Global Survival: I Have Endless Skeletons
Chapter 551: Back to the SurfaceThoren felt a strange sense of anticipation filling his heart as the mysterious power of the Abyss wrapped around his body.
Lifting him slowly from the ground and carrying him upward through the endless darkness of the Abyssal tunnel.
The mysterious power of the Abyss simply carried him upward as if he were nothing more than a leaf floating along an invisible current.
Thoren could still feel the tremendous amount of mana running rampant throughout the tunnel, surging through the darkness like an endless ocean that had been trapped within the depths of the world.
But now, he was finally returning.
Returning to the surface.
Returning to his family.
A faint smile gradually appeared on Thoren’s face.
For all the things he had experienced inside the Abyss, for all the battles he had fought and all the secrets he had uncovered, there was one thought that had remained buried deep within his heart.
His parents.
And his little sister.
As he couldn’t wait to see them.
He couldn’t wait to know how much they had changed while he was gone. Thinking about it, the coldness that usually surrounded Thoren’s expression slowly disappeared.
A genuine smile spread across his face.
’I’m finally coming back.’ The thought alone made his heart beat slightly faster.
He had imagined this moment countless times.
He had imagined walking out of the Abyss and seeing the familiar sunlight once again, imagined returning home and surprising his family.
For the first time in a long time, Thoren allowed himself to indulge in such thoughts without thinking about the Abyss, the Blood Ritual, and the Crimson Womb.
He simply wanted to go home.
The darkness around him gradually became thinner.
The oppressive feeling that had accompanied him throughout the Abyssal tunnel slowly disappeared, and faint light finally appeared in the distance.
Thoren’s smile widened.
’The surface.’
His body continued rising until, finally, the mysterious power carrying him released its hold.
His feet slowly descended.
The moment he passed through the boundary separating the Abyss from the surface, the strange mana-filled darkness disappeared completely.
Fresh air rushed toward him.
For several seconds, he simply stood there without moving, staring at the scene before him.
"This..." His voice was barely audible.
Slowly, his expression became grim as he stared at the scene before him.
This was not what he expected.
This was not the world he remembered.
The familiar surroundings around the Abyss Gateway had completely transformed into a battlefield.
Ferocious beasts were everywhere.
Hundreds.
Thousands.
Tens of thousands.
Perhaps even hundreds of thousands.
They filled the horizon like an endless black tide, their roars shaking the ground as they charged toward the base defensive lines.
They trampled everything beneath their enormous bodies while blood and flesh were scattered across the battlefield.
"Fall back!"
"Don’t let them break through!"
"Where is the reinforcement?!"
"Someone call for help!"
"Medic! We need a medic here!"
"Move! Move!"
Shouts and screams filled the air.
Soldiers stationed a couple of meters from the Abyss Gateway were desperately trying to organize the defense, but the sheer number of beasts rushing toward them made their efforts look almost meaningless.
The heavy roar of thermal weapons thundered continuously across the battlefield.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
A massive thermal cannon fired from the top of the defense wall, unleashing a destructive blast that tore through a section of the beast tide, sending countless beasts flying through the air.
But before the smoke could even clear, another wave of beasts rushed forward and filled the gap.
It was endless.
No matter how many beasts the soldiers killed, more continued to appear from the distance.
Thoren’s expression became increasingly solemn.
The human race weapons had become more powerful while their defensive structures had also become stronger.
Soldiers even possessed physical abilities that would have been impossible before the arrival of mana.
Humanity had broken through bottlenecks that had existed for generations. Fields that had remained stagnant for decades had suddenly advanced at an astonishing speed.
Technology has evolved.
Weapons had evolved.
Human bodies had evolved.
Yet against the almost endless ferocious beast, their technology became useless.
They were losing.
Badly.
A massive beast slammed into the defensive wall, shaking the structure to its core. Cracks immediately spread across the reinforced steel.
Several soldiers were thrown from their feet.
"Hold the line!"
Another beast crashed into the wall.
Boom!
This time, a section of the defensive wall collapsed completely.
The soldiers standing there didn’t even have enough time to react before the beasts poured through the opening.
"AAAAHHHH!"
A soldier was knocked into the air by a massive claw before another beast caught him between its jaws.
Crunch!
His scream abruptly ended.
Another soldier tried to escape, only for a beast to leap onto his back and tear him apart.
Blood splattered across the ground.
The scene was chaotic.
Brutal.
And completely one-sided.
Human blood flowed across the battlefield alongside the blood of beasts, mixing together until the ground itself seemed to have transformed into a river of blood.
Thoren’s eyes swept across the battlefield.
Various sections of Suncrest City’s defensive walls had already been destroyed.
Several massive defensive weapons had been reduced to scrap metal.
Buildings behind the defensive lines had collapsed under the impact of the battle.
Smoke filled the sky.
The smell of blood and burning metal filled the air.
A massive wolf-like beast caught a fleeing soldier and dragged him into the ground while several smaller beasts immediately swarmed over his body.
The screams never stopped.
Thoren stood motionless.
"How could this be?" His voice was low.
He couldn’t understand.
It was general knowledge that for a beast tide to appear on the surface, the first floor of the Abyss had to become overcrowded with beasts.
That was the reason humanity had been able to survive beast tides in the first place.
The Abyss acted as a massive sink.
Humans continuously descended into it.
The beasts were hunted and their numbers were controlled firmly.
As long as humans continued entering the Abyss and killing beasts, the population on the first floor should never have reached a level capable of producing such an enormous beast tide.
And yet, what he was witnessing was completely different.
This wasn’t an ordinary beast tide.
There were simply too many.
Far too many.
’Unless...’ Thoren’s eyes slowly narrowed and a dreadful possibility appeared in his mind.
