Thoren jumped down from the back of his undead Greater Dune Scorpion, his boots landing silently against the blackened ground.
He raised his head and stared at the gigantic structure before him, and without wasting any time, he released his perception to its limit.
But to his surprise, he found nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
Even the air inside the building seemed completely still, as if countless years had passed without anything disturbing the silence that had settled within its walls.
The darkness was so deep that even the faint light coming from outside seemed to disappear only a few meters after entering.
Thoren narrowed his eyes as his perception continued sweeping through the building but nothing appeared in his perception.
His expression became increasingly solemn.
’Whatever you are hiding, I’m going to find it.’
With that thought, Thoren stepped forward. The moment his foot crossed the enormous entrance of the building, something changed.
The darkness vanished and the ancient black walls disappeared.
Everything around him suddenly twisted.
And in that moment, the world he came to know was gone and its place was.
Bright lights.
White walls.
Rows of desks.
Computer monitors and the familiar hum of air conditioners while the faint sound of keyboards clicking in the distance.
For a moment, Thoren froze on his seat.
His eyes widened slightly as he stared at the scene before him, and for several seconds, he simply sat there without moving.
"This..." His voice was barely a whisper.
He felt something was amiss. Strange and out of place but he could not wrap his head around it. It was as if he did not belong to this office.
But how was that possible?
This was his dream job and with a stroke of luck, he managed to snag it after his graduation. This had been his pride, his joy but now, everything seems out of place.
Before he could continue to contemplate on the strange feeling, a familiar feminine voice suddenly came from behind him.
"Still working on that project?"
Thoren’s body stiffened and his heart skipped a beat.
Slowly, he turned his head and she was.
A beautiful woman stood several steps behind him, her long hair falling over her shoulders as she stared at him with a familiar smile.
Mabel.
His girlfriend.
This again unsettled him.
He felt this was not her girlfriend but the memory in his head spoke of another thing entirely. He could remember how hard he worked to get her to become his woman.
So why was there something negative about her? He tried desperately to get his hand on this feeling but it was futile. No matter how he tried, the feeling was elusive, escaping from his grasp.
Watching her boyfriend blank expression, Mabel walked toward his desk with the same confident steps he remembered.
She stopped beside him before leaning slightly against the edge of his table.
Her eyes carried that familiar playful and seductive expression that she used whenever she wanted to tease him.
"You’ve been staring at that screen for hours," she said with a soft chuckle, "and judging by that expression, I don’t think you’ve made much progress."
Thoren stared at her silently.
Mabel raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"Nothing."
He finally answered, his voice calmer than the turmoil inside his heart.
She smiled.
"Still stubborn as ever."
She leaned closer over the desk, deliberately invading his personal space as she lowered her voice, and the familiar perfume that Thoren remembered reached his nose.
And instantly, his cheek flushed and his heart quickened.
Mabel noticed the faint redness spreading across his cheeks, and a mischievous glint immediately appeared in her eyes.
"Oh?"
She deliberately tilted her head, studying his face with an amused smile.
"Are you blushing?"
"No."
His answer came almost immediately.
Mabel’s smile widened.
"You are."
"I’m not."
"You definitely are."
She leaned slightly closer, clearly enjoying his reaction, and Thoren instinctively leaned back in his chair, only for his back to meet the seat.
There was nowhere to escape.
Mabel laughed softly when she saw his predicament.
"I’ve been your girlfriend for this long, and you still get embarrassed whenever I get this close to you?"
Thoren’s eyes flickered as he tried to remain composed as he could not understand why he was blushing just because his girlfriend got closer to him.
Noticing his silence, Mabel asked with a smile.
"What’s wrong with you today?"
"Nothing."
"You’re acting strange."
"Maybe I’m just tired."
She stared at him for another second before eventually shrugging, apparently satisfied with his answer.
"Fine, Mr. Hardworking."
She straightened herself and picked up a folder from the desk before placing it in front of him.
"Since you’re already finished with this one, I want you to handle another project."
Thoren looked at the folder.
"Another one?"
"Yes, another one," she replied with an amused smile, "and before you complain, remember that I’m your boss."
"You love using that excuse."
"Of course I do."
She smiled brightly, then leaned closer one last time and lowered her voice.
"Besides, if you finish it before the deadline, maybe I’ll reward you."
Thoren stared at her for a moment.
"You’re bribing your employee?"
"Your girlfriend is bribing you," Mabel corrected with a playful smile.
Mabel had always been like this.
Confident.
Playful.
Shameless when she wanted something.
And perhaps that was one of the reasons he had fallen for her
Before he could respond, she turned around and began walking away, her confident steps carrying her toward the opposite side of the office while the folder remained on his desk.
She glanced over her shoulder.
"Don’t disappoint me."
Then she continued walking, her hips swaying naturally as she disappeared among the rows of desks.
Thoren remained seated.
His eyes stayed fixed on the place where she had disappeared and a gratified grin plastered on his face. He could remember how many looked down on him, calling him a simp.
But now, he has proven them all wrong.
Banging such a goddess, what more could he ever ask for?
