Chapter 43: How easy they have it

After eating his quick snack, Sarah led John back into the elevator, which swiftly descended to the underground car park where a car was waiting for them and after climbing aboard, the car departed for the heart of Eclipse City.

As the traveled, John asked, “Does that elevator stop at each of the floors?”

“No,” Sarah replied. “That entire car park is for the VIP residents only and the elevator only serves the top ten floors. There is a separate car park and elevator that the other residents use as well as the elevators in the main foyer.”

John nodded in understanding before Sarah said, “I got a message from Dawn Star; she’s confirmed that the trick works, as even when she died in the weapons hall and lost a level, she kept the stat points.”

“Oh right, I asked her to keep me informed,” John remembered.

“She said,” Sarah chuckled. “However, you were so focused on your own training that she felt bad about interrupting you and so messaged me instead.”

“I guess I should have thought of that,” John replied while rubbing the back of his neck.

“How’s the progress?” Jessica asked from the driver's seat since she was the only bodyguard going with them today.

“I completed the defence training and got the parry defence skill, but that’s all,” John replied. “I’m not working on martial arts but have so far only died once.”

“You must be the only person who has spoken so nonchalantly about dying in Genesis,” Sarah remarked while shaking her head.

“I’m not surprised you didn’t get anything along with the parry defence skill; it’s not like Tia can give a damage bonus to defence,” Jessica stated

It didn’t take them long before Jessica was once again pulling the car into another underground carpark, this time one belonging to a shopping mall that was blocked by a barrier. John looked around but couldn’t see any control to open the barrier and was just about to warn Jessica to stop when the barrier opened automatically.

{Damn, that could have been embarrassing.} John thought in relief and as with back at the hotel, he noticed that all the cars in this car park appeared to be top-of-the-line luxury ones.

After Jessica pulled the car into one of the available spaces and stopped, John went to open the car door and climb out, only for movement from Sarah to cause him to turn and look at her. She was in the process of tying her long black hair up into a bun, which she then covered with a cap that she placed on her head before finally putting on a pair of glasses. Noticing that John was looking at her, Sarah smiled and asked, “How do I look?”

“I didn’t realise you wore glasses,” John replied. “Do you only need them for reading or something?”

Upon hearing his reply, both Sarah and Jessica broke out in chuckles before Sarah said, “It’s my disguise.”

“Disguise?” John asked in confusion.

“Oh come now, John, surely you know how famous Sarah is?” Jessica asked.

“Well sure,” John replied. “She’s the most famous female human player of our generation.”

“And that means?” Jessica asked while waving his hand for him to continue.

“That she's famous,” John replied while tilting his head in confusion.

“That she’s popular. Honestly, don’t you know anything about celebrities?” Jessica sighed as the three of them alighted from the car and headed for a nearby elevator.

“Nope, never met one before two days ago and never paid any attention to them either,” John replied.

“Seriously?” Jessica asked in surprise as she pressed the button to call the elevator.

“Never had the time for them since I was too busy trying to survive,” John shrugged. “Besides, why would I want to bother thinking about them? It would only piss me off when I think about how easy they have it.”

“Easy?” Sarah asked just before the elevator doors opened and they stepped inside.

“Expensive clothes, cars, accessories. High-end villas and apartments. High-class friends, adoring fans,” John listed off before asking. “How is that not easy compared to what I had to deal with day in and day out?”

Sarah and Jessica glanced at each other before Sarah stated, “I won’t deny that you had it rough, but some celebrities work just as hard to get where they are today. Take her, for example.” And as she finished, Sarah pointed at a holographic promotional video that was playing on one of the elevator walls and seemed vaguely familiar to John.

“Do you know who that is?” Sarah asked.

“Melissa Delacruz, it says the name on the advert,” John replied, causing Jessica to chuckle.

“Fair point,” Sarah conceded before asking, “But have you heard of her before now?”

John glanced at the advert again before shrugging and saying, “The advert seems familiar; I think I might have seen it somewhere before.”

“You're seriously telling me you’ve never heard of Melissa Delacruz?” Jessica asked in astonishment. “She’s the biggest diva in the human race and one of the top divas on the planet.”

“I think I heard the name in passing a few times on the building site,” John replied. “It was usually after a song finished playing on the radio.”

Jessica gaped at John before thinking, {He’s seriously never heard of Melissa Delacruz? I didn’t think there was a human male alive who hadn’t heard of her.}

“Where are you going with this?” John asked in mild annoyance, which Sarah picked up on and so continued, “All I’m saying is that while people tend to only see the high life that Melissa Delacruz’s lives, they don’t see all the work she puts in behind the scenes when the cameras and eyes of the world aren’t watching her.

Hours of practice to get her songs just right, rigidly strict diets to keep her body in perfect shape, pre-planned itineraries with little to no room for adjustment. I’m not saying that you haven’t worked hard the last eleven years; you have and you should have been compensated for that. But Melissa Delacruz also worked hard to get where she is today, and so did I.”

“Did either of you perform illegal, underpaid labour just to survive?” John asked.

“Well, no,” Sarah replied.

“That’s what I thought,” John replied just as the elevator doors slid open, allowing him to quickly step out,

Sarah sighed and gave John a sad look as she followed him out, along with Jessica, who bent down and whispered, “Don’t try to understand what he’s been through, or make it sound like other people have had it just as tough as you’ll never understand and most people will never experience what he experienced.”

“I understand that but…” Sarah began, only for Jessica to cut her off. “No, Sarah, you don’t. You’re the empress’s niece; you were literally born with a silver spoon in your mouth and you've never wanted for anything. You're like, up until now, it's literally the complete opposite of his; honestly, even I can barely understand what he’s been through and you know I come from a poor household myself.”

“I understand,” Sarah sighed.

“If that’s true, then go apologise to him before this damages your friendship,” Jessica replied before giving Sarah a slight shove in the back.

Sarah stumbled forward slightly before stabilising herself, after which she hurried to catch up to John while saying, “I’m sorry. I have no right to lecture you on your beliefs after everything you have been through. I’ll probably never understand how hard your life was before now.”

John stopped and turned to her in surprise and only after seeing the serious look on her face did he nod and say, “It’s fine; I may have gotten a little overemotional myself.”

Sarah smiled at his reply and as John smiled back, he asked, “So is that disguise to prevent all your adoring fans from noticing you?”

“Yeah,” Sarah sighed before they continued walking. “I appreciate my fans really, and I appreciate the title of most famous human female player that I’ve been given. But sometimes you just want some peace and quiet away from all that. If I didn’t wear my disguise, people would already be surrounding me asking me questions, wanting my autograph and requesting photos.”

John nodded and was about to reply when a voice suddenly said very sarcastically, “Wow, sounds terrible. How on Atlantia do you survive?”

The trio turned to see an attractive young woman with long brown hair, blue eyes and tits of a size John had only seen once before and that was when he thought they were purposefully enlarged.

“Mel, I thought we planned to meet a bit later?” Sarah asked with a smile before she stepped forward and hugged the new arrival.

“I was bored and so I decided to come do a little shopping on my own before meeting up. Who knew I would still end up meeting you before the scheduled meeting time?” The woman named Mel replied while returning the hug with a smile of her own.

“Well, I suppose it’s fine since it saves us some time,” Sarah replied before turning to John and saying, “John, this is my friend Mel, or as you might know her…”

“Dawn Star,” John said in surprise as he finished Sarah’s sentence.

“Bingo, Vincarna,” Dawn Star replied. “Though I suppose I should call you John since we’re not in Genesis at the moment.”

“So they are real,” John stated in surprise.
