Chapter 86: Chapter 86 — The Fourth Trial

Azrael stood silently.

Across from him was Seraphina.

She looked exactly as he remembered.

The same golden hair.

The same gentle expression.

The same golden wings.

Even the staff in her hand was identical to the one she carried outside the chamber.

Yet Azrael knew immediately.

This wasn’t his sister.

It was an illusion.

A test.

Seraphina raised her staff.

"Azrael."

Her voice sounded exactly the same.

He tightened his grip around Astraeus.

"What am I supposed to do?"

The illusion smiled.

"Defeat me."

Azrael didn’t move.

"You know I won’t hurt you."

"Then you will fail."

The words were simple.

But Azrael understood the meaning.

The chamber wasn’t asking whether he could defeat Seraphina.

It was asking whether he could overcome his unwillingness to fight someone important to him.

Azrael slowly raised Astraeus.

"Fine."

The illusion disappeared.

BOOM!

A golden spear of light appeared where his head had been.

Azrael tilted his body.

The attack passed beside him.

The ground exploded.

He immediately moved forward.

The illusionary Seraphina swung her staff.

Golden vines erupted from the ground.

Azrael jumped.

The vines followed him.

He spread his Eclipse Wings.

One wingbeat pushed him sideways.

A golden blade of energy flew past his shoulder.

Azrael landed.

His expression became serious.

"She’s stronger than the real Seraphina was when we first entered the Academy."

The illusion attacked again.

Azrael blocked.

CLANG!

Golden energy collided with black steel.

The impact forced him backward.

Seraphina’s illusion didn’t give him time to recover.

Another attack.

Then another.

Then another.

Azrael dodged each one.

He could defeat her.

He knew that.

But the problem wasn’t winning.

It was finding a way to win without allowing his emotions to control his actions.

The illusion suddenly changed.

Seraphina’s expression became frightened.

"Azrael..."

He stopped.

The illusion lowered her weapon.

"I’m scared."

Azrael’s eyes narrowed.

"You aren’t her."

The illusion smiled.

"You know that?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you stop?"

Azrael didn’t answer immediately.

Because for that brief moment...

He had reacted exactly as the real Seraphina would have made him react.

The illusion attacked.

Azrael barely blocked.

BOOM!

He was thrown backward.

He rolled across the ground and immediately stood.

Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth.

The illusion looked at him.

"You hesitated."

Azrael wiped the blood away.

"I did."

"Why?"

"Because you’re using her image."

"That is the point."

Azrael looked at her carefully.

Then he smiled.

"No."

The illusion frowned.

"The point isn’t whether I can hurt you."

He lowered Astraeus.

"The point is whether I can separate you from her."

The illusion remained silent.

Azrael closed his eyes.

He stopped looking at her appearance.

Stopped listening to her voice.

Stopped thinking about his sister.

Instead...

He focused on her movements.

Her breathing.

Her stance.

The rhythm of her energy.

The resonance of the illusion itself.

There.

A small inconsistency.

The real Seraphina’s Genesis energy felt warm.

This illusion was similar...

But not identical.

Azrael opened his eyes.

"I found you."

He vanished.

BOOM!

The illusion attacked.

Azrael stepped through the golden energy.

Astraeus struck the staff.

CLANG!

The weapon flew from her hand.

The illusion immediately attempted another spell.

Azrael moved closer.

His sword stopped against her chest.

He didn’t strike.

Instead, he spoke calmly.

"You’re not my sister."

The illusion stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because my sister trusts me."

The illusion’s expression changed.

Azrael continued.

"She wouldn’t try to manipulate me into lowering my guard."

The illusion began cracking.

Golden lines appeared across its body.

Azrael lowered Astraeus.

"I won’t let my love for her become a weakness."

The illusion shattered.

Thousands of fragments of golden light floated through the white space before disappearing.

A System notification appeared.

[Fourth Trial Complete]

Trial Type: Emotional Control

Result: Passed

Mental Resistance +1

Combat Insight +1

Emotional Control Increased

New Understanding Acquired:

Protecting someone does not mean becoming controlled by your attachment to them.

Azrael stared at the notification.

He remained silent for a moment.

Then he nodded.

"I understand."

The white space changed again.

This time, there was no enemy.

No door.

No battlefield.

Instead, Azrael found himself standing on a vast plain.

Thousands of weapons were scattered across the ground.

Swords.

Spears.

Axes.

Bows.

Staffs.

Daggers.

Even weapons he had never seen before.

At the center stood Astraeus.

The sword was embedded in the ground.

Azrael walked toward it.

A message appeared.

[Fifth Trial]

Choose your weapon.

Only one may be selected.

Your choice cannot be changed.

Azrael looked at the countless weapons.

Then at Astraeus.

He already knew what the chamber wanted.

The obvious answer was Astraeus.

His strongest weapon.

The weapon he had used throughout his journey.

But the old master’s lessons returned to his mind.

A weapon is only an extension of understanding.

Azrael didn’t immediately reach for Astraeus.

Instead, he walked through the field.

He picked up a spear.

Then a dagger.

Then a bow.

He examined each weapon.

Every one felt different.

Different weight.

Different balance.

Different resonance.

After several minutes, Azrael finally returned to Astraeus.

He placed his hand on its hilt.

The sword immediately resonated with him.

Not because it was the strongest weapon.

But because they had grown together.

Azrael pulled it from the ground.

The entire battlefield disappeared.

[Fifth Trial Complete]

Trial Type: Choice

Result: Passed

Weapon Understanding Increased

Astraeus Resonance Increased

Swordsmanship Insight Increased

Azrael looked at Astraeus.

For a moment, he could feel something different within the blade.

Its resonance had become clearer.

He could almost hear it.

Not words.

Not a voice.

A rhythm.

His rhythm.

The sword was no longer simply a weapon he carried.

It had become an extension of his understanding.

Azrael smiled.

"You’re learning too."

Astraeus gave a faint vibration in response.

Outside the chamber, another crystal changed color.

Seraphina looked up.

"Another one."

Caelan stood.

"Five."

Orin woke up immediately.

"Five?"

He rubbed his eyes.

"How long has he been inside?"

Lyanna checked the time.

"Almost three hours."

Orin stared at the chamber.

"He’s been doing those trials for three hours?"

Caelan nodded.

"Apparently."

Seraphina smiled.

"He’s probably enjoying himself."

Orin looked at her strangely.

"Enjoying himself?"

She nodded.

"When Azrael finds something challenging..."

"He usually becomes more interested."

Lyanna laughed softly.

"That sounds dangerous."

"It is."

Inside the chamber, Azrael stood in another environment.

This time...

He recognized it.

The Trial Tower.

The ruined city.

The countless participants.

The battlefield.

He was standing exactly where he had stood during the seventh floor.

But something was different.

A familiar figure appeared ahead.

The Judicator.

Azrael’s expression became serious.

The armored warrior slowly raised his sword.

No words.

No warning.

He attacked.

BOOM!

Azrael blocked.

The impact shook his arms.

The Judicator attacked again.

Azrael countered.

Their swords collided.

The battle continued.

But this time, Azrael noticed something he hadn’t noticed before.

The Judicator’s attacks weren’t random.

They followed a rhythm.

One he had experienced before.

One he had adapted to during their hundred exchanges.

Azrael smiled.

"So that’s what you’re teaching me."

He stopped trying to defeat the Judicator.

Instead, he watched.

Every attack.

Every movement.

Every shift in weight.

Every change in breathing.

His Origin Perception expanded.

The Judicator’s movements became clearer.

Azrael began predicting attacks before they happened.

The Judicator swung.

Azrael moved before the blade arrived.

A thrust.

Azrael stepped aside.

A vertical strike.

Azrael avoided it.

A spinning attack.

Azrael ducked.

The more he watched...

The more obvious the pattern became.

Eventually, Azrael didn’t even need to look at the weapon.

He could read the movement from the body.

Shoulders.

Hips.

Feet.

Breathing.

Intent.

Everything connected.

Azrael closed his eyes.

The Judicator attacked.

Azrael dodged.

Another attack.

He dodged again.

Then—

Astraeus struck.

BOOM!

The Judicator shattered into countless pieces of light.

[Sixth Trial Complete]

Trial Type: Combat Understanding

Result: Passed

Combat Insight +2

Origin Perception +1

Swordsmanship Insight +1

New Understanding Acquired:

Read the fighter, not the weapon.

Azrael slowly opened his eyes.

His expression was calm.

He had finally understood something the old master had been trying to teach him.

The sword didn’t reveal the attack.

The person did.

A weapon was only the final expression of a decision already made by the body.

Azrael looked at his hands.

His combat style had changed.

Not dramatically.

Not enough for anyone outside to immediately notice.

But the difference was there.

He was becoming less dependent on reaction.

More dependent on understanding.

The chamber began fading.

The six crystals above him glowed simultaneously.

Then a final notification appeared.

[Intermediate Trial Sequence Complete]

Trials Completed: 6

Overall Evaluation:

Excellent

Comprehension: High

Adaptability: Exceptional

Combat Understanding: Exceptional

Emotional Control: High

Resonance Understanding: Developing

Reward Available

Azrael looked at the final line.

"Reward?"

A seventh crystal slowly descended from the ceiling.

Unlike the others...

This one was completely black.

Azrael stared at it.

The crystal slowly opened.

A stream of information entered his mind.

For a few seconds, everything was silent.

Then—

His System appeared.

[New Skill Acquired]

Resonance Sight

Rank: Rare

Effect:

Allows the user to perceive the natural resonance of objects, techniques, energy, and living beings.

Current Proficiency: 1%

Azrael’s eyes widened slightly.

He immediately activated the skill.

The chamber changed.

Everything now carried a faint rhythm.

The floor.

The crystals.

The air.

His own body.

Even Astraeus.

Azrael stared at the sword.

Its resonance was incredibly clear.

Then he looked toward the chamber walls.

There was something else.

A hidden vibration.

Behind the wall.

Azrael frowned.

Someone had built something beyond the chamber.

He walked toward the wall and placed his hand against it.

The resonance became stronger.

A System notification appeared.

[Hidden Structure Detected]

Distance: 17 meters

Status: Sealed

Requirement: Resonance Understanding

Azrael smiled.

"So the Academy left something else behind."

He looked toward the sealed wall.

This time, however, he didn’t immediately try to open it.

He had learned his lesson.

Understanding came first.

Action came second.

Azrael sat down again.

He placed Astraeus beside him.

Then he began studying the strange resonance within the wall.

Outside the chamber, Seraphina noticed the black crystal suddenly dim.

"Something changed."

Caelan looked toward the entrance.

"Did he finish?"

Seraphina shook her head.

"No."

She smiled.

"He’s probably found something else."

Orin sighed.

"Of course he has."

Lyanna laughed.

"Let’s hope whatever he found doesn’t destroy the fortress."

Seraphina looked toward the chamber.

"He’ll be fine."

The group settled down again.

And inside the Ancient Comprehension Chamber, Azrael continued studying the hidden structure, carefully applying the lessons he had learned instead of rushing forward.
