That doesn’t sound so bad, but it also depends on the skill I receive. Though what’s up with that failure statement? It seems kinda weird.} John thought and was about to accept when he suddenly remembered something Frank had told him after one of his many deaths back at the training hall.
“Listen here, Vincarna. I know it might seem tough, but you're going about this the right way.”
“The right way?” John repeated in confusion before asking. “Is there another way to complete this training?”
“Well, no, but that’s not what I meant. I mean you're putting in the work to get the reward; all the best rewards are those you earn yourself. Once you leave the village and venture out into the world, you're likely to meet people who will offer to enhance your strength quickly for a favour; the problem is that these quick enhancements often come with unforeseen consequences,
The gods don’t like it when you gain something you didn’t earn yourself and so intervene. All I’m saying is that if someone offers you something that seems too good to be true, it usually is, especially when it comes to increases in your own strength.”
{Huh, I didn’t think much of Frank’s pep talk back then since I was so focused on completing all the weapons training, and honestly I thought him mentioning gods was just his superstition. Only now do I know that gods do exist in Genesis; also, there's the fact that Tia herself said, ‘only those who demonstrate admirable qualities such as hard work will discover such secrets.’}
After thinking of this, John stared at the old man and asked, “Can I have the information and forgo the early awakening of my skill?”
The old man’s eyebrow twitched slightly before shrugging and said, “Sure, no skin off my nose.”
{What was with that reaction? This whole thing is starting to feel bad, and then there’s that strange failure message; nah, this whole thing stinks.}
“I decline,” John said before turning on his heel and leaving the shop.
[Quest declined]
“HEY KID, WAIT!” The old man shouted, but John ignored him and proceeded down the street.
{God damn swindler, there was definitely something off about that whole deal. Thank God I remembered Frank’s advice, or I could have permanently damaged my living armour. I suppose I did get some good information out of him though, assuming that who thing about living armour was true. I need to find someone trustworthy who can give me real answers.} John thought as he walked away from the shop before suddenly coming to a stop. {Answers? Doesn’t that spell I received from Lord Ursa grant answers?}
As John thought of this, he muttered, “Spells,” causing his spellbook to open in front of him before he found the spell in question and focused on it.
[Guidance: Seek answers from the stars when you are unsure of the path to take.]
[Nature Element]
[Channelled until Guidance completes]
[Cost: 50% off maximum MP]
[Cooldown: 3 days]
{I guess it can’t hurt to try it since it’s still the first day. With a cooldown of three days, I’ll be able to use it twice before the quest time runs out. Luckily, it’s night and the stars are out, though I’m not sure if that makes any difference.}
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
With his plan decided, John set off in search of a secluded spot to use the spell. Since it stated that the spell needed to be channelled until it was completed, and he had no idea how long that would be, he figured it was best to do it away from prying eyes.
So John began to wander around the city in search of someplace suitable, and as he did so, he happened to pass an inn that had light shining out of its open door and windows, and he could also hear the sounds of cheering and laughter from inside.
{An inn could work since you're apparently protected while in your rented room; also, I might be able to get the buff Mel told me about.}
John approached the inn and headed inside to find a reception desk right in front of the doorway; to the right of the desk was a bar area where people from different races were drinking and laughing. On the left was a type of restaurant with many tables that people sat and ate at.
[Notice: You have entered an inn. Every eight hours spent here will give you one hour's worth of experience buff.]
“Be right with you,” A voice called from the restaurant area, and after only a few minutes, an attractive young woman appeared behind the counter and said, “Apologies for the wait, how…”
However, for some reason, the woman's words got lost in her throat as she laid eyes on him, causing John to tilt his head in confusion and ask, “Is something wrong?”
“What? Oh no, no,” the woman quickly replied while blushing slightly before she continued. “Sorry about the wait. My name's Rosey. How can I help you?”
“It’s fine; it seems like you're busy,” John replied while glancing around again.
“Every night,” Rosey said with a smile.
“That must mean your rooms and food are good,” John replied, causing Rosey to blush again for some reason before she said. “Never had any complaints… well, except from nobles, but you can’t judge the standards of those snobs.”
“Sounds like there’s a story there; I’d love to hear it when you're not so busy.”
“I’d be happy to tell you,” Rosey replied before asking. “So is it food, board, both or something a little extra?”
As Rosey said ‘a little extra’, John could have sworn her voice lowered slightly and became more sultry; however, he decided he was imagining things and so said, “Board, please, how much for one night?”
“Oh,” Rosey said in a downcast tone before quickly recovering and saying, “One night is two silvers, and that includes breakfast, though if you pay for a whole week upfront you only pay twelve silvers.”
“Buy six, get one free, huh, a good business strategy,” John replied.
“Yeah, my mum thought it up, and it’s been working great,” Rosey replied, clearly happy at the compliment.
“Unfortunately, I can’t afford a week yet, so for now I’ll just take one night and try to earn more coin tomorrow,” John replied.
“Rightio,” Rosey replied as she pulled out a ledger and started to write in it while asking, “Your name?”
“Vincarna,” John replied, causing Rosey to look up and say, “Sounds elvish.”
“Attractive and smart, your patrons better watch out,” John teased while taking out two silver coins and placing them on the reception counter.
Rosey blushed and giggled at the compliment before leaning slightly forward in a way that emphasised her cleavage while adding in a low voice, “Does that include you?”
“Well, I guess I am a patron,” John replied as his eyes couldn’t help but drop to her cleavage, something Rosey noticed and was happy about.
“Well,” she suddenly said while pulling her cleavage back and placing a key on the counter, adding. “You're in room two zero three on the second floor. I do hope you have a pleasant stay, but if there’s anything I can personally do to make your stay more enjoyable, please do call upon me.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” John said with a smile before he grabbed the key and headed for the stairs up to the second floor.
Rosey watched him go while biting her lip and shuffling her legs slightly before a loud female voice called, “ROSEY! GET IN HERE, WE HAVE FOOD WAITING TO BE DELIVERED.”
Rosey jumped at the shout before hurrying back to the restaurant area.
{I’m no expert, but was she flirting with me?} John wondered as he climbed the stairs.
Not having any experience in things such as relationships and intimacy, John wasn’t sure if he was right or just imagining things again. {I know you can have sex in Genesis, since Sarah caught her ex doing it, but I’m not sure if you can have sex with NPC’s.}
As he was lost in thought, he soon arrived at room 203, and after unlocking the door, he proceeded inside before locking it again.
[Notice: You have entered a safe zone. No one will be able to enter your room without your permission.]
No longer had he locked the door and seen the notification when a beautiful female voice greeted him by asking, “Are you sure you want to turn her down? She seems quite taken by you.”
John spun round to find a woman more beautiful than he had ever seen sitting on one of the chairs in the room, smiling at him. She had long silver hair that seemed to shimmer as the moonlight that shone in through the room's window hit it, and eyes that seemed to shine like starlight. Her clothing was a shimmering white-silver dress that seemed to sparkle like stars and covered almost her entire body, all the way down to her feet; the only skin showing was her hands and upward from just below her shoulders.
