The Adventuring Duo were due for a change of environment, after everything that happened in Ravenport Kai was set on not ever returning if they made it out of the city, and as if they had wished on a shooting star an opportunity presented itself, a mission of "great improvement" was what Aster described it as.

"I know you have been feigning to leave the city, so here’s your opportunity," he said as he passed them a briefing booklet.

Kai sighed muttering "finally" under his breath.

"Everything you need to know about the mission is in there, and your location is the Green City of Veyrhold," he said, and Elias and Kai exchanged glances, there was no long talk needed, they would take it.

"How far?" Kai asked.

"Four days by carriage if you travel normally."

Elias said.

Aster continued as though neither of them had spoken.

"Your insignia" he said to Elias as he fished out a silver badge that had the sculpt of two crossed daggers.

Elias’s expression changed as he took the badge from Aster. He had taken the offer afterall, there was no other choice.

"What exactly is the mission?"

Aster gestured toward the booklet.

"Read it." he said with a final tone

Kai sighed, and opened it, the first page contained a map, the second contained several names, the third contained a list of missing adventurers, Kai’s expression gradually became more serious.

"There are a lot of them."

"Twenty-three confirmed disappearances."

"Over how long?"

"Two months."

Elias took the booklet from him.

"Any bodies?"

"Three."

"Cause of death?"

"Varied."

Elias continued reading, Kai watched his expression change.

"You know something?" He asked Aster.

"Not yet."

Aster folded his arms.

"The local authorities believe these are unrelated cases."

"And you don’t."

"it doesn’t matter what i think, i am not your client and this is a directly requested job"

He said, Kai sighed in exhaustion drooping his shoulders but when he remembered that The man sitting before him could kill him and face NO consequences he stood upright and coughed.

Aster, however watched the whole charade in amusement.

Elias was busy flipping through the pages religiously, oblivious.

"it says here that twelve of the missing adventurers received the same offer before disappearing."

Kai looked at the page again, there was a name written at the bottom, Red Ledger.

"What is that?"

"A large adventurer syndicate."

Aster said with a serious tone.

Kai frowned.

Oh no, not another murderous group.

"Syndicate?" he asked out loud

Aster nodded.

"Think of them as an adventurer organization that doesn’t officially exist."

Kai continued reading.

"They recruit adventurers?"

"Among other things."

"Then what’s wrong with them?"

Aster’s expression hardened.

"Nothing."

Kai looked up.

"Nothing?"

"At least not on the surface."

That answer immediately made him suspicious, Aster continued.

"They accept commissions. They hunt monsters. They protect merchants. They escort caravans. They do everything ordinary adventurers do."

"So why are we investigating them?"

"Because adventurers who refuse to work with them have a habit of disappearing."

Kai closed the booklet not fully understanding the scope of the mission, he only had one question, why not the group accept a no.

"That’s a problem." Elias said

"Exactly."

Elias handed the booklet back.

"What’s the objective?"

"Find out what happened to the missing adventurers."

"That’s all?"

"That’s all."

Kai glanced at Aster.

"Alive?"

"If possible."

Elias gave a small smile.

"And if not?"

Aster’s expression didn’t change.

"you know what to do"

Kai watched the scene in confusion wondering what the hell they were talking about, he was nosy

"When do we leave?" he asked snappingly.

"Today."

Aster replied almost immediately.

Kai stared.

"Today?"

"You wanted to leave Ravenport."

"I did."

"Then leave."

Kai looked at Elias, Elias was already smiling.

"Looks like we’re going."

Kai sighed.

"Fine."

By midday they were on the road, Veyrhold was their destination, Kai had never heard the name before , according to the booklet it was one of the largest adventurer cities in the region, the city was famous for its enormous green forests, sprawling fields and the abundance of monster territories surrounding it, that was where it had earned its title, the Green City.

Unlike Ravenport which had felt like a place built around secrets Veyrhold was apparently alive with adventurers, guilds, merchants, l, monster hunters, travelers, people from different works of life, and most importantly commissions, Kai was beginning to feel excited, a new city meant new opportunities, new missions meant more experience, and after everything that had happened in Voltra and Ravenport perhaps this was exactly what they needed, a fresh start.

Elias sat opposite him inside a hired carriage reading through the mission booklet again, Kai stared at him.

"You’re going to memorize that thing?"

"I’m making sure we don’t miss anything."

"i have read it only four times."

"Five."

Kai sighed.

"You’re impossible."

Elias looked up.

"You complain too much."

"I haven’t complained once today."

"You complained about the carriage before we got in."

"Because it literally smells that i am still alive is a miracle."

Elias sniffed the air around them and gagged a bit "it really does."

Kai shrugged "you see?"

"You complained about the road too."

"It’s literally terrible." kai said rolling his eyes.

"You complained about the food too."

"It was literally terrible."

Elias smirked "you are right"

Kai stared.

"why are you even agreeing with me?"

"Because you’re right."

Kai leaned back.

"You’re so fucking annoying."

Elias smiled.

"You like me."

"Unfortunately."

Elias’s smile widened, Kai looked out the window, the landscape had already begun changing, Ravenport’s dense urban surroundings were gradually disappearing, the roads became wider, trees began appearing in greater numbers, then more, and more, until eventually as the days passed the horizon became a sea of green, Kai pressed his face closer to the window.

"Whoa."

Elias looked over.

"What?"

Kai pointed outside.

"That."

Far in the distance enormous trees rose above the landscape, their canopies were so vast that they almost looked like mountains, beyond them the faint silhouette of a city could be seen, green banners flew from its towers, Kai’s eyes widened.

"That’s Veyrhold?"

Elias looked at the map.

"Looks like it."

Kai smiled, for the first time in a long while he felt genuinely excited about what came next, no mansion, no underground auction, no horrifying entity, just adventure, at least that was what he hoped, the carriage continued toward the city.

Veyrhold was enormous, Kai’s first thought after entering the city was that the word green didn’t even begin to describe it, trees grew between buildings, gardens occupied entire streets, vines climbed the sides of stone towers, even the Guild building had massive trees growing around its walls, adventurers crowded the streets, some carried swords, others carried staffs, bows or strange magical weapons, there were beastfolk, elves, dwarves, humans and several races Kai couldn’t still immediately identify without extreme help from the system, the city was loud, alive, chaotic, Kai smiled.

"I like it here."

Elias glanced at him.

"You’ve been here for five minutes."

"That’s enough, first impressions matters".

They stopped in front of the Adventurer’s Guild, the building was enormous, several floors, multiple entrances, a massive board outside displaying commissions, Kai’s eyes immediately lit up.

"There are so many."

Elias grabbed the back of his coat before he could run toward it.

"Mission first."

Kai looked back.

"But—"

"No."

"We’re A-rank."

"I know."

"We can take better missions."

"I know."

"There’s an S-rank commission."

Elias’s grip tightened.

"We’re investigating missing adventurers."

Kai sighed.

"Fine."

They entered the Guild, the noise hit them immediately, laughter, arguments, clashing weapons, people shouting over commissions, a receptionist called for the next adventurer, someone complained about a failed monster hunt, another group celebrated a successful commission, Kai couldn’t help smiling, it was thrilling to feel the famaliar atmosphere was accustomed to even though he almost never went to the guilds

"Registration?"

"Investigation."

She raised an eyebrow, Kai placed his A-rank plaque on the counter, the woman’s eyes widened.

"A-rank?"

Kai nodded.

"Honorary."

She examined the plaque.

"you are connected to that incident at voltra?"

"Yes."

Her expression changed immediately.

"Oh."

She looked at Elias.

"And you?"

Elias placed his own adventurer credentials on the counter, the receptionist examined them, unlike Kai’s plaque Elias’s contained no unusual designation, just a normal adventurer registration.

"Both of you are taking the missing adventurer investigation?"

"Yes."

She pulled out a file, Kai took it.

"What’s this?"

"Everything the Guild has collected so far."

He opened it, there were names, locations, dates, and a symbol, the same red symbol from Aster’s briefing, Kai looked at Elias.

"Red Ledger."

Elias nodded, the receptionist lowered her voice.

"Be careful."

Kai looked back at her.

"Why?"

She glanced around.

"These people are the quickest killers you would ever meet don’t let them catch onto you" she said to them and they both turned to each other and nodded already connecting dots.
