“I did,” John said, nodding. “Lord Ursa honoured me with his blessing.”
“How interesting,” Ratatoskr replied as he studied John more closely before asking. "So, what can I do for you both? I highly doubt the nice elf lady gave me food and brought you all here just to speak with me just because she wanted a chat."
Mel translated Ratatoskr's message to everyone before Silver Oracle said,
"We wish to ask if you know anything regarding the dark magic circle that was found within that shed, along with others around the temple.”
"Hmm, I did sense the creation of the dark magic you speak of. When I focused on it, I saw that a human cleric was trying to perform some kind of spell, though what it was I don't know because it failed, causing him to get very angry before leaving," Ratatoskr began to explain. "He sacrificed many animals, the majority being rats whose carcasses he left behind and stray cats later took away."
After Mel translated Lord Ratatoskr's reply, Silver Oracle said, "Now that you mention it, there have been a lot more stray cats around here recently."
As she finished speaking, John suddenly received a quest notification.
[Quest Notification]
[Find the animal killer (Epic)]
[The Sheolarbiter badge has reacted to the knowledge gained during your assistance in helping Silver Oracle.]
[Lord Ratatoskr has informed you that a human cleric has been killing many animals and using their blood for a strange magic ritual. The slaughter of so many animals affects the cycle of life and death, and therefore it is Sheolarbiter's duty to correct this balance.]
[Quest Goals:]
[Find the Human Cleric who is disrupting the cycle and stop him at any cost.]
[Quest success reward:]
[Might find knowledge regarding these dark magic circles that keep appearing and also a hint to why Elrinira is in the temple of The Order of the Mother Tree.]
[Epic (Purple) Item]
[Quest Failure punishment:]
[The evil Cleric will continue to disrupt the balance, and if not stopped, he may succeed in his evil plan and cause a great disaster to befall Thamethalas.]
[Loss of 3 Levels.]
[Do you Accept or Decline the Class Quest?]
[Accept] [Decline]
{The Sheolarbiter badge reacted? And from the way it reads, it seems the class is somehow connected to the balance of life and death.} John thought as he read the notification.
“Holy shit, I just received an epic quest from this with the possibility of a purple item reward,” Ninth Wonder of the World cursed in surprise.
“I also received it,” Sarah nodded before adding. “It points to there being more to these dark magic circles.”
“Mine mentions Elrinira; it seems she’s somehow involved in this,” John stated.
“Could she be assisting this clerk? She is one of the kings of the underworld after all,” Mel asked.
“Unlikely, young Druid,” Lord Ratatoskr replied. “You mortals often make the mistake of assuming the Seven Kings of the Underworld are evil, when in fact they play a vital role in the cycle of life and death. This is something you will come to learn if our young friend here becomes a Sheolarbiter.”
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
“You know about that?” John asked in surprise.
“I may not be a God, young one, but as the messenger of the gods I am naturally aware of their discussions,” Lord Ratatoskr replied.
John nodded in understanding before thinking, {Accept}
"Lord Ratatoskr, can you give me any information on who this Human Cleric is? Silver Oracle Asked.
"Sorry, but I can't help with that. All humanoids look the same to me; I tell them apart by the feel of their magic. Best I can tell you is that he is currently in the temple over in the east wing"
“Does he happen to be underground?” John asked, causing Lord Ratatoskr to stare at him again before asking. “Indeed, how did you know that, young one?”
“From a vision,” John replied, to which Lord Ratatoskr nodded before saying. “Ah, of course. That starry bear’s blessing granted you the guidance spell.”
After that, Lord Ratatoskr finished eating the last of the food before disappearing back up the tree, and Silver Oracle smiled at John while saying, “It really does appear that our quests are connected; how unexpected."
“Perhaps if I describe my vision to you, perhaps you will know the location we need to head to,” John replied before telling her everything he saw.
“How despicable. Still, I know the place you speak of; it’s an old library storage room used for storing old books,” Silver Oracle said angrily as she began to lead the way while adding. “To think he would kidnap elves and do that to them. Also, the fact that Elrinira seems to be in a relationship with him concerns me
“I didn’t think humans believed in polygamy?” Ninth Wonder of the World asked.
“It’s not a common practice and is indeed frowned upon by many, but there are certain individuals who crave the attention of more than one woman,” Sarah explained.
“What about you, John?” Ninth Wonder of the World asked with interest as she glanced at him. “Would you like more than one girlfriend or lover?”
“I’ve never had either, so I can’t answer that,” John replied, causing the women to glance at him with interest and for Mel to ask. “Because of your past?”
“Yeah,” John nodded. “I barely made enough to support myself, let alone buy gifts for a girlfriend.”
“Well, at least you know that a lady likes to receive gifts from her man,” Ninth Wonder of the World nodded approvingly while Sarah muttered. “I know a few men who do with learning that.”
“You learn a thing or two working in a brothel,” John replied, causing all four women’s heads to whip in his direction while Mel asked. “Brothel? Excuse me?”
“It was one of my first jobs when I was eleven, but I only did it for three years; the boss lady didn’t like the idea of me being around when my hormones began to kick in,” John explained nonchalantly.
But while John didn’t seem to be bothered about his sudden reveal, the same couldn’t be said for his companions.
{Fuck John, that shocked me.} Mel's thoughts.
{An eleven-year-old having to work in a brothel just to survive, how appalling.} Alea's thoughts.
{The more I find out about him, the more shocked I become.} Sarah’s thoughts.
{A brothel hub? I wonder if he learned any interesting techniques working there.} Shizu’s thoughts.
"We’re here; this is it,” John suddenly said, snapping everyone out of their thoughts as they arrived before the door he had seen in his vision.
Silver Oracle opened the door while saying, “I’ve never heard of a hidden staircase in here.”
"Well, it wouldn't be hidden if everyone knew about it now, would it?" John said with a chuckle as he walked into the storage room that was filled with many bookcases.
He led the way across the room to the bookcase at the very back, which he had seen in his vision before, pulling the book back the same way the human cleric had done.
There was a tiny click before the bookcase started to slide silently to the side, revealing the dark hidden staircase behind.
“Gotta admit that’s kinda cool,” Ninth Wonder of the World remarked, causing Mel to nod in agreement.
"Well, how about that? It was true; it's really here." John said, surprised.
"What, didn't you have faith in yourself or the vision?" Silver Oracle asked in a teasing tone that surprised the other women.
"Does it count as my doing if it was a spell?" John answered before he looked down the dark staircase and asked, “Ready?”
"Of course," The three women replied in excitement before they started walking down the staircase while John followed a moment later.
Alea extended her hand and caused an orb of light to appear above it, allowing them to see where the steps were. Thankfully, the staircase was not very long, and soon they saw light appear below, which caused Alea to cancel her spell before they began to move slowly and quietly as they tried to pick up on any possible sounds.
After a moment, they heard the whimpering of a woman crying, which caused them to exchange looks with furrowed brows, and as they crept closer, the whimpering only got louder until they were at the bottom of the stairs, revealing a small archway in front of them.
As they carefully looked into the room, the first thing that drew their attention was the same naked elf strapped to a table as John had described in his vision.
Now that they were right at the entryway, they could make out the sound of something dripping, and as they looked at the woman, they saw cuts on her arms that made her blood run down her skin to her hands before dropping from her fingers into a bucket that collected the blood on the floor.
"Despicable." Silver Oracle hissed and was about to go help the elf when John held her back.
