Chapter 199: Chapter 188: Corpse Ghost Leader
At Ye Yun’s command, all members within the shelter sprang into action.
Lin Hao quickly directed all the mutated creatures to move. The beasts, once scattered around the shelter, began to form orderly square formations.
Compared to the 200 Corpse Ghosts, Ye Yun’s shelter now controlled over 400 mutated creatures.
If it were purely a numbers game, the shelter’s mutated creatures would have an absolute advantage. However, the vast majority of these creatures were small, with low combat effectiveness.
According to the descriptions from Bena and the others, an ordinary Corpse Ghost was not as strong as a large mutated creature, but it far surpassed a common small one.
By normal calculations, one ordinary Corpse Ghost could probably eliminate 20 to 30 small mutated creatures, while it would take 3 to 5 ordinary Corpse Ghosts to take down a single large mutated creature.
Of course, a real battle couldn’t be calculated so simply.
The Corpse Ghosts themselves were highly infectious.
Whether human or mutated creature, anyone scratched or bitten by a Corpse Ghost would turn into one in a very short time.
This meant that if the Corpse Ghosts couldn’t be killed quickly, their numbers would only multiply as the fight went on.
One’s own forces could very well become the enemy’s strength.
This meant the 400-plus mutated creatures couldn’t easily join the fray; they could only provide support from the sidelines.
After all, while the chip controllers could direct the mutated creatures’ movements, they could only issue simple commands, not perform fine-tuned maneuvers.
This meant that if the mutated creatures joined the battle, injuries would be unavoidable. And once injured, they would quickly turn into Corpse Ghosts.
Ye Yun had no desire to see these mutated creatures become his enemies.
After all, capturing them had cost a considerable amount of effort and time, and the chips implanted in them had also consumed significant resources to acquire.
Although the mutated creatures were essentially cannon fodder, even cannon fodder had to have its use.
A pointless sacrifice that could even bolster the enemy’s ranks was something Ye Yun was determined to avoid.
Therefore, the main fighting force for this battle would consist almost entirely of the shelter’s members.
To Ye Yun’s great relief, the two suits of power armor were fully enclosed. As long as the armor wasn’t completely destroyed, it was virtually impossible to be harmed by a Corpse Ghost.
Bena and Lanton donned their respective power armor, and Zhou Mei put on her exoskeleton.
The three split into three teams, each leading a few people as they approached the distant Corpse Ghost horde.
··············
Half an hour later, the Corpse Ghost horde arrived as expected.
These Corpse Ghosts somewhat resembled humans in appearance, but their skin was an eerie blood-red, and their movements were incredibly contorted.
Their eyes had no pupils, only a deathly white.
Upon approaching the shelter, the horde didn’t attack immediately. Instead, it paused for a moment, as if observing something.
Bena stood atop a small hill, frowning at the distant horde.
He noticed that among the Corpse Ghosts, there seemed to be one that was exceptionally large. Its eyes glowed with an eerie red light, making it stand out.
Bena’s mind raced. ’That one is probably the Corpse Ghost Leader,’ he guessed.
He immediately relayed his discovery to the other two via his communicator.
"Lanton, Zhou Mei, keep an eye on the largest Corpse Ghost in the horde. It’s likely the Corpse Ghost Leader."
"If we can take it down, it might have a huge impact on the horde."
"Roger!"
"Roger!"
They immediately acknowledged Bena’s directive and began looking for an opportunity to attack the Corpse Ghost Leader.
Inside the shelter, Ye Yun frowned as he watched the dense mass of Corpse Ghosts in the distance.
’There are too many of them.’
"Bena, don’t engage yet. Let our traps thin out their numbers first."
Ye Yun issued the directive to Bena over the communicator.
"Don’t engage yet. Use the traps we’ve set to wear them down first."
"Understood, Administrator."
Bena acknowledged Ye Yun’s order, telling everyone to hold their positions and wait for the Corpse Ghost horde to approach.
They had already set up numerous traps around the shelter, specifically to counter a potential Corpse Ghost attack.
These traps included explosives, deep pits, and barbed spikes. Once the horde stepped into the trap zone, they would suffer heavy losses.
Following Ye Yun’s command, everyone began to wait patiently for the Corpse Ghosts to draw near.
After observing for a moment and apparently finding nothing amiss, the Corpse Ghost horde began to slowly advance toward the shelter.
The moment the horde stepped into the trap zone, Bena immediately gave the command.
"Activate the traps!"
At Bena’s order, the team members lying in ambush instantly activated the traps.
With a deafening BOOM, explosives detonated within the horde, sending flames, shockwaves, and numerous Corpse Ghosts flying.
The deep pits and barbed spikes also did their part; some Corpse Ghosts fell into the pits and were impaled on the sharp spikes.
In an instant, the front ranks of the Corpse Ghost horde suffered heavy casualties, and their numbers were significantly reduced.
However, the horde didn’t retreat. Instead, they charged toward the shelter with even greater frenzy.
Seeing this, Bena immediately led his people to meet the charge.
"Everyone, be careful! Don’t let the Corpse Ghosts injure you!"
