John logged back into Genesis and found himself still in the room he had rented from the inn. He and Sarah had talked about a variety of things for a while until Sarah received a message from Mel saying that she had made it to Waning City. After that, Sarah had returned to her own apartment after telling John she would meet them both in Waning City.

{I bet she wants to tag along to Thamethalas, though I don’t know why she couldn’t have just told me that.}

John left his room before heading down the stairs towards the entrance. As he did, a voice suddenly called out to him, asking, “Are you heading out, Vincarna?”

John stopped and turned back to see Rosey looking at him with obvious disappointment, causing him to nod and say, “Yes, I have an errand to run, but I’ll be back later.”

Hearing that he’ll return, Rosey perked up before nodding and saying, “Ok, stay safe.”

“Thanks,” John said with a smile before heading out while thinking, {After Astraea’s commented earlier, it’s obvious now that she was indeed flirting with me. Sorry, Rosey, but unlike other boys my age, I’m not confident enough to invite you to my room. I worked in a brothel shortly after becoming an orphan, but I have no personal experience.}

John had done many odd jobs after becoming an orphan, and one of the earlier ones was working in a brothel as a cleaner and general go-to man. However, while he got along with everyone there, including the courtesans who thought he was cute, once he reached fourteen, the manager decided to lay him off. She didn't like the idea of a horny young boy being around all her workers.

So while he had never seen the courtesans at work, he had learned a thing or two from overhearing their discussions regarding their clientele, though he’d never had the chance to put any of it into practice.

{I suppose Genesis would be a better place to experience my first time; it would definitely save me from being completely embarrassed should I be unable to perform.}

As he was lost in thought, John made his way towards the teleportation hall, which he had arranged with Sarah as their meeting point. Since he and Mel were both still new to Waning City, it was the most obvious place for them all to meet up.

Upon his arrival, he quickly found the pair as they appeared to be with another woman while a large group of players had surrounded them, or more specifically, Sarah. Blue Ice Queen was still a hot topic for everyone, as she was the first player to successfully perform a rebirth, and as such, everyone was interested in how she’d done it.

Within the crowd that had surrounded them, John noticed a few hovercams floating above several of the players, which surprised him since that level of technology was far too advanced for the time period in which Genesis was supposed to be set.

Since Sarah seemed so distracted by the crowd, John decided to message Mel instead and let her know that he had arrived. Shortly after doing so, he saw her looking around as if searching for someone before she spotted him and smiled, after which she began to squeeze through the crowd to approach him.

Surprisingly, John noticed that Mel didn’t seem to be alone but was accompanied by a nine-tailed Kitsune with black fur and purple eyes, whose eyes seemed to widen as she noticed him before quickly returning to normal.

{Seriously? Aren’t nine-tailed Kitsune supposed to be rare? Why is this like the second I’ve met in as many days?} John thought to himself as Mel approached him and said, “Hi, thanks so much for agreeing to help with this.”

“It’s fine; it just so happens that Elrinira seems to be in elf territory,” John replied before glancing quizzically at the Kitsune.

“Oh! Let me introduce you,” Mel offered as she noticed John’s gaze. “This is a friend of mine and Sarah’s Ninth Wonder of the World, and yeah, I already lectured her on the name.”

“Rude,” Ninth Wonder of the World replied before looking at John and saying, “A pleasure to meet you.”

“The pleasure is mine, honoured ninth tail. It seems fate is smiling on me since I am fortunate enough to have encountered another of your stature just recently,” John replied in the Kitsune’s native tongue, causing Mel to stare at him in surprise before asking. “You speak Kit?”

“Roughly,” John replied, causing the Ninth Wonder of the World to chuckle before saying, “I would hardly call it rough. I have met few outsiders who speak my language as well as you do.”

“You honour me with this praise,” John replied, causing Mel to look between the pair in confusion and say in embarrassment, “I caught a few words, but I missed most of that.”

“It’s fine; we were just sharing a greeting,” Ninth Wonder of the World replied calmly, though internally she was freaking out. {It’s him, it’s actually him. How is it possible that the human I met previously was actually John Michaels? Is this really fate's will to bring us together?}

“Rigghhtt,” Mel replied before smirking at Ninth Wonder of the World and saying, “Anyway, don’t you have a bone to pick with John here?”

“You told her my name?” John asked with a slight frown, causing Mel to panic and wave her hands while saying. “It couldn’t be helped; we were discussing something random, and your name came up along with how she's upset that you stole her apartment.”

“Hmm,” John replied, giving Mel a suspicious look while thinking. {What sort of conversation could have led her to reveal my identity.}

{Fuck! I messed up; I hope he doesn’t hate me now.} Mel cursed internally as John continued to stare at her before turning back to Ninth Wonder of the World and asking. “Apartment?”

Ninth Wonder of the World chuckled slightly before saying, “It’s nothing major. I was just wondering who had acquired the penthouse apartment of Eclipse Views since I was originally meant to stay there while I attend university in Eclipse City.

“OH!” John said in surprise. “From what I was told, the penthouse apartment used to be for dignitaries of other nations. If you were originally supposed to be staying there, then you must be someone important in the Kitsune race. Please forgive my lacklustre introduction.”

“It was hardly lacklustre,” Ninth Wonder of the World said with a smile. “You greeted me with more respect than most of your race.”

Mel looked between the pair of them in confusion before John motioned towards Sarah and asked, “So what are we going to do about that? I got the impression that she wanted to travel to Thamethalas with us.”

“Your taveling to Thamethalas,” Ninth Wonder of the World asked in surprise before adding. “How?”

Mel glanced at John, who sighed before saying, “I acquired the ability to teleport us there.”

“Really?” Ninth Wonder of the World asked with interest. “I would be most interested in hearing that tale in the future, but for now perhaps you will allow me to accompany you there? I have always wondered how similar Thamethalas is to Asyath Serin in the real world.”

“I don’t see why not,” John replied before turning back to Mel and asking again. “So Sarah?”

“She’s just too popular for her own good,” Mel sighed, which caused Ninth Wonder of the World to glance at her and mutter. “You're one to talk.”

Mel shot Ninth Wonder of the World a glare, which confused John, before turning back to look in Sarah’s direction and said, “If we don’t intervene, she'll never escape.”

“I assume they're all asking about her rebirth?” John asked.

“That or asking her out on dates,” Mel said, nodding. “She does have a reputation for bouncing around men after all.”

“She really needs to learn to take a break from them once in a while,” Ninth Wonder of the World commented while shaking her head, which caused Mel to glance at her and smirk while saying. “You're one to talk.”
