Global Awakening: Infinite Gift Pack System
Chapter 335: The Poultry GroundsIn the meantime, while Kai was busying himself to obtain more treasures, the Codebreaker Shelter remained busy...
After all, this place still needed more construction even if the wall was already done.
What had once been a forgotten ruin was slowly becoming a thriving hub of survivors, thanks to Kai’s decision to converge all scattered shelters into one unified base.
Maris stretched her arms, feeling the faint ache of muscles that had grown stronger since her days in the Blue Grass Shelter.
Back then, she had been Level 5, barely surviving on scraps and water she could forage.
Now, at Level 9, she had responsibilities and a role that mattered.
[ Name: Maris ]
[ Title: None ]
[ Level: 9 ]
[ Health: 210 / 210 ]
[ Spirit: 120 / 120 ]
[ Physique Rating: D‑ ]
[ Active Skills: None]
[ Passive Skills: Forager’s Instinct Lv2, Gentle Touch Lv1 ]
[ Forager’s Instinct (Level 2): Improves ability to identify edible plants and safe water sources. Increases efficiency when gathering food by 15%. ]
[ Gentle Touch (Level 1): Animals under care respond positively, reducing stress and improving yield. ]
With these two passive skills, she was easily assigned to be one of the caretakers of their poultry!
Indeed, at this time, Maris’ destination was the poultry grounds.
The trade with Harper in the Auction Realm had been a turning point.
Eighty hens and ten roosters had been secured, a treasure beyond measure in this world.
Eggs meant food, barter, and even the possibility of raising more chickens for long‑term sustainability.
Maris nodded at one of the carers assigned to the flock as he had already finished his shift.
Well, aside from collecting eggs, they had to always keep this place clean, ensure the chicken’s good health, and also, they had to guard this place just in case someone tried to steal the eggs or even capture the chicken to be cooked.
For now, she entered the poultry shed, a structure patched together from scavenged wood, corrugated metal, with simple fencing.
The place was filled with the soft clucking of hens, the occasional crow of a rooster, and the earthy smell of straw.
"Morning, girls," Maris said softly with her voice carrying warmth.
The hens responded with gentle clucks, moving toward her as if recognizing her presence.
Her passive skill, Gentle Touch, had begun to manifest in subtle ways.
The animals were calmer around her, less prone to stress, and more consistent in their egg production.
She checked the feeding troughs first. Grain had been rationed carefully, mixed with scraps from the shelter’s kitchens. Water was stored in clay basins, purified daily.
Maris crouched, inspecting the hens one by one.
She looked for signs of illness... drooping wings, dull feathers, sluggish movement.
Her Forager’s Instinct helped her identify natural remedies, herbs she could mix into their feed to keep them healthy.
Satisfied, she moved to the nesting boxes.
Eggs gleamed faintly in the straw. She counted carefully, placing each one into a basket lined with cloth.
Apparently, the previous carer focused more on cleaning the place and feeding the chickens instead of collecting eggs.
"One... two... three..." she whispered as she counted the eggs while collecting them.
By the time she finished, she had collected nearly sixty eggs. It was a good yield.
Her work didn’t end there.
Maris carried the basket to the storage room, where eggs were sorted.
Most of them were kept for food... But a few were set aside for incubation.
Apparently, the Codebreakers Shelter had begun experimenting with hatching chicks, hoping to expand the flock further.
Maris then recorded the numbers on a ledger...
Since Kai had insisted on proper tracking of resources, she just had to follow instructions since every egg mattered.
After the collection, Maris returned to the poultry grounds to clean.
She thought of replacing the old straw, but they seemed fine for now, so instead of that, she scrubbed the basins and repaired a section of fencing that had been weakened by last night’s rain.
When everything was done, she wiped sweat from her brow, smiling faintly.
’It’s hard work... but it feels good to be useful.’
By midday, she joined the others for a brief meal.
There was Randel, who was now assigned to construction, Emiru, who was still helping with farming, and Leron, who was now part of the patrol squad.
The four of them were close friends in Blue Grass Shelter before and it didn’t stop after entering this new shelter.
Soon, they sat on overturned crates, eating boiled eggs and bread.
"We’re already building the fourth watchtower... It’s really cool. You should try climbing it later." Randel remarked.
"Ohhh... But it’s still quite scary... What if you get sniped by the Spyders?"
"Heh... The barrier we have isn’t just for display, noh?"
Leron and Maris said as they looked at each other.
"Wait... Did you know what we’ve planted right now? Corn! Corn! Someday, we will have corn in the shelter! I heard it was purchased from the Auction. It was when the Foreign Survivors disappeared."
That was definitely good news!
Just like that, the friends discussed some updates or various random information within the shelter, including the mysterious Super Soldiers who were helping in the construction and also security.
After lunch, Maris checked the incubators.
They were crude... wooden boxes lined with cloth, warmed by several lamps.
Inside, a dozen eggs rested, their shells faintly glowing from the light...
She then adjusted the lamps, ensuring the temperature remained stable.
Her Gentle Touch skill seemed to extend here too. The chicks inside seemed to develop steadily. In any case, their survival rate was higher than expected.
Then, the afternoon was spent repairing the shed roof. Rain had leaked through, dampening the straw. Maris climbed carefully, hammering scavenged planks into place.
By evening, the poultry grounds were secure again.
As the sun set, Maris carried the final basket of eggs to the shelter’s kitchen. The cooks greeted her warmly, their eyes lighting up at the sight.
"It’s finally here..." one of the cooks exclaimed as Maris set down the basket of eggs.
Mila, the chef, stepped forward with excitement.
In her hands was a small pouch wrapped carefully in cloth.
"This," she said, unwrapping it, "was brought back by Ralph’s hunting team. They found it clinging to the cliffs... It’s rare... very rare."
Inside was a cluster of delicate strands. They were translucent and slightly sticky.
Maris tilted her head. "What is it?"
"Swiftlet’s nest," Mila explained. "The hardened saliva of a bird... and this one’s quite special."
