Chapter 200: Chapter 188: Corpse Ghost Leader (Part 2)
"Use the flamethrowers! Attack the Corpse Ghosts!"
The teams led by Bena, Lanton, and Zhou Mei were all equipped with portable flamethrowers and began spraying the Corpse Ghost horde.
The flamethrowers were incredibly effective. The Corpse Ghosts let out shrill shrieks as they were incinerated by the high-temperature flames.
Some of the Corpse Ghosts, engulfed in flames, turned into living fireballs. They scrambled about wildly before quickly being reduced to ash.
Meanwhile, Ye Yun was monitoring the battle from inside the shelter.
After the first wave of traps hit, the Corpse Ghosts immediately halted their attack. The remaining hundred or so creatures retreated in an orderly fashion and quickly reformed their ranks.
Seeing this, Ye Yun’s brows furrowed deeply.
According to the intelligence gathered over the past few days, Corpse Ghosts did possess some intelligence, but it wasn’t much higher than that of a mutated beast—at best, on par with a five or six-year-old child.
However, watching their clean and efficient movements, it was clear they were not acting like creatures of low intelligence.
His gaze immediately locked onto the largest one in the middle of the Corpse Ghost horde.
’That thing is most likely the so-called Corpse Ghost Leader. It seems to be directing the horde’s assault.’
"Bena, try to attack the horde’s leader. See if you can disrupt it."
Ye Yun issued the command to Bena through the communicator.
Bena immediately spotted the Corpse Ghost Leader. He led a squad of his men and advanced toward it.
The Corpse Ghost Leader also noticed Bena’s approach. It let out a roar, and the surrounding Corpse Ghosts swarmed toward him.
Bena and his squad used their flamethrowers to set the charging Corpse Ghosts alight, continuing their advance toward the leader.
Seeing this, the Corpse Ghost Leader launched an attack on Bena itself.
Despite its massive size, its movements were exceptionally agile. It leaped in front of Bena in a single bound, swiping its sharp claws at his head.
Although Bena was wearing power armor, he didn’t dare underestimate this 2.5-meter-tall Corpse Ghost. He immediately raised his weapon to parry.
However, the Corpse Ghost Leader’s strength was immense. Even though Bena blocked the attack, the impact still sent him stumbling back several steps.
Feeling the vibrations rattle his power armor, Bena drew a sharp breath.
This was the first time he had been knocked back in a head-on fight since getting his power armor.
And his opponent was a Corpse Ghost even smaller than himself! He knew that in his power armor, he could tank hits from some large mutated beasts that were four meters long.
’I thought I’d already overestimated its strength, but looking at this outcome, I’ve clearly still underestimated it.’
The Corpse Ghost Leader seized the opportunity to launch an even more ferocious offensive. Bena could only focus on parrying, and he was quickly locked in a difficult struggle.
Meanwhile, Lanton and Zhou Mei were also leading their teams in a fierce assault on the Corpse Ghost horde.
They used the advantage of their flamethrowers to split the horde apart, picking them off one by one.
With everyone working together, the number of Corpse Ghosts steadily decreased, and the situation was gradually brought under control.
However, the Corpse Ghost Leader’s combat prowess was formidable. Despite Bena’s fierce battle with it, he couldn’t manage to defeat it.
And as the fight wore on, Bena was clearly starting to lose ground.
Seeing this from a distance, Zhou Mei immediately turned and rushed in Bena’s direction.
Because of the Corpse Ghosts’ infectious nature, Zhou Mei wasn’t using her usual daggers this time. Instead, she had switched to two longer shortswords to give herself a greater margin for error.
Zhou Mei’s movements were incredibly swift. She wore an exoskeleton suit, which greatly enhanced her strength and speed.
She brandished the alloy shortswords in her hands. With each exceptionally nimble slash, Corpse Ghosts fell in her path.
Zhou Mei quickly reached Bena’s side, joining him in the fight against the Corpse Ghost Leader.
The Corpse Ghost Leader noticed Zhou Mei’s approach. It let out a roar and tried to bat her away with its claws.
However, Zhou Mei was faster. She deftly dodged the leader’s attack and then slashed its body with one of her blades.
Although the Corpse Ghost Leader’s skin was tough, Zhou Mei’s alloy shortsword still managed to cut a deep gash into it.
The Corpse Ghost Leader let out a pained shriek and turned to counterattack Zhou Mei.
Zhou Mei didn’t clash with the leader head-on. Instead, she used the agility of her exoskeleton suit to constantly dodge and counter.
Her alloy shortswords continuously left gashes on the Corpse Ghost Leader’s body. Although none of the cuts were fatal on their own, the accumulated damage was significant.
With Zhou Mei joining the fray, the pressure on Bena was immediately relieved.
After catching his breath for a moment, Bena began using his power armor’s advantages to pin down the Corpse Ghost Leader.
His main task was to draw the leader’s attention, creating opportunities for Zhou Mei to attack.
With Bena and Zhou Mei working in tandem, the Corpse Ghost Leader’s situation grew increasingly dire. Its body was now covered in wounds, and its movements had become sluggish.
From a distance, Lanton saw that Bena’s side had stabilized for the time being, so he didn’t rush in to join their fight.
After all, besides the leader, there were still many other Corpse Ghosts. He had to reduce their numbers as quickly as possible.
Otherwise, his subordinates would sooner or later suffer a lapse in concentration from the prolonged, high-intensity battle. If anyone got scratched by a Corpse Ghost, with the shelter’s current medical capabilities, they could only watch helplessly as the person turned. The only other option was to kill their own comrade before the transformation was complete.
As the battle raged on, the number of Corpse Ghosts continued to dwindle, and the situation was gradually brought under control.
However, the Corpse Ghost Leader’s combat strength was still formidable. Even though Bena and Zhou Mei’s teamwork had heavily wounded it, it had not yet been defeated.
Inside the shelter, Ye Yun watched the battle closely. He noted that the Corpse Ghost Leader’s movements were becoming more and more sluggish, but it showed no signs of giving up.
Seeing the situation improving rapidly, Ye Yun didn’t urge them to hurry.
"Bena, Zhou Mei, focus on containing the Corpse Ghost Leader. Be careful, it might lash out in desperation. The two of you just need to restrict its movements. Everyone else, speed up clearing out the rest of the horde."
Ye Yun issued new orders through the communicator.
"Understood, Administrator."
Bena and Zhou Mei responded.
The two of them naturally understood Ye Yun’s meaning and both increased their distance from the Corpse Ghost Leader.
Meanwhile, the others quickened their pace in clearing out the Corpse Ghost horde.
Lanton’s team continuously used their flamethrowers to break up the horde and eliminate them one by one.
As time passed, the horde’s numbers dwindled. The Corpse Ghost Leader clearly realized the situation was dire. The red glow in its eyes intensified, and its attacks became even more ferocious.
But Bena and Zhou Mei had anticipated this and didn’t engage it head-on. Another half hour passed, and eventually, only the Corpse Ghost Leader remained.
Bena, Zhou Mei, and Lanton surrounded the Corpse Ghost Leader, preparing for the final assault.
Though heavily wounded, the Corpse Ghost Leader had not given up. It let out a roar and charged the three of them one last time.
Bena and Lanton used the advantage of their power armor to directly tank the creature’s attacks.
Through their coordinated efforts, the Corpse Ghost Leader was finally defeated and collapsed to the ground.
Everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief as they watched the Corpse Ghost Leader’s head get lopped off with a single strike.
Honestly, the Corpse Ghosts’ combat ability wasn’t that strong. However, their infectiousness was just vile. A single scratch or bite would turn you into one of them, which forced everyone to fight with extreme caution.
Their combat effectiveness, which should have been at one hundred percent, was reduced to eighty percent at best due to this need for caution.
This kind of hesitant fighting was not only physically draining but also mentally exhausting for everyone.
Thankfully, all the Corpse Ghosts had now been eliminated.
Bena didn’t let his guard down completely, however. He reminded them:
"Stay sharp. Chop the heads off all these corpses. Make sure none get away. These things are more resilient than mutated beasts; only decapitation will kill them for good."
Hearing Bena’s warning, everyone’s expressions turned serious again.
One by one, they began to carefully inspect the Corpse Ghost bodies on the ground.
