The auxiliary cutter hit the outer shelf of the twelve-mile reef with a hard, vibrating shudder that made the metal panels inside the wheelhouse groan. The water here wasn’t the thick, oily brown of the river channels; it was a dark, ink-black color that churned into white foam whenever the swell smashed against the jagged coral ridges rising out of the mist.

Jun-ho stood on the small forward deck, his large rubber boots planted two feet apart against the non-slip fiberglass. He didn’t use the safety rail. He held The Ash Remnant low in his left hand, the blunt matte-black wedge absorbing the salt spray without leaving a single wet mark on the metal.

Beside his elbow, the wheelhouse door was jammed open with a piece of old timber. Eun-bi was crouching over the secure console, her canvas bag unzipped on the deck plates between her shins. The green light from the cast a sharp, geometric shadow across her cheeks, highlighting the hard line of her jaw as she flicked through the encrypted transit logs.

"The radar signature just changed," she called out over the dull, heavy roar of the surf. She didn’t look up from the screen, her bare fingers adjustments the manual tracking dial on the console frame. "The Sun God supply ship—the Gull Vanguard—is sitting less than half a mile ahead, right in the lee of the first black cliff. They’re running a low-frequency sonar pulse to check the coral line before they drop their extraction anchors."

Jun-ho shifted his gaze through the yellow mist. The cliff was visible now, a massive wall of volcanic rock that rose straight out of the ink-black water like a broken tooth. At the base of the stone, half-hidden behind a cluster of rusty storage containers and old fishing nets, sat a low wooden pier anchored to the rock face—the hidden refueling station. A single oil lamp hung from a curved iron bracket over the slipway, its light flickering weakly against the grey fog.

"The pier belongs to the unranked runners," Jun-ho said, his voice quiet. "The ship is using their fuel."

"They’re taking it by force, Jun-ho," Eun-bi said, climbing out of the wheelhouse with her canvas bag slung over her gray flannel shirt. She had her trauma scissors clutched loose in her hand, her eyes wide as she looked at the massive black hull of the guild ship looming through the fog ahead. "The Sun God second line detail has forty enforcers on that deck. They’ve already locked the pier operator inside his own tool shed. If we try to land our cutter at the slipway, their deck mages will see our transponder signature before we can even clear the reef line."

Jun-ho looked down at the corner of his eye, where the solid ink-black numbers were waiting.

"The transponder is already running their frequency," Jun-ho said. "We don’t need to land at the pier. We board the hull from the blind side."

He didn’t wait for her to answer. He stepped over the low bow rail, his boots hitting the dark fiberglass snout of the cutter as he let the vast, frozen pool of mana behind his ribs break its banks completely.

Whoosh.

A sudden, circular wave of fine grey frost blew outward from his soles, turning the churning salt spray into a solid, white sheet of ice that locked the cutter’s bow directly against the side of the massive guild ship’s hull. The air inside the ten-meter circle dropped twenty degrees in a microsecond, the heavy diesel exhaust from the Gull Vanguard’s smoke stacks turning into a thick, frozen mist that fell to the deck like grey sand.

The world inside the ten-meter perimeter slowed down until the heavy black swells hitting the steel plates looked like slow, lazy rolls of gray oil.

Jun-ho didn’t use a ladder. He grabbed the edge of a rusty cargo port in the ship’s side with his left hand, his high strength stat pulling his seventy-kilogram frame up the vertical steel wall as if he were walking up a regular staircase. Eun-bi followed right behind his shoulder, her boots clicking carefully against the frozen rivets as she kept her head lamp turned off to hide their approach.

They burst onto the main cargo deck behind a stack of blue supply crates.

The deck wasn’t empty. Four Sun God enforcers in heavy grey steel plate armor were standing near the main hatch, their short crossbows primed with glowing blue mana bolts. But because they were inside the Ashen Domain, their primitive reflexes were stripped of half their speed. They turned their helmets toward the frost on the rail like they were moving through heavy syrup.

"Rogue—" the first enforcer tried to shout, his hand reaching for his alarm stone.

Jun-ho didn’t let him finish the syllable. He swung the flat side of The Ash Remnant in a short, clean line, using just his wrist. Because of the soul-bound trait, the black wedge carried a hundred-fold weight calculation upon impact. The flat iron blade hit the man’s grey steel breastplate flush in the center.

The sound inside the foggy deck was massive, a localized thunderclap that shattered the steel plate into thousands of tiny iron shards. The force of the strike didn’t just break the leader; the shockwave blew all four enforcers backward into the heavy metal cargo hatch, their iron maces flying out of their hands and spinning across the wet deck plates.

The main cabin door flew open, and a tall man in white alloy armor—the Second Line Commander—stepped onto the deck, his hand already drawing a long silver staff that glowed with a heavy, active purple lightning spell.

"Who’s breaking the line?!" the Commander shouted, his face turning an ugly shade of shock as he looked at the four shattered breastplates in the mud. He raised his staff, aiming the lightning straight at Jun-ho’s chest. "Mages! Seal the deck!"

Jun-ho didn’t move an inch backward. He reached into his left pocket, his fingers closing around the cold brass watch of the Paradox Dial.

"No," Jun-ho said, his voice carrying a deep, quiet resonance that made the diesel tanks beneath their feet vibrate.

He pressed the small brass button down.

A heavy, metallic click echoed through the cargo deck, and instantly, the purple lightning spinning around the Commander’s staff died out completely, turning into a dull, dead rod of gray wood.

The active skill lines inside his own vision turned a solid, locked gray color for sixty seconds, leaving the entire front line completely helpless in the middle of the open sea.

From behind the blue supply crates, Eun-bi walked out three paces, her heavy canvas bag slung over her arm as her trauma scissors glinted faintly in the gray light. She looked at the Commander trying to shake his dark staff, a dry, sharp smile pulling at the corner of her lips.

"The transponder frequency was a perfect match, Commander," she called out over the hum of the dead props, her voice dropping into that flat, bored public-sector drawl. "But your security log has a massive hole in the front line."

Jun-ho raised the black iron wedge, the tip pointing straight at the Commander’s gray helmet as the silent gray boxes at the bottom of his eye began to map out his first official Breakthrough Trial inside the sealed island gates.
