s different."
"How?"
"Because..."
Kai stopped, he clearly didn’t have an answer or maybe he didn’t want to drop the bomb that he was good looking and could fish out a pardon on his own anyways because he had afterall managed to charm the freaking chairman of the organisation.
Elias took this as a gag and smiled faintly.
"Exactly."
Kai folded his arms.
"I still think you’re insane."
"I’ve been called worse."
Despite himself Kai laughed, it was quiet but Elias heard it, that was enough to make him beam, then Kai’s expression became serious again.
"There’s something else."
"What?"
"The Chairman."
Elias immediately stopped smiling.
"What about him, did he touch you?"
"No."
"Then?"
"He is here."
Elias held his breath, this was something worse than he imagined. before he could ask anything else the door opened, Aster Ludacris entered, Elias’s entire posture changed, the Chairman’s presence was unmistakable, Kai could see Elias mildly fidgeting on the seat. The old master was now standing akimbo with his hands folded behind him.
Aster glanced at Kai and then at Elias and the Old master before sighing deeply.
"I see you’ve reunited."
Elias said nothing, Aster walked closer.
"I came here to kill you."
Kai stiffened, Elias remained completely calm.
"This wasn’t our agreement Sir" Kai said immediately panicking because nothing would stop him from slaughtering them all. There was literally no counter attack. The chairman’s decisions were absolute but he instinctively calmed down wgrn he remembered that this man was on his husband candidate. He couldn’t kill him...
System?
[Warning! Host’s insinuation is incorrect and Null. The fifth husband candidate’s affinity Level is not nearly high enough for that notion to be remotely true]
What?
Aster glanced at Kai.
Silence settled over the room, then Aster said,
"I however, have changed my mind."
Elias frowned.
"About?"
"Your execution."
Kai looked between them, beaming in hope, Aster continued.
"I’m willing to give you another chance."
Elias almost laughed, despite his condition because he knew that he had committed an unforgivable offence. He glanced at the old master. He really was right about the verdict.
"You’re joking."
"I don’t joke about matters like this."
"What do you want?"
"Your return."
The amusement disappeared from Elias’s face.
"You want me back in the Dome."
"Yes."
"After ten years?"
"Yes."
"After what I did?"
Aster’s eyes hardened.
"You do remember what you did"
"I remember everything like it was yesterday so that’s why i am shocked at your verdict."
"Then you understand why your death was justified."
Elias sighed.
"I never argued otherwise."
Aster studied him.
"You were one of the finest assassins this organization produced."
"Past tense."
"Not necessarily."
Elias remained silent.
"Return to the Dome," Aster said. "Work under me again."
"And you’ll forget the past?"
"No."
Aster’s answer was immediate.
"I would never forget it"
His voice became colder.
"But I am willing to let you live with it."
Elias studied him.
"I am not exactly sure Kai would accept staying in the Dome much less traveling alone"
They both looked at Kai who stared back in confusion at why they were looking at him.
Sort it out between yourselves the fuck?
Aster glanced at the old master "leave us"
The old master bowed and in a bleep instantly dissapeard, a movement too fast for kai to even catch. His breath hitched. Was that still martial arts.
"Let me make you an extra generous offer" Aster said after the dissapearance and Kai swallowed as Elias himself tensed up.
"What exactly are you offering?"
"Independence."
That caught his attention and reaction. Was the chairman really offering all these?
"You’ll operate as you wish. Take contracts you choose. Travel wherever you want."
Aster continued.
"You’ll regain access to our information network."
Elias’s eyes narrowed. This was too good to be true.
"Does that include the safehouses?" He bit.
Aster nodded.
"Weapons?."
A pause and then a nod.
"And the Dome’s intelligence too for extra measure"
That one mattered, the world was enormous, they had already encountered things Elias couldn’t easily explain, Voltra had proven that, Ravenport was proving it again, information was power, and the Dome possessed more information than almost anyone else in the underground world.
Aster wasn’t finished.
"You can also continue traveling with Kai."
Kai looked at him, Elias’s expression was unreadable.
"You aren’t asking me to abandon him and have him over to you?"
"No."
Aster glanced toward Kai.
"Quite the opposite."
Elias understood immediately, the offer wasn’t simply forgiveness, it was an opportunity for the fucking chairman to keep an eye on Kai through using Elias as a leverage.
Kai suddenly spoke.
"You don’t have to return here just because they have resources, you can always not accept."
Elias looked at him.
"I literally don’t have a lick of choice in this matter, can you hear yourself?".
Kai frowned, he didn’t mean to come off as stupid, he was just trying to be supportive even though he knew he was the actual reason why He was getting a second chance..yes, he manoeuvred a way out for Kai during the dinner with the chairman.
"I am sorry" he said in a snarky tone.
Kai groaned in frustration,he had spent ten years avoiding this place, he had sworn he’d never return, but now he was sitting inside the very organization he’d once escaped from, and instead of feeling only hatred he was thinking about what it could offer, information, weapons, connections, safehouses, resources, things that could keep Kai and himself alive.
"I shouldn’t have taken this job" he muttered.
Aster watched the whole emotional exchange.
"You really don’t need to answer now."
Elias looked at him.
"How long?"
"Until tomorrow."
Aster turned toward the door then stopped.
"Neither of you will leave the Dome before then."
"Why?" Kai lamented.
"Because you are both prisoners or have you forgotten your place?" He said in a chilly tone that terrified the both of them.
He turned and left, the door closed, silence returned, Kai looked at Elias.
"So."
"So."
"You’re actually considering it."
Elias looked down at his restraints then toward the door then back at Kai.
"I don’t have a choice"
Kai sighed.
"I don’t like this place."
"I know."
"I don’t like the Chairman."
"Tell me about it"
"Crazy how your past came back to bite you"
"It’s a struggle"
"Do you really want to do this? We could find another way"
Elias looked at him, for a moment the question seemed bigger than the Dome, bigger than Aster, bigger than the past, he thought about the boy he’d been ten years ago, then the man he’d become, then Kai, the answer came easily.
"For you?"
Kai’s expression immediately became suspicious.
"Don’t make it romantic."
Elias laughed softly.
"I’m not."
"You are."
Kai looked away, his white hair falling slightly over his face, Elias smiled, that hair really did suit him, it reminded him of where everything had started, but looking at Kai now Elias realized something, he wasn’t the same man who had met that beautiful stranger three months ago, and Kai wasn’t simply the same beautiful stranger with white hair anymore, he was the person Elias had chosen, the person he’d risked everything for, and perhaps for the first time in ten years Elias wasn’t running from his past, perhaps he could walk back into it on his own terms, as long as Kai was beside him.
"I’d go anywhere," Elias finally said.
