They walked for the better part of an hour before the jungle finally started thinning out.

The trees grew shorter here, gnarled and blackened at the roots, like something had scorched this whole stretch of ground a long time ago and the forest had never quite recovered. Ash drifted faintly through the air, settling softly on Logan’s shoulders, on Alice’s hair, on the leaves of everything still trying to grow in soil that clearly didn’t want it anymore.

"Getting close to something." Alice kept her voice low, scanning the treeline with Starlit Vigil’s own quiet hum working steadily in the background.

Logan felt it too, a pressure building somewhere at the edge of his own senses, the particular weight of a lot of people gathered in one place.

They crested a low ridge twenty minutes later, and the stronghold came into view all at once.

It sat at the exact center of the island, a fortress built from black stone and iron, walls rising three stories high and wrapping around a courtyard large enough to hold a small town. Watchtowers stood at each corner, banners the color of dried blood hanging limp in air that had gone still and heavy the closer they got. Smoke rose from a dozen different points inside the walls, cookfires and forges both, the sound of hammers and boots and distant shouting carrying faintly across the scorched ground between them and the gate.

"That’s a lot of people." Alice’s eyes narrowed, doing rough math. "More than a hundred, easily."

```
[ Stronghold detected: Ashen Reach. Warlord presence confirmed. ]
```

Logan scanned the courtyard properly before committing to anything.

```
[ Ashen Reach Garrison ]
Level 40. Talents and Skills ranging from Normal-rank to Legendary-rank.
```

His own jaw tightened. "These aren’t fodder."

"No." Alice’s grin sharpened instead of fading. "Good."

They didn’t bother with subtlety anyway.

---

The outer wall’s guards spotted them the moment they broke cover, horns blaring somewhere deep inside the fortress before either of them had covered half the open ground toward the gate.

Alice answered the alarm with an arrow through the nearest watchtower’s own archer, gold fire following the shot in and clearing the platform in the same breath.

Solveig’s clones hit the gate itself, four blades against iron hinges built to withstand exactly this kind of assault. The hinges held for three full seconds before finally giving way.

Soldiers poured out to meet them, dozens at once, and these ones knew how to fight.

A spear thrust caught Logan’s own shoulder before he managed to clear it, real pain flaring through muscle that Mythic-rank armor should have blunted more than it did. He answered with Overgrim Slash, the dark arc sweeping a full line off their feet, but three more closed the gap before he’d fully recovered his own footing.

Alice found the same resistance on her own side, one soldier’s Legendary-rank shield skill catching Starpiercer Volley clean, the arrows shattering against it instead of punching through.

The courtyard fight dragged on longer than either of them expected, soldier after soldier proving genuinely capable, forcing real effort out of every kill rather than the effortless sweep Logan had half hoped for.

Two figures broke from the garrison’s own ranks partway through, cutting a path straight toward Logan and Alice with clear intent.

```
[ Commander Voss Ironmark ]
Talent: Bulwark’s Resolve (Legendary)
```

```
[ Commander Reyna Duskfire ]
Talent: Cinderstorm Wrath (Legendary)
```

Voss met Logan head-on, a tower shield absorbing Overgrim Slash without so much as a crack forming across its surface.

"Nice trick." Logan reset his own stance, genuinely impressed despite himself.

"Not a trick. A wall." Voss’s own voice came steady behind the shield. "Walls don’t fall to one good swing."

Severed Step!

The cut found his footing instead of the shield, and Voss staggered for the first time in the fight, balance failing even as the shield itself stayed perfectly intact.

Grim Devouring Slash!

The ethereal edge halved whatever defensive strength the shield still carried, and Overgrim Slash finished what the first strike had started, Voss going down hard against the scorched stone.

Reyna proved a harder problem for Alice, cinders swirling thick around her the instant their fight began, each one a small, biting burn that stacked faster than Alice could clear them off her own skin.

"Annoying." Alice gritted through it, Comet Step carrying her clear of the worst of the swarm.

Radiant Snare!

The cage of light caught Reyna mid-cast, rooting her in place a half second before Horizon’s Requiem finished charging.

Horizon’s Requiem!

The shot ended it outright, starlight burning through cinder and flesh alike.

```
[ You have eliminated Commander Voss Ironmark. ]
[ You have eliminated Commander Reyna Duskfire. ]
```

"Nice. We are racking in a good amount of Tower Points."

The rest of the garrison broke shortly after, whatever cohesion the two commanders had been holding together finally giving way entirely. Solveig’s clones mopped up what remained, and the courtyard emptied at last, littered with everything both sides had left behind.

---

The Warlord waited for them at the far end of it, seated on a throne carved from the same black stone as the walls, flames curling low and constant around both his own hands.

He rose as they approached, tall and broad-shouldered, a jaw set hard enough to crack stone, dressed in armor scorched black from what had to be years of use.

```
[ Warlord Kaidros Vane, the Ashen Reach ]
Class: Emberthrone Conqueror (Mythic)
```

"Not many make it this far." His voice carried across the courtyard, easy, rough, and low. "Fewer still make it past me."

"We’ll be the exception." Logan didn’t slow his approach at all.

Kaidros grinned, and the flame around both his hands surged brighter.

Emberthrone Wrath!

A wave of fire tore across the courtyard floor, and Logan barely cleared it with Reaper’s Stride, the heat close enough to singe the edges of his own sleeves.

Alice answered from range, three arrows converging on Kaidros from three separate angles.

He caught all three on a shield of solid flame, the arrows disintegrating before they reached him at all.

"Cute." Kaidros closed the distance himself, faster than his own size had any right to allow, a greatsword wreathed in fire meeting Grimlord’s Blade in a clash that rang out across the whole courtyard.

The impact staggered Logan back a full step.

Severed Step!

The cut found Kaidros’s own footing, but the Warlord simply planted himself deeper, flame anchoring his boots to the stone floor beneath him like roots.

"Nice try." Kaidros swung again, and Logan barely caught it on Blade Veil Counter, the damage boost threading straight into his own follow-up.

Overgrim Slash!

The dark arc caught Kaidros across the chest, real damage this time, flame guttering along the wound before sealing itself shut a moment later.

The fight dragged on, minutes bleeding together in a constant exchange of fire and steel, Alice peppering Kaidros with arrows whenever his attention shifted fully toward Logan, Logan closing the gap whenever Kaidros tried to put distance between himself and Alice’s own bow.

Solveig’s clones joined the fight properly a few minutes in, four blades converging on Kaidros from every angle at once, forcing him to actually split his own attention for the first time in the fight.

That was the opening they needed.

Grim Devouring Slash!

The ethereal edge halved whatever defensive flame Kaidros still had running, and Overgrim Slash followed through the gap it left behind, catching him square in the chest with everything Logan had left to give.

Kaidros staggered. Then dropped.

```
[ Warlord Kaidros Vane: Phase 1 defeated. ]
```

---

For one long second, nothing happened at all.

Then the body on the ground began to change.

Flame poured out from every wound at once, not spilling free but sinking back inward, the Warlord’s own form swelling and darkening as it absorbed everything that should have killed him instead.

He rose again a moment later, taller now, armor fused directly into blackened skin, eyes burning pure orange where human eyes had been a moment before.

```
[ Warlord Kaidros Vane, the Ashen Reach: Phase 2 - Emberthrone Ruin ]
```

"That’s new." Alice’s grin had gone sharp and wary in equal measure.

Kaidros didn’t speak this time. Whatever had been left of the man wearing that armor seemed mostly gone now, replaced by something that simply wanted to burn.

He moved fast, faster than Phase One had ever managed, flame trailing behind every step in a wake that scorched the stone floor black.

Logan barely got Blade Veil Counter up in time to answer the first strike, the impact alone hard enough to crack the ground beneath his own feet.

Alice’s arrows found him constantly now, and constantly did less than they had before, flame regenerating each wound almost as fast as it opened.

"He’s healing through everything." Alice’s voice had gone tight. "We need to hit harder, faster, or find whatever’s actually feeding that regeneration."

Logan’s own eyes caught it a moment later, a core of pure white flame burning steady at the center of Kaidros’s own chest, distinct from everything else, feeding the rest.

’There.’

Reaper’s Stride!

He blinked in close, Sword Intent flaring properly this time, giving him a clean read on exactly where that white core connected to everything holding this monster together.

Severance of Heaven’s own philosophy settled into his hands.

What was holding this thing together? Then cut it.

Overgrim Slash!

The dark arc tore straight through the white core at the center of Kaidros’s chest, and every flame on his whole body guttered out in the same instant, regeneration collapsing along with the source feeding it.

Kaidros staggered, monstrous form already unraveling at the edges.

Solveig’s clones converged for the finish, four blades landing in the same breath, and this time nothing rose back up off the ground.

```
Alice let out a long breath, lowering her bow.
"Well." She looked at the scorched courtyard around them, smoke still curling off the black stone throne. "That was fun."
Logan managed a tired grin of his own, sheathing Grimlord’s Blade.
"Let’s find the next one."
