Chapter 174: Identity Card

Chapter 174: Chapter 174: Identity Card

Zhou Mei motioned for Zhou Yiming to get the identity card. She kept her dagger pressed against Lin Hao’s throat in case he tried any tricks.

Zhou Yiming walked to the table, found the card Lin Hao had mentioned, and brought it over to Zhou Mei.

Zhou Mei took the card and inspected it carefully. It was well-made, with the Academy’s insignia and some encrypted information on it. It didn’t look like a fake.

However, when Bena, who was standing nearby, saw this so-called Academy identity card, a sneer appeared on his face.

In the wasteland, 99.9% of people had surely never seen a real Academy identity card. Based on its fine craftsmanship alone, this card was certainly convincing enough to fool the vast majority of people.

However, Bena just so happened to be in the remaining 0.1% of people who had.

Xisuo and Simon had given them a real Academy identity card before.

Bena took the so-called student identity card and gently scratched it with his fingernail.

The next moment, he let out a snort of laughter.

The seemingly exquisite design on it had actually been scraped off by his nail.

Lin Hao had no idea what Bena was laughing about, and his face grew even more tense.

"I really am from the Academy. If you kill me, you’ll definitely face retaliation from them."

"What do you need? I can give you anything I have."

An idea sparked in Bena’s mind. He decided not to expose the man’s identity just yet.

In fact, this imposter had piqued his interest.

"You say you’re from the Academy. Then what are you doing here?" Bena asked in a low voice.

Lin Hao hesitated, seemingly weighing how to answer.

"I... I’m conducting some research," Lin Hao stammered.

"Research? What are you researching?" Bena pressed.

Lin Hao’s eyes darted around, as if he didn’t want to reveal too much information.

"I... I’m researching mutated creatures," Lin Hao said in a low voice.

"Didn’t you always claim to the public that you were controlling these animals with your special abilities?"

Lin Hao’s eyes grew even more frantic.

Just as he was trying to figure out how to respond to that question, his expression changed drastically.

Because Neil, who was beside them, had already picked up the black helmet from the table.

Neil said,

"Captain Bena, this should be the C20 chip controller. It looks almost identical to the D14 chip controller, just with a slightly more complex structure."

Hearing this, Lin Hao immediately understood why the mutated creatures he had positioned in the area hadn’t warned him in time.

’So they have a D14 chip controller. That explains everything.’

Lin Hao’s heart sank. He knew his situation had just gotten much worse.

If they had a D14 chip controller, not only would the mutated creatures he’d set up be no threat to them, but they could even become an asset to his enemies.

Bena glanced at the black helmet in Neil’s hands and nodded. "Good. Looks like we found what we were looking for."

He turned to Lin Hao, a playful glint in his eyes.

"You claim to be from the Academy, but now I have my doubts.

But that’s alright. I’ll take you to see our administrator and let him determine your true identity."

Lin Hao’s heart tightened when he heard this. He knew that if he fell into their hands, his end would not be a pleasant one.

But before he could say anything, Zhou Mei’s dagger slid lightly across his neck, leaving a bloody line.

"Don’t move, or I’ll spill your blood."

Lin Hao immediately froze. He could feel the killing intent radiating from Zhou Mei and knew she wasn’t joking.

Bena looked at Lin Hao.

"Besides this D14 controller, do you have anything else useful?"

"If you can offer something of sufficient value, I might just let you go."

Lin Hao was tempted by Bena’s words, but he quickly calmed himself.

’If I still have value, I might live a little longer. But if I show them all my cards, it’ll be my death sentence.’

Thinking this, he shook his head and continued with his threats.

"I’m from the Academy. You’d better not try anything stupid."

"My professor and senior classmates all know I’m conducting experiments here. They come to check on the situation periodically."

"If I disappear, or if anything here is touched, they’ll definitely..."

Seeing the imposter still blathering on, Bena rolled his eyes in frustration.

’If the man were really from the Academy, I’d have to be a little worried. But an imposter? Daring to put on airs with a fake ID?’

If this man wasn’t potentially useful, he would have killed him on the spot.

He waved to the others.

"Search this place. Take anything useful."

Seeing Bena’s gesture, Lin Hao’s heart clenched. He knew his secrets might not be safe for much longer. His eyes darted around the factory floor, as if searching for a chance to escape.

Zhou Mei noticed his wandering gaze and sneered.

"I’d advise you not to even think about escaping. We have this place completely under control. You can’t get away."

Lin Hao’s body trembled slightly at her words. He knew there was no way out.

His only hope was that the bargaining chips he held could buy his safety.

Zhou Mei’s dagger never left Lin Hao’s throat. She said coldly,

"You’d better behave, or I’ll make you regret it."

Feeling the cold steel against his throat, Lin Hao could only nod helplessly.

At that moment, Neil and the other team members had already begun searching the factory.

They quickly found some useful supplies and equipment.

Bena tapped Lin Hao’s cheek with the tip of his blade and asked mockingly, "Where did you get all these chemicals and equipment?"

Lin Hao hesitated, but when he saw the dagger in Zhou Mei’s hand, he could only answer, "This is all equipment issued by the Academy and..."

Hearing him still spouting nonsense, Bena finally lost his patience and threw the scratched identity card in front of him.

"This is your last chance to tell the truth. Otherwise, you won’t be seeing tomorrow’s sun."

"Other people might be fooled by your Academy identity, but not us."

"Besides, this identity card is a fake. There’s no way you’re from the Academy."

"So, start talking. Where did this stuff really come from?"

Lin Hao stared at the scratched card on the ground, a wave of despair washing over him.

’My proudest bluff, my fake identity, was seen through so easily?’

’Who are these people? In a backwater place like this, how could someone possibly recognize a fake identity card at a glance?’

Under Bena’s pressure, Lin Hao finally gave up resisting. He knew that if he didn’t tell the truth now, his life would truly be in danger.
