Genesis & Oblivion: The Celestial Evolution System
Chapter 85 — The First TrialChapter 85: Chapter 85 — The First Trial
The moment Azrael closed his eyes, the fortress disappeared.
There was no stone chamber.
No floating crystals.
No sound from the people waiting outside.
No sensation of the floor beneath him.
Everything vanished.
Azrael opened his eyes.
He was standing in an endless white space.
There was no horizon.
No sky.
No ground that he could properly see.
Yet somehow, he was standing.
Azrael instinctively reached for Astraeus.
The sword was still in his hand.
But something immediately felt wrong.
He couldn’t sense his mana.
He couldn’t feel his Eclipse Wings.
Even his connection to the Celestial Evolution System felt distant, as though something had placed an enormous barrier between them.
Azrael frowned.
"So this is the trial."
A voice answered from somewhere within the white space.
"Understanding cannot be measured by power."
Azrael looked around.
"Then what am I supposed to do?"
There was no answer.
The voice disappeared.
Azrael waited.
Nothing happened.
He took a step forward.
The moment his foot touched the ground—
BOOM!
The entire environment changed.
The endless white space disappeared.
Azrael found himself standing in the middle of a dense forest.
Tall trees surrounded him in every direction.
Their branches blocked most of the sky.
Birds flew between them.
Small creatures moved through the grass.
A clear stream flowed peacefully nearby.
The scene looked completely ordinary.
Too ordinary.
Azrael immediately activated Origin Perception.
His perception spread through the forest.
Nothing.
No powerful aura.
No hidden enemy.
No abnormal energy.
No formation.
He slowly approached the stream.
The water was clear enough to see the stones beneath it.
Azrael crouched down.
His reflection appeared on the surface.
Silver-white hair.
Violet eyes.
Astraeus in his hand.
Everything looked normal.
Then—
His reflection moved.
Azrael froze.
The reflection raised Astraeus.
Azrael hadn’t moved.
His eyes narrowed.
The reflection swung the sword.
Azrael immediately jumped backward.
BOOM!
The ground where he had been standing exploded.
Water erupted from the stream.
A figure emerged from beneath the surface.
Azrael stared.
It looked exactly like him.
Same face.
Same body.
Same silver-white hair.
Same violet eyes.
The same Eclipse Wings unfolded behind its back.
Even Astraeus was in its hand.
The only difference...
Its eyes were completely emotionless.
Azrael tightened his grip.
"A copy."
The figure attacked.
CLANG!
Astraeus collided with Astraeus.
The impact sent a shockwave through the forest.
Azrael was forced backward.
His eyes sharpened.
The copy possessed exactly the same strength.
The same speed.
The same swordsmanship.
Even the same instincts.
Azrael attacked.
The copy countered.
He swung from the right.
It blocked.
He changed direction.
It adapted.
He stepped forward.
It stepped forward.
Their swords collided repeatedly.
CLANG!
CLANG!
CLANG!
Leaves were thrown into the air by the shockwaves.
Branches snapped.
The stream was disturbed by their movements.
Yet neither gained an advantage.
Azrael suddenly jumped backward.
The copy did the same.
He moved left.
The copy mirrored him.
He moved right.
The copy followed.
Azrael raised Astraeus.
The copy raised its sword.
Azrael lowered his weapon.
The copy lowered its weapon.
Azrael’s expression changed.
"So that’s it."
The copy remained silent.
"You’re not trying to defeat me."
Nothing.
"You’re copying me."
Still nothing.
Azrael slowly smiled.
"Then let’s see how far that goes."
He dropped Astraeus.
The copy dropped its sword.
Azrael sat down.
The copy sat down.
Azrael closed his eyes.
The copy closed its eyes.
Several minutes passed.
Nothing happened.
The forest remained silent.
Azrael opened one eye.
The copy was still sitting there.
He smiled.
Interesting.
He stood.
The copy stood.
He walked toward it.
The copy walked toward him.
They stopped less than a meter apart.
Azrael reached out.
His finger touched the copy’s chest.
Nothing happened.
Then he realized something.
The copy wasn’t simply copying his movements.
It was copying his understanding.
Azrael slowly pulled his hand back.
"The chamber isn’t testing whether I can defeat myself."
"It’s testing whether I understand myself."
He closed his eyes again.
The copy disappeared.
The forest disappeared.
The white space returned.
A System notification appeared.
[First Trial Complete]
Trial Type: Self-Reflection
Result: Passed
Understanding Increased
Combat Insight +1
Origin Perception +1
Azrael opened his eyes.
"So that’s the first lesson."
The voice returned.
"A warrior who does not understand himself cannot understand his opponent."
Azrael nodded.
"I understand."
The white world changed again.
This time, he found himself standing inside a massive battlefield.
Thousands of soldiers were fighting across a vast plain.
Magic exploded across the sky.
Weapons collided.
Monsters charged through the battlefield.
Fire consumed entire sections of the battlefield while powerful spells shattered the ground.
Azrael immediately recognized the situation.
It was chaos.
A soldier rushed toward him.
"Help us!"
Another shouted from the distance.
"Protect the eastern line!"
A third screamed.
"The western wall is collapsing!"
Azrael looked around.
There were too many problems.
He couldn’t help everyone.
The battlefield suddenly shifted.
A giant beast appeared in front of him.
At the same time, the eastern line began collapsing.
Then the western wall exploded.
Three problems.
Three disasters.
Azrael frowned.
The chamber wasn’t testing his strength.
It was testing his judgment.
He carefully observed the battlefield.
The giant beast was enormous.
But it wasn’t attacking the soldiers.
Instead, it was protecting something.
The eastern line was already collapsing.
But there were fewer soldiers there.
The western wall had the largest number of enemies.
If he went there, he could potentially save more people.
Azrael hesitated.
Then he made his decision.
He ran toward the eastern line.
The moment he arrived, the battlefield changed again.
The eastern soldiers survived.
But the western wall collapsed.
Thousands of soldiers were overwhelmed.
Azrael clenched his fists.
The voice returned.
"Why did you choose them?"
Azrael looked toward the battlefield.
"Because they were closest to complete defeat."
"You could have saved more people at the western wall."
"I couldn’t save everyone."
"Then why not save the greater number?"
Azrael remained silent for several seconds.
Then he answered.
"Because numbers aren’t everything."
The battlefield continued around him.
Soldiers screamed.
Weapons clashed.
Fire burned across the sky.
Azrael continued.
"If I abandon the people who are already losing..."
"...then my strength means nothing."
The voice became silent.
Azrael looked at the soldiers he had saved.
"They weren’t asking me to save everyone."
"They were asking me to help."
The battlefield disappeared.
Another System notification appeared.
[Second Trial Complete]
Trial Type: Judgment
Result: Passed
Decision-Making Increased
Combat Insight +1
Mental Resistance +1
Azrael took a deep breath.
Two trials.
Both completely different.
The chamber wasn’t teaching him a technique.
It was forcing him to understand how he thought.
More importantly...
It was forcing him to recognize the limits of his own strength.
For the first time, Azrael understood something that seemed obvious but was surprisingly difficult to accept.
Having enough power to change a situation didn’t mean he could control everything.
Sometimes, the best decision wasn’t the one that produced the largest result.
It was the one that remained true to what he believed.
The white space trembled.
Azrael looked up.
The next trial had already begun.
This time...
There was no battlefield.
No opponent.
No monster.
No weapon.
Only a single door.
The door stood alone in the endless white space.
It was enormous.
Its surface was completely smooth.
No handle.
No lock.
No hinges.
Nothing.
Azrael walked toward it.
A System message appeared.
[Third Trial]
Objective:
Open the door.
Restrictions:
No strength may be used.
No technique may be used.
No System assistance is permitted.
Additional Restriction:
The door cannot be destroyed.
Hint:
Find another way.
Azrael stared at the message.
Then he looked at the door.
He reached out and pushed.
Nothing happened.
He pushed harder.
Still nothing.
Azrael frowned.
He stepped back and examined it.
No handle.
No mechanism.
No visible opening.
He walked around it.
The door extended infinitely upward.
There was no way around it.
He crouched and examined the bottom.
Nothing.
He looked behind himself.
Nothing.
Azrael sighed.
"So I’m supposed to open a door that doesn’t have a handle."
He sat down.
For several minutes, he simply stared at it.
The old master’s lessons suddenly came back to him.
A weapon is only an extension of understanding.
Every technique has an opening.
Every opponent asks a different question.
Azrael looked at the door again.
"What question are you asking?"
Nothing happened.
He stood.
Instead of pushing the door again, he placed his palm against it.
Cold.
Completely ordinary.
Yet something felt strange.
Azrael closed his eyes.
He listened.
At first, there was nothing.
Then...
A faint vibration.
Very faint.
Almost impossible to notice.
Azrael’s eyes opened.
"Resonance."
He remembered the stone.
The sound of Astraeus.
The ripples in the lake.
Everything had a rhythm.
Even things that appeared completely still.
Azrael placed his other hand against the door.
He didn’t force energy into it.
He didn’t use mana.
He didn’t activate Origin Perception.
He simply listened.
The vibration became clearer.
The door wasn’t locked.
It was waiting.
Azrael adjusted his breathing.
His heartbeat slowly became steady.
The vibration changed.
Once.
Twice.
Then—
Click.
Azrael’s eyes widened.
A small line appeared across the door.
The enormous structure slowly opened.
White light flooded the entire space.
[Third Trial Complete]
Trial Type: Resonance
Result: Passed
Understanding Increased
Stone Resonance has evolved.
[Stone Resonance]
Current Rank: Beginner
↓
Resonance Understanding
Current Rank: Basic
New Effect:
Allows the user to perceive and interact with the natural resonance of objects, techniques, and environments.
Azrael stared at the notification.
"So that’s what the stone was teaching me."
The old master’s voice seemed to echo inside his mind.
"The stone was never the lesson."
Azrael smiled.
He finally understood.
The pebble had only been the beginning.
The actual lesson was learning to listen.
The chamber changed once more.
But this time...
Azrael didn’t immediately move.
He waited.
He knew there would be another trial.
And judging by the first three...
The next one would probably attack a completely different weakness.
Outside the chamber, several hours had passed.
Seraphina remained near the entrance.
Caelan sat nearby, quietly meditating.
Orin had fallen asleep against his shield.
Lyanna was reading the information recorded on the fortress walls.
Suddenly, one of the crystals floating above the chamber turned completely silver.
Caelan opened his eyes.
"Another trial completed."
Seraphina smiled.
"How many?"
"Three."
She looked toward the chamber.
"Already?"
Caelan nodded.
"His comprehension speed is unusual."
Seraphina smiled proudly.
"That’s my brother."
Inside the chamber, Azrael stood before another scene.
This time, he wasn’t alone.
A familiar figure stood across from him.
Silver-white hair.
Violet eyes.
Golden wings.
Seraphina.
Azrael’s expression immediately became serious.
The illusionary Seraphina raised her staff.
"Azrael."
He didn’t answer.
She smiled.
"Let’s fight."
Azrael slowly raised Astraeus.
He understood immediately.
This trial wouldn’t be about defeating an opponent.
It would be about whether he could fight someone he refused to hurt.
He took a deep breath.
Then stepped forward.
The fourth trial began.
