Genesis & Oblivion: The Celestial Evolution System
Chapter 96 — The Price of ChoiceChapter 96: Chapter 96 — The Price of Choice
The staircase ended beneath a dark blue sky.
Azrael stepped onto the Sixteenth Floor and immediately stopped.
There was no battlefield.
No city.
No forest.
Instead, an enormous circular hall stretched before them.
Five paths extended from the center.
Each path led toward a different doorway.
Above the doors were five symbols.
A sword.
A flower.
A shield.
A shadow.
And a crown.
Orin looked at them.
"That’s new."
Lyanna walked toward the center.
"Five doors."
Caelan studied the symbols.
"One for each of us?"
Azrael shook his head.
"Maybe."
The System appeared.
[Floor Sixteen]
Trial Type: Choice
Objective:
Select one path.
Special Rule:
Once chosen, the path cannot be changed.
Reward:
Determined by the choice made.
Failure Condition:
Choosing a path for the wrong reason.
Seraphina frowned.
"Choosing for the wrong reason?"
Azrael looked at the five doors.
"So the Tower isn’t judging which choice is strongest."
Caelan nodded.
"It’s judging why we choose it."
The five doors remained completely still.
No explanation followed.
Orin walked toward the sword.
"This one looks useful."
Lyanna immediately laughed.
"That’s exactly the kind of answer the Tower probably considers wrong."
Orin scratched his head.
"Then what am I supposed to choose?"
Azrael looked at him.
"What do you want?"
Orin became quiet.
"I don’t know."
"Then think."
The group separated.
Each person stood before the five doors.
Azrael stopped before the crown.
He imagined himself sitting upon a throne.
People kneeling before him.
Kingdoms obeying his commands.
Armies moving at his word.
Power.
Authority.
Respect.
For a moment, the image was appealing.
Then he shook his head.
"I don’t want a throne."
The crown disappeared.
Azrael moved to the sword.
He imagined himself becoming the greatest swordsman in existence.
A blade capable of cutting through anything.
No opponent could defeat him.
No enemy could threaten the people he cared about.
But something still felt wrong.
He understood the sword.
He loved Astraeus.
Yet becoming stronger simply for the sake of being unbeatable wasn’t his goal.
The sword disappeared.
He moved to the shield.
A different image appeared.
Seraphina stood behind him.
His friends stood beside her.
Nothing could reach them.
No matter how powerful their enemies became, Azrael would stand between them and danger.
His expression softened.
This was closer.
But even this wasn’t everything.
The shield disappeared.
Only two doors remained.
The flower.
The shadow.
Azrael stared at the flower.
He immediately thought of Seraphina.
Creation.
Life.
Growth.
It represented everything opposite to him.
Then he looked toward the shadow.
Oblivion.
Silence.
Destruction.
The path he had already begun walking.
He stood there for a long time.
Finally, he understood.
The Tower wasn’t asking which power he preferred.
It was asking what he valued.
Azrael stepped away from all five doors.
The System appeared.
[Choice Rejected]
You have not selected a path.
Why?
Azrael smiled.
"Because none of them represents everything I want."
The hall became silent.
"I don’t want to rule."
"I don’t want to become the strongest just to prove that I’m the strongest."
"I don’t want to spend my entire life protecting people while forgetting myself."
"And I don’t want to destroy simply because destruction is part of me."
He looked toward the five doors.
"I want to decide who I become."
The entire hall trembled.
The five doors vanished.
A sixth door appeared.
It was completely black.
No symbol.
No inscription.
Azrael stared at it.
The System appeared.
[Hidden Choice Detected]
Path of Self
Requirement:
Reject predetermined purpose.
Trial condition fulfilled.
Azrael walked through the door.
Across the hall, Seraphina stood before the flower.
She had already chosen it.
But she didn’t enter.
She looked toward Azrael’s disappearing figure.
Then smiled.
"I understand."
She turned back to the flower.
"I don’t want to create because people expect me to."
The flower remained still.
"I want to create because I love seeing things grow."
The door opened.
Caelan stood before the shield.
He placed his hand against it.
"I choose this."
The shield glowed.
"Not because I’m afraid of losing."
"But because I want to protect what matters."
The door opened.
Lyanna stood before the shadow.
She smiled.
"This one."
The shadow responded immediately.
She stepped forward.
"I don’t need to disappear from everyone."
"I only need to know when to be seen."
The shadow opened.
Orin stood before the sword.
He stared at it for a long time.
Then he turned away.
"I don’t actually want the sword."
Lyanna’s voice echoed from the neighboring path.
"Then why were you staring at it for so long?"
Orin sighed.
"Because it looked cool."
She laughed.
Orin looked toward the shield.
Then he smiled.
"I’ll choose this."
The shield opened.
One by one, the five paths closed behind them.
The hall disappeared.
Azrael found himself standing in a small room.
There was only one chair.
A table.
And a cup of water.
Nothing else.
He looked around.
"That’s it?"
The System appeared.
[Path of Self]
Final Question:
Who are you?
Azrael stared at the words.
He expected another challenge.
A monster.
A battle.
A puzzle.
Instead, there was only a question.
He sat down.
Who was he?
An Aetherion.
The twin of Seraphina.
A disciple of the mysterious old master.
A swordsman.
A cultivator.
A person carrying Genesis and Oblivion within the same existence.
But none of those answers felt complete.
They were descriptions.
Not an identity.
Azrael slowly looked at his reflection in the cup of water.
"I am Azrael."
The System didn’t respond.
He smiled.
"Not a title."
"Not a bloodline."
"Not a prophecy."
"Not a weapon."
"Just..."
He paused.
"...me."
The room became completely silent.
Then the System appeared.

Azrael stood.
The room disappeared.
He returned to the central hall.
Seraphina was already there.
She looked at him.
"What did you get?"
Azrael smiled.
"A question."
"What was the answer?"
"I think I found it."
She smiled.
"Good."
Caelan, Lyanna, and Orin soon returned as well.
The System appeared before everyone.

A massive staircase appeared.
But unlike the previous floors, there was something different about it.
At the top of the stairs was a large golden number.
17
Orin stared upward.
"Seventeen."
Caelan nodded.
"We’re getting close to the upper floors."
Azrael looked at Seraphina.
"Ready?"
She smiled.
"Always."
They began climbing.
None of them knew what awaited them on the Seventeenth Floor.
But they were no longer simply following the Tower’s path.
They were beginning to create their own.
