With a grim expression, Thoren stood on the back of the undead Greater Dune Scorpion as it raced across the endless bone plain.

Its massive legs crushed smaller fragments of bones beneath its feet while clouds of pale dust rose behind them.

For hours, he had followed the map given to him by the Ancient Scorpion, moving steadily toward the northern region.

Throughout the journey, the endless field of bones remained almost unchanged, stretching toward the horizon like the remains of an entire civilization.

Just then, the scenery slowly began to change.

At first, the bones became fewer and then they became scattered. And finally, they disappeared altogether.

Thoren’s deep blue eyes narrowed slightly as he watched the endless white plain gradually give way to dark soil.

The ground beneath the undead Greater Dune Scorpion was no longer covered in pale bones and crimson sand.

It was black.

Not the ordinary black of fertile soil.

It was a deep, lifeless darkness that seemed to absorb the little light reaching the ground, giving the entire landscape an unnatural appearance.

Thin streams of steam slowly rose from cracks in the dark earth. They drifted upward lazily before fading into the air as though they had never existed.

There was no sound.

No hiss.

No boiling.

Nothing.

The silence was even more unsettling.

Thoren stared at the steams rising from the ground for several seconds before shifting his gaze toward the distance.

The further they traveled, the darker the land became.

The desert wind that had long vanished, leaving behind a strange stillness that made the entire region feel isolated.

Yet, Thoren’s expression did not change. His face remained solemn, while his deep blue eyes burned with firm determination.

Whatever awaited him ahead, he had already come too far to turn back.

The dark landscape blurred around him.

After traveling deeper into the strange region, Thoren suddenly noticed something in the distance.

A city.

He narrowed his eyes slightly.

At first, it appeared to be nothing more than a collection of dark shapes scattered across the horizon, but as the undead mount approached, their silhouettes gradually became clearer.

Massive walls and collapsed buildings.

Thoren stared at it silently.

Unlike the other ruins he had encountered throughout the Bleeding Desert, this city had not been buried beneath mountains of sand.

It had not been swallowed by the desert.

It had not been reduced to scattered fragments.

It was still standing, though barely.

The outer walls remained mostly intact while several enormous sections had collapsed, leaving jagged gaps, allowing him to see what lies beyond.

There were marks of destruction everywhere.

Deep claw marks carved into the walls with long cracks running across the streets.

Collapsed buildings.

Broken gates.

Some structures appeared to have been struck by something powerful enough to tear through solid stone.

Yet strangely, there were no bodies.

The closer he approached, the more unsettling the city became.

Everything was black.

The walls were black.

The streets were black.

The broken houses were black.

Even the stone pillars lining the ancient roads had turned black, their surfaces smooth and strangely polished.

It was as if the entire city had been transformed into charcoal while remaining perfectly intact.

Thoren slowed his mount.

The undead Greater Dune Scorpion came to a steady pace as they approached the ruined city’s outer gate.

The gate itself was enormous.

Two massive ancient doors stood half-open, their surfaces covered with strange markings that looked almost like fingerprints pressed into the stone.

For a moment, Thoren stared at them and he felt a faint chill travelled down his spine.

Only the occasional sound of steam escaping from the dark ground behind him.

Hisssss...

Thoren slowly looked over his shoulder.

A thin stream of steam rose from a crack in the earth. It twisted upward like a pale ghost before disappearing.

When he turned back toward the city, his eyes narrowed.

For a fraction of a second, he thought he had seen something standing behind one of the broken buildings.

A figure.

Tall.

Motionless and was watching him.

To be safe, he immediately focused his gaze on the location.

Nothing.

Nothing at all.

Only the black ruins remained.

"Interesting..." His voice was barely above a whisper.

Slowly, the undead Greater Dune Scorpion continued forward. As they crossed beneath the ruined gate, the atmosphere suddenly became heavier.

Instantly, Thoren felt it.

The temperature had dropped and the darkness seemed thicker while the air smelled faintly of something he could not identify.

Not blood.

Not decay.

His eyes swept across the empty street, checking the buildings on both sides. Each building stood like tombstones.

Some had their windows completely open, revealing nothing but absolute darkness inside.

Others had doors hanging halfway open.

A few appeared to have been abandoned only moments ago, with blackened furniture still sitting inside.

But there were no people.

No corpses.

No signs of where they had gone.

Thoren’s gaze eventually settled on a building whose upper floor had partially collapsed while a black handprint was visible on the remaining wall.

For a second, he stared at it.

The handprint was far too large to belong to an ordinary creature.

Five elongated fingers.

Long claw marks.

And beneath it were several smaller handprints. It was as if someone had desperately tried to crawl away.

Averting his gaze, Thoren’s expression became colder as the undead Greater Dune Scorpion came to a stop.

Thoren looked ahead and at the end of the street stood a massive structure that towered over the rest of the city.

Unlike the surrounding buildings, it remained almost completely intact.

Its black walls were covered with countless ancient markings, and several enormous statues stood before its entrance, their faces worn away by time.

Yet despite their damaged appearance, all the statues were facing the same direction.

Toward him.

Seeing this, Thoren muscle stiffened and a strange sensation suddenly crawled across his skin.

It felt as though the entire city was watching him. It was as if all of them were staring at the lone human who had just entered their forgotten home.

As for Thoren, he remained motionless for several seconds and then he slowly smiled.

It was not a smile of amusement.

It was the expression of someone who had finally found what he was looking for.
