Chapter 224: Chapter 200: Little Oasis (Part 2)
Zhou Mei patiently answered everyone’s questions, all the while observing their strength and potential.
She found that while most of them were of average strength, there were a few who showed some decent abilities.
Just then, a burly man walked up to Zhou Mei. He looked to be around thirty years old, with a resolute face and an unyielding light in his eyes.
"Hello. I heard you’re recruiting?" the man asked.
Zhou Mei glanced up at him and nodded. "That’s right, we are."
"I’m Leo. I used to be a Bounty Hunter,"
the man introduced himself. "I’m very confident in my skills. I was wondering if you might be interested."
Zhou Mei sized him up. He was burly, with well-defined muscles that were clearly the result of long-term training.
"Can you show us what you can do?" Zhou Mei asked.
Leo nodded. He walked to an open space in the center of the tavern, already wearing a pair of steel gauntlets.
A flash of fighting spirit lit up in Leo’s eyes. He took a deep breath and began to swing his fists.
His fighting style was simple and direct, with no fancy moves, but every punch packed immense power and speed. His fists whistled through the air, and the surrounding crowd could feel a powerful, oppressive force.
Zhou Mei observed Leo’s technique closely. She saw that while his style was simple, every punch was packed with power, clearly honed by extensive, real-world combat experience.
Furthermore, Leo’s coordination was excellent. His footwork was nimble, allowing him to advance and retreat with ease, demonstrating a high degree of combat training.
After watching for a moment, Zhou Mei suddenly moved without a word, flashing to Leo’s side. She launched a whip kick straight at him.
Leo’s reaction was incredibly fast. He immediately blocked Zhou Mei’s attack with his arms and countered with a punch aimed at her head.
Instead of meeting it head-on, Zhou Mei quickly retreated, dodging Leo’s counterattack.
The two began a fierce exchange in the middle of the tavern. The clash of fists and feet, a collision of power and speed, left the surrounding crowd in shock.
Though Leo’s fighting style was simple, it was backed by immense strength and speed, giving every punch devastating destructive power.
Zhou Mei, in contrast, relied on her agile movements and sophisticated fighting techniques, constantly probing for an opening in Leo’s defense.
They went back and forth, the fight growing more and more intense. The surrounding crowd held their breath, afraid they might miss a single detail.
Just then, Zhou Mei suddenly quickened the pace of her attacks. Her body became a blur of afterimages, circling Leo so quickly that he couldn’t tell which was her true self.
Although Leo did his best to defend, Zhou Mei found an opening and landed a solid punch to his abdomen.
Leo grunted in pain, instinctively doubling over.
Zhou Mei didn’t press her advantage. Instead, she withdrew her fist and gestured for Leo to continue the fight.
Leo took a few deep breaths to ease the pain in his abdomen, then straightened back up.
"I lost. You’re really strong," Leo said, looking at Zhou Mei with a flash of admiration in his eyes.
Zhou Mei clapped him on the shoulder. "You’re plenty strong yourself. We’d be glad to have you."
Leo nodded, a determined glint in his eyes. "I’ll give my all to the shelter."
With Leo’s recruitment, the atmosphere in the tavern grew even more heated.
At first, no one had paid much attention to Zhou Mei’s small group. After all, they were too few. In the wasteland, a group couldn’t form a powerful fighting force without a certain number of members.
However, after seeing her display such incredible personal strength, many people’s opinions of her group changed completely. After all, enough individual power could make up for a lack of numbers.
Many people were now eager to try their luck, hoping to join the shelter and secure a better living environment.
Zhou Mei and her team continued to advertise their recruitment in the tavern while also scouting for potential talent around town.
After Leo, a few more people came forward to apply, but they were all of average strength. There were no other outstanding candidates.
Zhou Mei wasn’t discouraged. She knew that in the wasteland, talent was something you chanced upon, not something you could actively seek out.
She had her team continue posting the recruitment notice in the tavern while she and Leo wandered around town to see if they could spot any promising individuals.
The two of them started making small talk as they walked.
In their conversation, Zhou Mei learned that Leo had worked as a guard and an enforcer in several wasteland settlements and had a wealth of combat experience.
His family had been killed in an attack by mutated creatures, and he had wandered the wasteland alone ever since, surviving as a Bounty Hunter.
Zhou Mei sympathized with Leo’s past and also expressed her admiration for his strength and experience.
She was confident that Leo’s addition would be a great asset to the shelter.
As they talked, the conversation soon turned to the current situation in and around Little Oasis.
As Zhou Mei and Leo discussed the situation around Little Oasis, a grave look appeared in Leo’s eyes.
"Don’t be fooled by how prosperous Little Oasis looks. The fatter the prize, the more flies it attracts."
Leo said in a low voice, "Little Oasis may be rich in resources, but that’s also attracted the covetous attention of many different factions."
Zhou Mei nodded. She knew this was a common situation in the wasteland.
"So, what do you know about the situation here in Little Oasis?" Zhou Mei asked.
Leo thought for a moment, then said, "I’ve spent some time here, so I know the lay of the land, more or less."
"The administrator of Little Oasis is a man named Marlo. He’s ruthless and controls most of the resources here."
"But it seems he’s run into some trouble lately."
Zhou Mei felt a stir of interest at his words.
"What kind of trouble?" Zhou Mei asked.
Leo glanced around and lowered his voice. "I’ve heard that some unidentified people have been active around Little Oasis recently. They seem to be looking for something."
"Marlo sent people to investigate, but none of them ever came back."
Zhou Mei frowned. She had a feeling this matter wasn’t so simple.
"What are you planning to do about it?" Zhou Mei asked.
Leo shook his head. "I’m just a Bounty Hunter. This isn’t the kind of thing I want to get mixed up in."
Zhou Mei nodded, understanding his hesitation.
"Still, if you ever need help, know that I’ve got your back," Zhou Mei said.
Leo glanced at Zhou Mei, a flicker of gratitude in his eyes. "Thanks. I’ll let you know if I need anything."
Zhou Mei smiled faintly. She knew Leo would be a reliable ally.
The two continued to wander through Little Oasis, searching for potential recruits.
Thanks to Leo’s explanations, Zhou Mei gained a much deeper understanding of the situation in Little Oasis.
She discovered that while Little Oasis appeared prosperous on the surface, there was a turbulent undercurrent of various factions vying for influence.
Zhou Mei decided that while recruiting, she would also keep an eye on developments in Little Oasis and see if she could find any useful clues.
Just then, a gaunt man walked up to Zhou Mei. He looked to be around thirty, his face was haggard, but his eyes held a determined glint.
"Hello. I heard you’re recruiting?" the man asked.
Zhou Mei glanced up at him and nodded. "That’s right, we are."
"I’m Jack, and I used to be an engineer," the man introduced himself. "I’m very confident in my technical skills. I was wondering if you might be interested?"
Zhou Mei sized him up. Though he was gaunt, his eyes held an intelligent spark.
"Can you demonstrate your skills for us?" Zhou Mei asked.
Jack nodded. He took some tools from his backpack and began to demonstrate his skills.
His movements were deft, and he quickly assembled a small mechanical device.
Zhou Mei watched Jack’s work carefully. She could see his skills were superb, clearly honed through years of practice.
"Your skills are very impressive. We welcome you to the team," Zhou Mei said.
