Claire immediately raised her hand, signaling the other two to stop.
Ralph lowered his rifle slightly, while Amer looked around in confusion.
"What is it?" Amer asked quietly.
Claire didn’t answer immediately.
Her eyes were fixed on the interior of the abandoned shelter.
The place had clearly been looted before. Broken furniture was scattered everywhere, cabinets and doors had been smashed open, and most of the easily accessible supplies had already disappeared. At first glance, it looked like there was nothing left worth taking.
However, Claire wasn’t looking at any of those things.
Instead, she was looking at something only she could see... It was the Spirit tied to her talent, Fifth Sin...
Its form constantly shifted like flowing smoke, yet its outline somehow resembled a man draped in an elegant robe...
The spirit slowly drifted toward the back of the room before stopping beside a cracked concrete wall.
"There."
The voice echoed directly inside Claire’s mind.
"So you found something again."
The invisible spirit didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, one translucent hand reached toward the wall.
"Wealth does not disappear. It merely waits for someone worthy to claim it."
Claire had heard those words countless times already.
Ever since awakening the Fifth Sin Talent, the mysterious spirit had always been beside her.
Neither Kai nor Mei could see it...
As far as everyone else was concerned, Claire occasionally spoke to herself for no apparent reason.
Only Claire knew that the spirit truly existed.
She walked toward the damaged wall before knocking on it lightly with her knuckles.
"...Hollow."
Ralph immediately understood.
"You think there’s something behind it?"
"I know there is."
Without wasting another second, Ralph retrieved a heavy pry bar from his backpack while Amer hurried over to help.
It took several minutes of careful work before a section of the cracked concrete finally gave way.
Behind it was a small maintenance room.
Apparently, whoever had abandoned the shelter had deliberately concealed the entrance before leaving.
Amer’s eyes widened.
"There really was a hidden room..."
Unlike the looted offices outside, this room remained almost untouched.
Metal shelves lined the walls from top to bottom.
Several sealed crates were stacked neatly in one corner, while dozens of waterproof containers remained unopened despite the passage of time.
Ralph immediately walked toward the nearest crate before carefully opening it.
His eyebrows rose as he saw the contents.
"...Generator parts."
With that said, he continued, the second crate contained industrial batteries.
The third was filled with electrical wiring, precision tools, replacement circuits, and various electronic components.
Amer stared blankly at everything in front of him.
"These... these are worth a fortune."
Claire slowly nodded.
Many people would overlook supplies like these because they weren’t immediately useful for combat.
However, rebuilding civilization required far more than food and weapons.
Shelters needed electricity... Other water purification systems needed replacement parts.
Defensive walls required machinery to maintain.
Every single crate inside this room represented resources that would become increasingly valuable as time passed.
Meanwhile, the spirit floated silently between the shelves.
Its movements became noticeably more graceful than before.
"Claim them."
Claire couldn’t help but smile.
"I know... But we can’t take them all, okay?"
The spirit’s soft laughter echoed inside her mind but it didn’t speak anymore.
So, Claire knew that it was already fine.
The moment she placed her hand on the nearest crate, a faint golden light spread across its surface.
The entire container disappeared without warning.
Amer blinked several times.
"...Where did it go?"
Another crate vanished... then another.
One after another, half of the valuable resource inside the hidden room disappeared into thin air.
Amer looked completely dumbfounded.
"I... I know you have a storage ability, but seeing it happen is still unbelievable."
Claire merely smiled without offering an explanation.
"Alright... I’ll be taking them all for now but I’ll take the half with me. In any case, I didn’t take any of the cores we’ve looted so far."
’And... It’s not really a storage ability.’
Claire added in her mind as she knew what was truly happening.
None of those supplies were actually inside her own storage.
They had all been entrusted to the spirit.
It was somewhere within an enormous dimensional vault that only the mysterious entity could access, countless treasures had already begun piling up.
Every resource she claimed expanded that hidden domain.
And as its wealth increased... so did the spirit’s power.
Claire felt a familiar warmth spread throughout her body.
Spirit Energy circulated through her meridians more smoothly than before, while her physical strength increased ever so slightly.
It wasn’t a dramatic transformation.
The improvement was subtle.
But she had experienced it enough times to recognize it immediately.
Well, the richer the spirit became... the stronger she became as well.
Claire looked at the invisible figure with curiosity.
"You really are Greed..."
The spirit remained silent for several seconds.
Then another quiet laugh echoed inside her mind.
"Names are merely labels created by mortals. Call me whatever you wish. As long as you continue gathering wealth... I shall continue making you stronger."
Claire shook her head helplessly before turning toward Ralph and Amer.
"Let’s continue searching."
She glanced once more at the now-empty storage room before smiling to herself.
If even one forgotten shelter could hide resources like these...
Then perhaps the wasteland still contained far more treasures than anyone had imagined.
***
The three of them continued searching through the abandoned shelter, moving deeper into the ruined buildings as they checked each room for anything that might still be useful.
After discovering the hidden maintenance room, their expectations had increased considerably. If one of the most obvious areas had been hiding such valuable resources, there was always a chance that other supplies had been overlooked as well.
Amer, in particular, had become much more enthusiastic.
He carefully searched through overturned cabinets and opened drawers that hadn’t already been completely destroyed, while Ralph checked the larger rooms and storage areas.
Claire moved between them, occasionally stopping whenever the spirit of Greed drew her attention toward something that had escaped the notice of the others.
Unfortunately, most of what they found was either useless or too damaged to be worth taking.
Several old computers had been stripped of their valuable components. A few pieces of machinery had been left behind, but they were so badly damaged that repairing them would likely require more resources than simply finding replacements elsewhere.
They had already been searching for nearly half an hour when Amer suddenly stopped.
His expression changed.
"Wait."
Claire immediately turned toward him.
"What is it?"
Amer didn’t answer.
His eyes slowly moved toward the entrance of the shelter.
A moment later, Ralph also noticed the change in his expression.
"What did you sense?"
"Something."
Amer activated Spirit Sense to its full extent.
His face gradually became more serious.
"There are... things approaching."
Claire’s expression immediately hardened.
"How many?"
"I don’t know yet."
Amer closed his eyes.
The Spirit Energy within his body circulated rapidly as he concentrated, allowing his senses to spread farther than before.
Then his eyes suddenly opened.
"Not far."
Ralph immediately raised his rifle.
"Mutated beasts?"
"No. They’re machines."
Claire’s expression changed.
"Everyone, hide."
There was no hesitation in her voice.
Ralph and Amer instantly followed her instructions.
They moved deeper into the abandoned shelter, quickly searching for a place where they could conceal themselves without exposing their positions. Claire eventually found a partially collapsed section of the building where several concrete walls had fallen over one another, creating a narrow space large enough for the three of them to hide.
They immediately moved behind the rubble.
Claire activated her advanced camouflage gear.
A faint shimmer passed over her body as the equipment adjusted itself to the surrounding environment. The technology was far more sophisticated than anything ordinary survivors could obtain, and it didn’t simply distort their appearance.
It also suppressed their heat signatures.
Ralph and Amer activated their own camouflage equipment as well.
Within moments, the three of them became almost impossible to detect with ordinary sensors.
Claire carefully peeked through a narrow gap between the broken concrete.
She couldn’t see anything yet.
But she could hear them.
A faint mechanical sound gradually grew louder in the distance.
It was the sound of countless metal feet moving across the ground.
Clank. Clank. Clank.
The noise continued approaching, and Amer’s expression became tense.
He instinctively reached toward the jammer attached to his equipment.
Claire immediately grabbed his wrist.
"Don’t."
Amer froze.
"Why?"
"The jammer. If you activate it now, they’ll know something is here."
Amer immediately understood.
The jammer was useful because it could interfere with the detection systems of the A.I. army, but activating it wasn’t something they could do without consequences.
The device required a considerable amount of power to operate.
That meant activating it would create an energy signature.
Under normal circumstances, they could activate the jammer before the enemy arrived and use it to conceal their presence.
But now...
It was already too late.
The enemy was too close.
If they suddenly activated a powerful electronic device in the middle of the A.I. army’s search range, there was a good chance their sensors would immediately notice the disturbance.
However, just as they finished speaking, the massive foot of a Tyrant Mech suddenly landed directly in front of their hiding place!
