Chapter 156: Chapter 156: Bait
Their team numbered forty men, but a quick observation revealed they were divided into two distinct groups.
The first group was the Blood Saber Gang’s core members. Their equipment was better and their aura was clearly more formidable.
The second group consisted of the gang’s outer members. Their organization and discipline were noticeably laxer compared to the core members, and they were also responsible for the more dangerous tasks.
Zhou Mei’s targets weren’t the core members, but the outer ones. Although these outer members’ combat strength was inferior to that of the core members, they still numbered over twenty. Gathered together, they were a force to be reckoned with.
Eliminating them first would significantly lighten the burden in the eventual head-on confrontation.
With a scornful smirk, Zhou Mei’s figure once again melted into the darkness. She approached the outer members as silently as a ghost.
Her movements were swift and decisive. Every strike landed flawlessly on a vital point, quickly reaping the lives of her enemies.
The Blood Saber Gang’s outer members grew uneasy, never knowing when the threat lurking in the shadows would descend upon them.
This fear began to spread among them, causing their vigilance to drop significantly.
Bena and the other team members were also observing the Blood Saber Gang’s movements from the shadows. They used the complex terrain and the cover of night to find the perfect moment to strike.
Bena knew they wouldn’t have the upper hand in a direct confrontation, but through ambushes and surprise attacks, they could gradually wear down the enemy’s strength.
Meanwhile, Blood Saber was loudly boosting morale within his ranks, trying to get his men to shake off their fear.
He knew very well that if this fear continued to spread, they would be unable to carry out their mission effectively.
"Don’t panic!" Blood Saber shouted.
"The Blood Saber Gang has been through hell and back! You think these cheap tricks are enough to scare us off?
All of you, pull yourselves together! Find those skulking rats and show them what we’re made of!"
Hearing Blood Saber’s words, the fear in his men’s hearts was gradually replaced by anger.
They began to search every possible hiding spot more carefully, trying to flush out the enemy hidden in the darkness.
However, Zhou Mei was extremely cautious. After each attack, she would quickly change her position to avoid being discovered.
This made the Blood Saber Gang’s search exceptionally difficult.
The battle continued in the dead of night, with both sides leveraging their advantages against each other.
Like a panther hiding in the dark, Zhou Mei continuously chipped away at the Blood Saber Gang’s strength, while Blood Saber worked to adjust his tactics, trying to turn the tide.
As time passed, the Blood Saber Gang’s numbers gradually dwindled. Bena and his team were waiting for a decisive opportunity to crush the gang’s remaining forces in one fell swoop.
"Boss, we can’t go on like this."
A core member walked up to Blood Saber and said in a low voice, "The enemy is clearly skilled at these guerrilla tactics. We’re losing men."
Blood Saber clenched his fists. He knew the man was right, but he also knew that if they retreated now, all their previous efforts would be for nothing.
He had to find a way to deal with this unseen enemy.
"We have to change our strategy," Blood Saber said grimly.
"From now on, our core members will disperse among the smaller groups to strengthen command and control. The outer members need to stick closer together. No one gets left behind."
He glanced around at the tense faces of his men and continued:
"I know you’re all scared, but remember, we’re the Blood Saber Gang. We don’t go down easy.
As long as we stick together, we will find these cowards hiding in the shadows and wipe them all out!"
Blood Saber’s orders were quickly relayed, and the Blood Saber Gang began to regroup. The core members spread out among the smaller teams, reinforcing command and protection over the outer members.
This way, although they still couldn’t completely prevent the enemy’s sneak attacks, they could at least reduce their losses and improve their overall defense.
Meanwhile, Bena and his team were also watching the Blood Saber Gang’s movements from the darkness.
They noticed the change in the gang’s formation and knew the enemy had caught on to their tactics and was starting to adapt.
"Looks like the Blood Saber Gang reacted faster than we expected."
Bena said quietly, a hint of admiration in his eyes. "But it’s going to take more than that to stop us."
He turned to Zhou Mei.
"Zhou Mei, you need to be careful from now on. The Blood Saber Gang’s core members are all experienced Warriors. They won’t be such easy targets."
Zhou Mei nodded. "Don’t worry, I’ll be careful. As long as they’re spread out, I’ll find my opening."
Bena then turned to the other members of his team.
"Listen up, everyone. The Blood Saber Gang has started to adjust their tactics, and we can’t just sit back and wait.
From here on out, we need to be more flexible. Use the terrain and the darkness to keep wearing them down."
His gaze swept across each of his teammates’ faces before he spoke with determination:
"Remember, our goal is to weaken the enemy as much as possible and prepare for the final assault. As long as we can hold on, victory will be ours."
The back-and-forth war of attrition lasted for a full three hours. The Blood Saber Gang’s numbers plummeted from over 40 to just over 20.
「The sky had grown completely dark.」
Zhou Mei, already in her bestial state, saw another man stray a bit too far from the main group. A cold, murderous glint flashed in her eyes.
The green dagger in her hand was just about to slice across the man’s neck.
However, just as she extended her dagger...
...the man, as if anticipating her move, shot his hands out like lightning and grabbed her outstretched right arm.
Startled, Zhou Mei immediately stabbed her other dagger toward the man’s arm.
Blood spurted out instantly, but the man didn’t let go. Instead, his grip tightened.
"Boss!"
A savage look flashed in Blood Saber’s eyes. At some point, the throwing knives in his hand had become coated in a layer of blood-red light.
"Nowhere to run! Die!!!"
It was obviously a trap.
The outer members who had been continuously picked off by Zhou Mei were just bait, their purpose solely to lure her into this very trap.
Blood Saber had, of course, long since figured out Zhou Mei’s methods, so he had painstakingly devised this plan.
An intense killing intent flared in Zhou Mei’s cat-like eyes. Her fingernails instantly elongated, becoming ten sharp blades.
The man holding her arms let out a blood-curdling scream as both of his arms were severed at once.
Though her reaction was swift, several blood-red throwing knives were already streaking through the air toward her at an equally breakneck speed. In the blink of an eye, they were right in front of her.
