"I wouldn't underestimate him if I were you."
There was a clear warning in his tone this time, but the other goblin either didn't hear it or simply didn't care.
He continued closing the distance until he was standing directly in front of Narg.
Then, as though trying to assert his authority, he placed a hand on Narg's shoulder.
"I don't know what you're planning, goblin, but..."
SWAT!
The goblin couldn't finish.
Narg casually knocked his hand away.
The instant their contact broke, something strange happened.
The goblin's body suddenly cracked.
A faint surge of dark energy passed through him, and before anyone could react, his entire body burst apart into ashes.
The remains scattered across the ground, leaving nothing behind but a thin cloud of dust that quickly dispersed into the air.
Silence fell over the clearing.
Then gasps echoed through the army.
The goblins and orcs watching the confrontation were visibly stunned by what they had just witnessed. Some froze where they stood, their hands tightening around their weapons as they stared at the empty space where their commander had been only moments ago.
Others instinctively took a step backward.
They couldn't understand what had happened.
Their commander had approached a single goblin with complete confidence.
He had touched him. And a second later, he was dead. Just like that.
"Told you," Belmut said, shaking his head.
He wasn't surprised by what had just happened. He had already warned the others not to underestimate Narg, and now they had seen exactly why.
But despite the obvious, he found his ally getting killed quickly rather unsettling. He'd expected a bit more fight.
Belmut stepped forward, his voice booming across the clearing.
"All of you, step back! He's my prey!"
The surrounding goblins and orcs obeyed, creating space as Belmut strutted forward with his weapon in hand.
But as he drew closer and his eyes settled on Narg, his footsteps gradually slowed.
Something had changed.
The aura Narg was releasing was completely different from before.
Back when they had been fighting inside the clan, Narg had been holding himself back, constantly restricting his power because of the destruction it could cause to the surrounding area.
Now nothing was restraining him.
The oppressive aura pouring from his body was far more intense than anything Belmut had felt from him before, and with every step he took closer, the pressure seemed to become heavier.
Narg slowly raised his head.
Their eyes met.
Belmut froze.
For some reason, he couldn't bring himself to take another step forward.
What?! What is this...?
His grip tightened around his weapon.
Why does he look like an entirely different goblin?
Narg's expression remained calm, but there was a faint grin on his face as dark tendrils began pouring from his body.
They spilled outward like a dam of black ink had suddenly been broken, spreading across his limbs and crawling over his torso with unnatural speed.
"I think you're mistaken, orc," Narg said.
The tendrils continued to spread, wrapping around his entire body like living armor. They covered his arms, legs, chest, and shoulders, even engulfing his staff until the weapon was almost completely hidden beneath the mass of darkness.
Belmut felt a growing sense of unease as he watched the darkness covering Narg's body. Whatever restraint the goblin had been showing earlier was clearly gone, and the pressure radiating from him was enough to make Belmut instinctively tighten his grip on his axe.
He swung it, intending to release another power cleave.
But before the slash could even burst from the weapon, Narg raised his staff and fired a bolt of blackness directly toward him.
The attack moved far faster than Belmut expected.
It struck his arm in the middle of his swing, and the moment it made contact, the darkness spread across his flesh like ink dropped into water.
Belmut's eyes widened.
The corruption consumed his entire arm and continued toward his shoulder, moving with terrifying speed as it began eating through his body.
Belmut reacted immediately.
With a grimace, he swung his axe toward his own arm and severed it before the corruption could reach the rest of his body.
His severed arm hit the ground.
Within seconds, the black corruption completely consumed it, reducing the limb to ashes that scattered across the ground.
A look of shock and relief crossed Belmut's face as he realized he had managed to cut off the corruption in time.
But his relief quickly faded.
His brows creased with worry as he realized something was wrong. The corruption had never spread that quickly before. During their previous battle, he had been able to react to it, but this time, it had consumed his entire arm almost instantly.
So what was happening?
Belmut didn't have time to figure it out.
His severed arm had already begun to regenerate. Bone formed first, followed by muscle and flesh as his regenerative ability rapidly reconstructed the missing limb.
But the arm had barely finished taking shape when Belmut noticed something else.
The sky was suddenly growing dark.
Belmut looked up.
His expression changed.
Narg was surging forward, his body covered completely in the mass of dark tendrils as numerous beams of dark light began forming above him.
One after another, they appeared across the sky.
There were too many to count.
The beams stretched across the battlefield, their combined darkness spreading overhead until they seemed to envelop the entire area, covering both Belmut and the army of goblins beneath them.
The sheer scale of the attack made the entire army fall silent.
Belmut stared upward, his newly regenerated hand tightening around his axe.
For the first time since the battle had begun, Belmut took a step backward. He hadn't meant to do it. His body had simply reacted.
The darkness covering the sky, the overwhelming pressure pouring from Narg, and the sheer number of attacks gathering above them had triggered something deeper than caution.
It was fear.
Belmut's pupils trembled.
And only one thought entered his mind.
Most certainly...I had bitten off more than I could chew.
