The steel hatch leading down to the ship’s lower deck plates didn’t have a modern electronic digital keypad. It was locked with a three-bracket manual wheel made of unpolished marine brass, its casing sealed with a thick layer of blue guild wax to prevent low-tier crew members from looking inside.

Jun-ho kept the tip of The Ash Remnant resting light against the Second Line Commander’s throat armor. The cold frost from the Ashen Domain was still thick on the man’s white alloy visor, turning his frantic breath into frozen white crystals right over his mouth vent.

"Turn the wheel," Jun-ho said, his voice quiet and dry over the sound of the diesel fumes.

The Commander’s hands were shaking so hard his silver gloves clinked against the brass brackets. His active skill lines were still frozen into solid gray boxes by the pocket watch in Jun-ho’s pocket, leaving him with nothing but his raw, unbuffed physical strength. He threw his weight against the iron wheel, the blue guild wax cracking open and dropping to the deck like dried blue chips.

The three internal deadbolts slid back with a heavy, hollow scrape, and the iron door swung inward, exposing a narrow concrete stairway that went straight down into the belly of the vessel. The air coming out of the hole didn’t smell like ocean brine or engine grease; it smelled of dry chemicals, sterile alcohol, and the sharp, freezing tang of concentrated primal mana.

"Get down there," Jun-ho said, shoving the big man forward with a single flick of his left wrist.

The Commander stumbled down the first four stone steps, his heavy white boots making a loud clatter against the iron treads before he hit the bottom floor. Jun-ho walked right behind him, his large rubber boots making no sound at all in the dark.

Eun-bi came down last, her canvas bag slung tight across her gray flannel shirt. She had her electric headlamp switched to its lowest yellow setting, the beam cutting a thin line through the glass-walled laboratory stalls that filled the lower deck.

The room inside looked like a high-end research clinic from the central district, completely out of place inside an old cargo hull. There were three stainless steel prep tables covered in plastic tubes, a row of chemical filters, and a massive, square safe built straight into the ship’s iron keel plates.

Inside a reinforced glass container in the center of the safe sat the prize—the Primal Growth Catalyst. It was a thick, fist-sized crystal that didn’t pulse with red or blue light; it was a solid, deep ash-gray color, with hundreds of tiny white threads shifting slowly inside the mineral like trapped lightning.

"You can’t touch that stone, rookie," the Commander hissed, his back pressed against the iron safe frame as his visor finally cleared of frost. The sixty-second skill lock was down to five seconds, the gray lines in his eyes beginning to flash with blue light again.

"That seed was pulled from the third sealed island gate last winter. The regional director spent three months paying off the ministry auditors just to keep the collection log off the public database. If you break the glass, the guild’s main extraction detail will hunt you down to the southern mudflats before sunset."

Jun-ho didn’t look at him. He walked up to the safe, raised his left hand, and brought the blunt butt of The Ash Remnant’s handle straight down onto the reinforced glass pane.

The glass didn’t just crack; it shattered into thousands of tiny white pieces that rained down into the safe box. Jun-ho reached his bare hand into the pile, his fingers closing around the cold ash-gray crystal.

The moment his skin touched the mineral, the system text boxes exploded across his vision in clean, solid gray characters that only he could see.

[Applying 100x Multiplier to Class Evolution...]

A sudden, terrifying rush of icy energy shot out of the stone and straight up his bare arm, hitting his chest like a physical cannonball. It didn’t burn his veins; it turned his entire internal lake of mana into a solid, frozen sheet of ice, the coldness so intense his breath turned to frost in the small room.

Jun-ho’s jaw locked tight, his muscles tightening until his boots left deep, split cracks in the iron deck plates beneath his soles.

The Commander saw the change, his blue eye flaring with an ugly, greedy light as his skill lines finally turned back into active purple current. "His line is choking on the mana! Front line! Secure the room! Break his arms now!"

Three enforcers burst down the concrete stairs, their heavy iron clubs raised to crush Jun-ho’s ribs while he was frozen by the stone.

But before they could take their first step across the linoleum floor, Eun-bi stepped right into the center of the aisle, her sharp face hard under her yellow hood. She didn’t use a shield. She jammed her ministry registration key straight into the laboratory’s emergency chemical fire panel on the wall, turning the plastic handle all the way to the stop pin.

A massive cloud of thick white suppression foam shot out from the ceiling vents, completely blinding the entry path and turning the narrow corridor into a white wall of chemical dust that made the enforcers cough violently under their visors.

"I told you your security log had a hole in it, pal," Eun-bi called out through the white cloud, her voice carrying that regular, flat public-sector drawl as she backed toward Jun-ho’s side, her shears clutched tight in her hand. "The maintenance logs down here are completely broken."

Jun-ho kept his eyes closed, his teeth grinding against the ice inside his chest as the gray numbers in his sight began to count down the final seconds of his evolution past Level 10.
