“HAHA, I was right,” John said gleefully as he smiled at the huge number that appeared in the notification.
“EIGHTY FUCKING DAMAGE!” Samwise yelled in shock.
“YOU GOTTA BE SHITTING ME,” Albert replied.
[Enemy Defeated]
[NOTICE: Because your level is over 1 level lower than the defeated enemy’s, the XP amount rewarded is increased by 50%]
[23 exp rewarded]
[Exp: 61/300>>84/300]
[NOTICE: Because the enemy you defeated attacked you first, you can choose one item to claim from their loot pool]
{I guess she caught the little cat.} John thought with a smirk before he brought his foot down on Samwise's throat again.
[Super Critical! Damage Dealt: 52 to player Samwise the Mighty]
[Opponent Stunned for 2 seconds]
{Shame arcane missiles has a one-second cooldown.}
“FUCKING HELP ME, YOU HUMAN TRASH!” Samwise shouted in panic.
“I’ve been fucking trying,” Albert retorted before adding. “And if you keep calling me trash, I’m gonna leave you here to die.”
[Damage Taken: 0 dealt by player Prince of Dawn team member Albert]
"FUCK!" Albert yelled as that same heartbreaking number was seen.
“You know I don’t even feel those basic attacks, right?” John asked before he brought his foot down on Samwise for the last time.

{I could have finished him off with arcane missiles, but I figured that would be enough to kill him, so why waste the mana?} John thought before turning to Albert and saying, "And then there was one."
"Brother, listen, this has been a big mistake; we can talk this out, and I can even talk to Dean about getting you into the Dawnscape City guild. Everyone from school is joining it; Dean even has his own team."
{Right, it’s customary for a graduating class to join their city’s registered guild once they complete the starter village. Only those who have connections with other guilds or like to play solo don’t.} John thought before smiling at Albert and saying, “Nah, I’ll pass, but if you still want to talk later, just come back and find me after your trip to the graveyard."
“AWW, hell nah, fuck this,” Albert said as he finally decided to turn and flee.
“Really?” John asked as he held up his hand and fired an arcane missile into Albert's back, causing him to stumble.

[Damage Dealt: 29 to player Prince of Dawn team member Albert]
[MP:120]
John quickly caught up to him and grabbed Albert by the scruff of the neck, causing him to curse, "GET THE FUCK OFF ME!" He tried to break John’s grip on him, but since John's strength stat was much higher, he could do nothing except have his legs swiped out from under him.
As Albert hit the ground, John placed his hand over his throat before firing off another arcane missile.
[Super Critical! Damage Dealt: 116 to player Prince of Dawn team member Albert]
[MP:110]
“Hoo, one hundred and sixteen damage, do you even have any endurance?” John asked in surprise as he saw the damage number pop up.
“FUCK YOU, HACKER!” Albert cursed back.
“Wow, talk about a sore loser,” John smirked as he brought his foot down on Albert’s throat.
[Super Critical! Damage Dealt: 58 to player Prince of Dawn team member Albert]
“Wow, I never knew you were into that sort of play,” A teasing voice suddenly said before Mel reappeared from the forest.
“I’m not… at least not with him,” John replied as he brought his foot down for the final time and asked. “Did you get any good loot from the kitsune?”

“Didn’t bother checking,” Mel replied while shaking her head.
“Why not?” John asked curiously.
“You're seriously asking me that?” Mel asked in surprise. “Don’t you know how loot works in Genesis?”
“Err, you kill the enemy and then get some loot,” John replied as if it was the most obvious thing in Genesis.
“Oh gods, you really are hopeless, and Sarah told me you had been trying to learn more about Genesis,” Mel sighed before explaining. “Ok yes, the general premise of when you kill an NPC or non-player character, whether they be a monster or person, is that you are randomly rewarded one or more pieces of loot depending on the enemy's rank; the sole exception is that people always give gold along with that piece of loot, whereas monsters don’t.”
“Because monsters don’t carry gold,” Adam said in understanding.
“Very good, A star,” Mel said with a teasing smile before continuing. “However, it works differently when you fight other players, such as in PVP or player-vs-player. In those cases, the loot is rewarded depending on whether the winning party attacked first or not.
Let's take this fight as an example,” Mel said as she waved around at the three dead corpses and asked, I’m assuming they attacked you first?”
“Yup,” Adam nodded before remembering. “I did get some kind of notification regarding that.”
“Exactly,” Mel smiled. “In such situations, as the player who was attacked first and won, the randomness of the loot is cancelled, and you get to inspect the player's loot table and choose any one item. If, however, you had attacked them first, then the loot would have been randomised.”
“Anything?” John asked in surprise.
“Well, anything not soulbound, which is highly unlikely to be the case within the starter village,” Mel replied.
“I read about souldbound items; they are weapons and gear that can’t be dropped, sold or traded, right?” John asked.
“I guess you are doing your homework after all, good boy; remind me to reward you later,” Mel replied.
John frowned before saying, “I’m not sure I appreciate that attitude.”
{You would be the first; other men love it when I treat them like this.} Mel thought before adding with a flirtatious wink, “That’s because you haven’t seen the reward yet.”
“Riiiggghhhttt,” John replied before asking, “So you didn’t loot the kitsune because the loot would have been randomised?”
{He didn’t react?} Mel thought in surprise.
“Mel?” John asked as he saw that she appeared to be lost in thought.
“What? Oh, sorry, yeah, I didn’t loot her because it would have been randomised,” Mel said, slightly flustered. “Though it would have been different if we were in the same part before the fight began.”
“But then couldn’t you have stolen the loot from the Kitsune?” John asked curiously.
“Technically,” Mel nodded. “All a person has to do to be eligible for a defeated enemy’s loot is land a damaging attack on them. Because of this, there are a lot of players out there who specifically play this way. They wait until an enemy is nearly defeated before they damage said enemy and attack the players while they're distracted and weakened.”
“Sounds scummy,” John replied with a frown.
“You're not wrong, but Genesis encourages freedom and for players to play as they wish, so while it’s frowned upon, it’s not against any rules,” Mel shrugged before pointing at Albert’s corpse while adding. “You should check the loot.”
John nodded and bent down to touch the corpse and retrieve the loot, when suddenly a small object flew out of it. The object was circular with the image of an Anubis head engraved on the front; the majority of the object was jet black except for some gold detailing on the Anubis head engraving along with red eyes. The object hovered there for a few seconds before vanishing inside, after which a notification window appeared.
[You have received ???]
[Someone is observing you.]
“That's… ominous,” John remarked as he saw the notification.
“What is?” Mel asked curiously. “Find something interesting?”
“You didn’t see that?” John asked in surprise.
“See what?” Mel asked back in confusion.
“The strange thing that just flew inside me.”
Mel tilted her head and asked, “Pardon?”
“As I bent down to check the loot, a small circular object with the engraving of an Anubis head flew out of him and into me,” John explained before showing her the notification window while adding, “Then I got this message.”
“An unrecognisable item and someone is observing you?” Mel asked in surprise before adding, “Could it be related to your opportunity?”
John frowned as he heard her question before asking, “Why would my opportunity be related to this bully?”
“Bully?” Mel repeated.
“He’s one of the gang that used to bully me back in school,” John replied. “Aparently the main culprit behind it all is called Prince of Dawn and is recruiting the same lackeys here in Genesis as in real life.”
