Gathering Husbands with a System in a Game Like World [BL]
Chapter 83: Leaving VerylholdKai stood a short distance away from the others, one hand pressed to his temple as he spoke quietly under his breath.
"System. Options. Anything. How do we get out from under this guy?"
[Analyzing...]
[Direct confrontation with Jake Evans currently carries extreme risk. Temporary power rejection cannot be reliably countered with available resources.]
[Primary recommendation: Relocate to a high-security or politically insulated territory. Priority: locations with strong independent authority structures and limited Red Ledger influence.]
[Secondary recommendation: Avoid prolonged exposure in open cities until Host’s countermeasures improve.]
Safe haven. That was the only answer that kept coming back.
Behind him, Elias was still pacing like a caged animal.
"I’m telling you, it doesn’t make sense. He shut down the light. Fine. Whatever. But even my body felt wrong. Like the timing was half a second off. Who the hell does that? Who looks at someone and just decides their power doesn’t get to exist anymore?"
"I swear that man should turn his powers off and fight me hand to hand like a real man would! Let’s see who is left standing piece of shit!" He kicked a Pebble with so much valor that it flew into the sky with flames.
Ayan sat on a low piece of broken stone, arms wrapped around himself. His face was pale and his eyes kept darting toward every shadow.
"You never see them coming," he muttered. "That’s the point. Once they decide you’re a liability, you don’t get a warning. You just... stop being a problem."
"But i don’t want to die"
Kai glanced over. The younger man looked one loud noise away from bolting.
Lucien, by contrast, stood at the edge of the small clearing they had taken cover in, eyes fixed on the sky like he was waiting for something specific.
Kai walked over.
"Hey."
"Hey."
"So... what are you looking for?"
"Someone."
"Like...?"
"I called in a favour. The safest travel for us right now is by air. We need transport to evacuate this city."
Kai felt a small knot of tension ease. At least one of them was thinking clearly.
"So I assume the favour is a someone?"
"Correct. A friend."
Lucien’s gaze sharpened.
"Oh. There he is."
Kai looked up.
The familiar outline of a massive winged shape cut across the afternoon sky, growing larger by the second. Silver-black feathers. Broad wings. The unmistakable presence of a Thunder Griffin.
"Is that..."
[Confirmed. The approaching creature is Argent, bonded partner of Candidate 003: Rhydian.]
[Candidate 003 is also present and within close proximity.]
Argent descended in a controlled spiral and landed hard enough to send a low tremor through the ground. Dust and leaves kicked up around the clearing. Rhydian slid down from the griffin’s back in one smooth motion, cloak settling around him as he straightened.
Elias and Ayan both stopped mid-argument and stared.
Rhydian’s eyes found Kai first. A small, genuine smile pulled at his mouth as he walked over and offered a hand. The handshake was a little awkward, a little too firm, but warm.
"Hey, Kai."
"Hey... Rhydian. It’s been a while."
Kai meant it. Seeing a familiar face that wasn’t currently bleeding or furious felt strangely grounding.
He glanced between Rhydian and Lucien.
"How long have you two been friends? Because last time I remember..."
Both men gave the same slightly awkward laugh.
"Yeah," Rhydian said. "Let’s just say we had a common interest in not beefing." He winked at Kai.
The System, of course, could not stay quiet.
[The common interest in this situation could be you.]
Shut it.
Rhydian looked past Kai and finally noticed the other two.
"Hey. I know you." He pointed at Elias.
Elias chuckled, some of the earlier frustration bleeding off.
"You were actually fire as fuck in Voltra."
"I could say the same about you."
Then Rhydian’s gaze landed on Ayan. The younger man immediately looked like he wanted the ground to swallow him.
"And who is this?"
Kai stepped in before Elias or Lucien could answer. He reached out and rested a hand on Ayan’s shoulder, the touch steady and deliberate enough to send a clear message.
"This is Ayan. A friend."
Ayan’s ears went faintly pink, but he didn’t pull away.
Kai then turned toward Argent. The griffin let out a pleased, low screech and nudged him with the side of its massive head hard enough to make him step back. Kai huffed a quiet laugh and rested a hand against the warm feathers.
"Missed you too, big guy."
The mood shifted as soon as the greetings were done. Lucien gave Rhydian a concise, no-nonsense briefing on Jake Evans, the Rejection ability, the warehouse, and the open threat hanging over them. Rhydian’s expression grew grimmer with every sentence.
When Lucien finished, Rhydian exhaled and nodded once.
"Alright. I’ll get you out of the city. That’s why I came when you called."
Lucien looked at the group.
"We’re going to my hometown. Eldoria. They won’t find us easily there."
The System supplied the details before Kai could ask.
[Eldoria: Primary elven city-state. In the original game data, Eldoria was a ground-based settlement located deep within the Verdant Expanse. Current world state shows significant deviation. Eldoria now exists as a floating city built upon a suspended mountain mass, maintained by ancient elven formations and continuous high-density mana. Access is restricted and heavily monitored. Political structure is independent from human Guild authority.]
[Note: Multiple geographic and structural changes across the world map have been logged since Host’s transmigration. Causal link to Host’s presence is probable but not fully quantified.]
Kai absorbed that in silence. A floating elven city that used to be on the ground. Another piece of the world rewritten because he existed in it. For a moment the old, bitter thought surfaced again — whoever dropped him into this game had a vicious sense of humor.
"We move," Lucien said. "There’s no time to waste."
They wouldn’t be going back to the hotel. Clothes, accessories, the A-rank badge, everything left behind in the suite would stay there. Kai felt a brief spike of irritation at the loss until the System spoke again.
[Host possesses the Ring of Infinite Storage. Registered belongings can be summoned at will. Physical return to previous lodging is unnecessary.]
Right. That solved one problem, at least.
Rhydian and Lucien mounted Argent first. Then the awkwardness hit.
Three hands extended toward Kai at almost the same time.
Rhydian reached down from the griffin’s back.
Lucien offered his hand from the other side.
Elias, never one to be left out, dropped into a crouch and patted his own shoulder like a step stool.
"Come on, Sugar. Up you go."
Even Ayan, still pale and uncertain, lifted his uninjured hand a little and muttered,
"You need help?"
Kai stared at all of them.
The sheer synchronized concern was so absurd that a short, helpless chuckle escaped before he could stop it. He sighed, shook his head, and simply bent his knees.
"Seriously, guys?"
He jumped, caught the edge of the saddle harness, and pulled himself up onto Argent’s back under his own power. The griffin shifted slightly to accommodate him.
The others straightened with varying degrees of awkwardness. Elias recovered fastest. Instead of climbing up, he stepped back, smirked, and rose into the air on a controlled burst of residual light.
"I’ll fly."
Kai looked down at him.
"Can you even fly properly right now?"
Elias’s grin widened. He shot upward in a clean arc, circled once overhead, and settled into a hovering position just above Argent like it was the easiest thing in the world.
"What are we waiting for? Come on."
Everyone else rolled their eyes.
Kai looked down at Ayan, who still stood on the ground looking torn, and stretched out a hand.
"You coming?"
Ayan hesitated, fingers curling into the fabric of his shirt.
"I don’t know. I really don’t want to be an inconvenience."
Kai sighed.
"You’d be an inconvenience if you stayed here and made me worry my ass off. Get up here."
Rhydian leaned over from the front.
"Come on, bro, stop being a chicken. He’s offering you a hand. Take it."
Ayan looked at the offered hand for another second. Then, with a small, reluctant smile, he took it. Kai pulled him up. Ayan settled behind him, careful of his injured arm, posture still a little tense but no longer ready to bolt.
Rhydian checked that everyone was secure, then glanced back once.
"Hold on. Argent doesn’t do gentle takeoffs when we’re in a hurry."
The Thunder Griffin gathered itself, powerful muscles coiling, and launched into the sky with a surge of wind and beating wings. Elias kept pace above them, a streak of controlled light against the afternoon sky.
Veyrhold shrank beneath them. The green canopies, the Guild towers, the warehouse district, and the invisible weight of the Auditor’s attention all fell away as Argent carried them toward the distant horizon and the floating city of Eldoria.
