Chapter 42: Beats what I was doing in the past

Atop the top floor of one of the few skyscrapers of Eclipse City, around a dozen men and women that where all dressed in expensive clothes sat on either side of a long conference table, looking nervously at the man who sat at the head of the table and was frowning while tapping his finger upon it. Eventually, the man asked, “Can one of you please explain to me how some nobody from Dawnscape City acquired two percent of all my corporation's future sales?”

The man in question was Clifford Sanders, CEO and founder of Sanders Incorporated and mayor of Silver City.

“Tia authorised this after learning that the citizen in question was forced to pay rent at one of our properties, even though he was underage.”

“I already know that much,” Clifford snapped. “What I want to know is how this happened in the first place and why it wasn’t rectified before it came to Tia’s attention, or at least covered up.”

“Results from our ongoing investigation seem to indicate that the individual responsible for looking after the property in question, one David Thompson, was in fact collecting the payments personally instead of it going through the usual channels. This allowed him to cover the whole thing up from the company as well as keep the payments himself.”

“Bastard,” Clifford cursed before asking. “And the supposed victim who now essentially owns shares in my company without even having purchased them, do we know their identity?”

“No, Tia did not release the individual's identity and everyone who could know it is currently being held for interrogation by the military.”

“Send more people to Dawnscape City to investigate the individual's identity; it shouldn’t be that hard to notice someone who suddenly came into wealth.”

Dawn Star and Frank stared at the location Vincarna had just been before Dawn Star suddenly burst out into glorious laughter that caught the attention of everyone who heard it, causing them to look over. Only then did she realise that she had laughed using her normal voice and quickly stopped.

“Damn, Dawn Star. I never knew you had such a beautiful voice,” Frank stated in surprise.

“Err, yeah,” Dawn Star answered nervously as people continued to look her way.

Frank could tell that Dawn Star had suddenly become nervous and so turned and shouted at the people still staring at her, “WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU LOT THINK YOU'RE DOING? YOU THINK YOU’LL LEARN HOW TO WIELD THOSE WEAPONS JUST BY STARING AT GIRLS? GET BACK TO WORK.”

“Thanks,” Dawn Star said quietly as those watching quickly turned away and returned to training.

“Don’t mention it,” Frank replied before adding. “I should go keep an eye on them so they don’t slack off again; you work hard.”

Dawn Star nodded and watched him leave before turning back to where Vincarna had been moments before. {I can’t believe he died from training too hard.} As she thought of this, Dawn Star couched down and covered her mouth with her hands as she tried not to laugh out loud again.

[You have died]

[Unable to lose a level as you are level 0]

[Because you died in the starter village, you will not suffer the 24-hour logout penalty or have any of your stat points reduced]

[Re-spawning at the closest Re-spawn sight]

As John's vision returned, he again found himself in the graveyard, and after checking his notifications, he saw that he had once again died from hunger, causing him to sigh as he cleared the notification window before jogging back to the weapons hall

Unlawfully taken from NovelPhoenix, this story should be reported if seen on Amazon.

As he reentered the weapons hall, he was surprised to find Dawn Star smiling and waving at him next to the training circle he had just died in. He gave her a curious look before making his way over to her while thinking, {Yeah, there's no way those are real.}

“Hey, I’m guessing Sarah informed you about our discovery?” John asked as he arrived in front of her.

“According to her, it was your discovery,” Dawn Star replied while smiling.

“Meh,” John shrugged before asking. “So you're here to train?”

“Yup,” Dawn Star nodded. “I plan to train in every single weapon like you until I die and only move on to the next once I gain its mastery.” {He’s not claiming credit for his discovery? Normally people love to brag about anything new they discover in Genesis, especially to me.}

“Are you sure you can manage it?” John asked, causing Dawn Star to frown.

“Don’t underestimate me, Vincerna.”

“I meant no disrespect,” John replied while waving his hands. “It’s just that you have to continually practice the same moves for over six hours before you die, only to start again after. That’s not something everyone can do.”

“Oh, I see what you mean, sorry,” Dawn Star apologised before asking, “Are you saying you can only do it because you enter the zone when training?”

“The zone?” John asked in confusion.

“Perhaps you know it by what Trainer Frank calls it, the state of flow,” Dawn Star replied, but upon John shaking his head in confusion, she decided to explain what the zone was. “It’s a state where…”

Only after her explanation did John’s face light up with realisation as he said, “Oh, so it’s like that. I just thought I was lost in my enjoyment.”

“You enjoy this training?” Dawn Star asked in surprise.

John nodded while saying, “Beats what I was doing in the past.”

“Hmm,” Dawn Star replied but didn’t bother asking for more information because Sarah had already confided in her that John was, in fact, the citizen Tia mentioned in the racial punishment announcement.

{Just what hardships did you have to endure over those eleven years?} Dawn Star thought as she looked at John sympathetically. {And here I thought I had to work hard; at least I enjoy what I do.}

“What’s with the sympathetic look?” John asked. “It’s not like I’m being forced to do this.”

“Oh right, sorry,” Dawn Star apologised before thrusting out her chest and boasting. “But to answer your earlier question, I’ll be fine; I’m also capable of entering the zone.”

“Then I hope you succeed,” John replied as his eyes automatically dropped to the ravine that had enlarged before him before he forced his eyes quickly back up to her face.

{Hmm, I was expecting more of a response. Normally people are impressed when they learn I can enter the zone. Whatever, at least I know he's still a man of desire; don’t think I didn’t notice you looking.}

“I will admit I hadn’t planned to spend so long in the starter village, however,” Dawn Star continued.

“Yeah, we’re definitely going to be doing this for several days,” John nodded.

Dawn Star nodded before asking, “Have you already managed to complete any?”

“Only the defence training, but that only gives parry defence,” John replied.

“Maybe, but it still lets you keep your stats, so it’s worth doing just for that,” Dawn Star answered before turning and heading towards the defence training section while adding. “I guess I’ll also start with that.”

“Let me know if you get the same effect when you die. I promised to keep Sarah and the others informed.”

“Sure, that’s the least I can do for you in return for the kindness you've shown me,” Dawn Star said with a smile as she glanced back over her shoulder.

“You're Sarah’s friend and you're easy to talk to, so it only makes sense to inform you,” John replied before he stepped into the circle and began training again.

Dawn Star stopped at the edge of her own circle and stared at him for a few seconds while thinking, {Sarah’s friend again, huh. Why doesn’t that feel as nice as the first time he said it?}

Six hours later, John died and he received the familiar set of messages after respawning at the graveyard; However this time there was another one from Sarah.

[Blue Ice Queen: Wake up lazy bones, it's time to go shopping, let me know when you read this and you're logging out.]

[Vincarna: Morning, thanks for the message. I’m logging out now.]

John sent a reply before saying.

"Log out"

[Logging out. Thank you for playing Genesis.]

After John opened his eyes, he headed to the bathroom to grab a shower before wearing the same clothes for the third day in a row and giving them a quick sniff. "Yeah, these are starting to smell. I should have at least thought to wash them before I started playing last night, then at least they wouldn’t be starting to smell."

Just as he was grabbing a quick breakfast snack, a ding came from the elevator before the doors opened, and Alea and Jessica stepped into the apartment while smiling at him.

"Morning," Sarah greeted.

"Morning. I am just making a breakfast snack. Would you like anything? John replied.

"No, thanks, I already ate," Sarah replied while Jessica shook her head.
