Chapter 193: Chapter 185: Heishui Town
Bena soon noticed that the inhabitants of Heishui Town were different from the residents of other settlements.
Neil had apparently made the same discovery. He quietly leaned in and whispered in Bena’s ear:
"Looks like the radiation levels around here are a bit high. Most people have noticeable radiation splotches on them."
Neil’s words piqued Bena’s interest, and he began to carefully observe the skin of the people around him.
Just as Neil had said, the residents of Heishui Town all had unnatural-looking splotches on their skin to some degree.
These splotches varied in color and shape, but they were clearly the result of radiation exposure.
Bena mused to himself, ’The radiation levels in Heishui Town are higher than I anticipated. This might mean the residents here have better survival skills than people from other places.’
’After all, people who can survive in a radioactive environment are bound to be superior to ordinary people, both in physical constitution and survival skills.’
’But by the same token, excessively high internal radiation levels can cause all sorts of physical and mental problems.’
This made Bena even more hopeful about the recruitment drive. If the people of Heishui Town were truly as he suspected, they could potentially find some exceptional individuals here, as long as they were selective.
However, Bena didn’t rush to post the recruitment notice. Instead, he decided to walk around and get the lay of the land first.
He led his team into the town.
The streets of Heishui Town were narrow, lined with crude wooden huts and tents. The streets bustled with people, giving it a lively air.
Bena noticed that everyone in town carried weapons of some kind and wore wary expressions. Clearly, law and order was not a priority here.
However, Bena wasn’t concerned. He believed that as long as they were careful, they shouldn’t run into any major trouble.
They walked around town for a while, and Bena found that, aside from the radiation splotches, the people of Heishui Town weren’t all that different from residents of other settlements.
The town had its share of shops and taverns, but compared to October Town, there were far more of them here, and the variety and quantity of goods were noticeably greater.
After making a circuit of the town, Bena decided their first move should be to find a tavern, post the recruitment notice, and see if they could attract anyone willing to join their shelter.
They found a relatively large-looking tavern and went inside.
The tavern was brightly lit and buzzing with voices. Many of the townsfolk were drinking and chatting, making the place feel quite lively.
Bena’s group found a corner table and sat down, while Neil and Lin Hao took charge of announcing the recruitment notice within the tavern.
Upon hearing the announcement, the people in the tavern began to murmur amongst themselves. A few even came forward to ask about the specific requirements and compensation.
Bena briefly assessed those who came forward to inquire. He found that while the people of Heishui Town were strong survivors, their actual abilities varied wildly, and there were no particularly outstanding candidates among them.
He was a little disappointed but didn’t give up. He continued to wait in the tavern, hoping to find someone with real potential.
Just then, a tall man walked up to their table. He looked to be around forty years old, with a rugged face, but his eyes held a steely glint of determination.
"Hello. I hear you’re recruiting?" the man asked.
Bena looked up at him and nodded. "That’s right, we’re recruiting."
"I’m Carlos. I used to be a mercenary," the man introduced himself. "I’m very confident in my skills. I was wondering if you might be interested."
Bena sized him up. The man was tall with well-defined muscles, the clear result of long-term training.
"Can you show us what you can do?" Bena asked.
Carlos nodded. He walked to an empty space in the center of the tavern, already wearing a pair of steel gauntlets.
A hint of fighting spirit flashed in Carlos’s eyes. He took a deep breath and began to swing his fists.
His style was simple and direct, with no flashy moves, but every punch packed immense power and speed.
His fists whistled through the air, and the surrounding crowd could feel an intense, oppressive force.
Bena watched Carlos’s technique closely. He saw that while the style was simple, every punch was packed with power, clearly a product of hard-won combat experience.
Furthermore, Carlos had excellent coordination. His footwork was nimble, allowing him to advance and retreat with ease, displaying a high level of combat discipline.
After watching for a moment, Bena suddenly, without a word, flashed to Carlos’s side.
Bena launched a whip kick directly at Carlos.
Carlos reacted with incredible speed, blocking Bena’s attack with both arms before countering with a punch aimed at Bena’s head.
Bena didn’t try to block it, instead retreating swiftly to evade Carlos’s counterattack.
The two men began a fierce exchange in the middle of the tavern. The clash of their power and speed, a blur of fists and feet, left the onlookers stunned.
Although Carlos’s style was simple, it was augmented by his tremendous strength and speed, giving every punch devastating power.
Bena, in contrast, relied on his agility and refined fighting techniques, constantly probing for an opening in Carlos’s defense.
The two traded blows, the battle growing more intense by the second. The surrounding crowd held their breath, afraid of missing a single detail.
Just then, Bena suddenly quickened his pace. His body became a blur, circling Carlos so fast that he left a trail of afterimages, making it impossible for the mercenary to tell which one was real.
