Ka’z rolled his shoulders slowly, feeling the lingering ache from Loki’s previous attack disappeared. A cold grin tugged at the edges of his lips as he leaned forward, extending his right hand while gripping Ashin Grim tightly.
His knees bent slightly and his posture lowered, preparing his body for the next exchange. Then the blood covering the battlefield began to move. Thin streams crept toward him from every direction, sliding across the dirt before climbing his legs and flowing up his body.
More blood gathered around his arm, then poured toward the battle axe in his hand. It climbed over the shaft and spread across the weapon’s blade until Ashin Grim was completely covered in a thick layer of crimson liquid.
The cheers from the goblins immediately began to die down as they noticed the change. One by one, their eyes shifted from Loki toward the ground, and their expressions changed when they saw the blood creeping across the battlefield. The puddles left behind by the countless dead were no longer remaining where they had fallen.
Loki’s frown deepened as he glanced around them. Blood had already encircled both fighters, forming a wide crimson boundary around the small patch of earth where they stood.
"That’s what you have been preparing?" Loki asked calmly.
Ka’z nodded without hesitation. "You are a difficult opponent to beat... I needed to bring my element close if I wish to overpower you." He chuckled, his golden eyes remaining fixed on Loki.
A small smile appeared on Loki’s face. He wasn’t sure whether he should be pleased that his opponent had acknowledged his strength or worried that Ka’z had considered him dangerous enough to take precautions against.
Loki crouched lower and assumed a proper fighting stance, planting his feet firmly into the ground while tightening his grip around his spear. He took several deep breaths, forcing his body to settle despite the exhaustion beginning to weigh on him. His instincts were screaming that the battle was approaching its conclusion. The next few exchanges would decide everything. He could not afford to hold anything back.
"Alright... Let’s get this over with," Ka’z hissed.
Bang!
Both fighters exploded forward at the same time. The ground cracked beneath their feet as they crossed the distance between them, and the spectators barely had enough time to follow their movements before their weapons collided.
Bang!
Ashin Grim crashed against Loki’s spear, releasing a mild shockwave that pushed dust and loose blood away from the point of impact. Both weapons trembled from the collision, but Ka’z immediately forced his strength into the exchange. His muscles bulged as Blood Empowerment surged through his body, and with a powerful swing, he overpowered Loki almost effortlessly.
"Haaa!"
Loki was forced backward, his feet skidding across the dirt as Ka’z’s axe drove him away. The blood covering Ashin Grim followed the movement of the blade, stretching outward in a long crimson arc before whipping through the air toward Loki. Loki’s eyes widened as the blood followed the axe’s trajectory, but he immediately tightened his grip around his spear.
"Raaaaaah!"
Lightning buzzed violently around his weapon as Loki roared and swung with all his strength. The spear tore through the incoming blood arc, splitting it cleanly into two separate streams that splattered across the ground on either side of him.
Ka’z snorted disdainfully.
"Hmph!"
He immediately brandished Ashin Grim several times, each movement sending another portion of the blood surrounding him rushing toward the axe. One after another, bloody arcs formed around the weapon before ripping through the air toward Loki with deadly accuracy.
Loki’s expression hardened as he continued retreating, his spear flashing repeatedly as he tore apart each incoming blood attack. Every time he destroyed one, another was already coming toward him, forcing him to give ground while constantly defending himself.
Then Loki’s left foot landed in a puddle. His eyes immediately dropped toward the ground.
"Blood Magic: Blood Spike!"
The blood beneath his foot violently surged upward.
Loki’s face twisted as he immediately pushed his mana through his body and launched himself into the air to escape the spikes erupting from the ground. Several bloody spikes shot upward beneath him, narrowly missing his body.
Loki gritted his teeth as a burst of pain shot through his entire leg.
The blood he had stepped into had remained attached to his foot even after he became airborne, and before he could shake it loose, it had condensed into another spike and pierced through his sole of his foot, and stabbing out the surface.
"Pay attention!" Ka’z said, extending his hand toward him.
Dozens of blood needles suddenly formed around Ka’z’s body, floating in the air and orbiting him like a swarm of crimson weapons. His fingers slowly curled into a fist.
Every blood needle shot upward.
They raced toward Loki’s airborne body from multiple directions, forcing him to react while his injured foot continued bleeding.
Without hesitation, Loki stabbed his spear downward and the weapon immediately lit up with flames.
"Tyrant Flames!" he roared.
His body began spinning violently once again as fire erupted around him, forming a blazing vortex that surrounded his entire figure. The blood needles slammed into the flames, several being destroyed instantly by the intense heat while others were deflected away.
Using the fiery vortex as a makeshift shield, Loki continued descending toward Ka’z at tremendous speed, his spear pointed toward the kobold below.
Ka’z stomped his foot against the ground and sent his mana through the earth but nothing happened.
His eyes widened in surprise.
For a brief moment, he looked down at the ground as he tried to understand why his spell had failed. He had used the same technique repeatedly throughout the battle, yet now the earth refused to respond.
He didn’t have time to think about it.
Ka’z immediately jumped to the left as Loki’s burning body crashed down where he had been standing. The spear slammed into the ground, scattering dirt and flames in every direction. Ka’z landed and immediately rolled across the ground before pushing himself back onto his feet.
His axe swung and another bloody arc tore through the air toward Loki.
Loki shifted his weight and sprang upward, spinning rapidly as the attack passed beneath him. He barely avoided the blood blade before twisting his body and descending toward Ka’z, using the momentum of his movement to slam the shaft of his burning spear downward.
Ka’z had already predicted the attack.
He hopped to the left at the last moment, allowing the spear to smash into the ground beside him. Loki’s momentum carried him forward, but he recovered quickly, rolling twice before bouncing back onto his feet.
He immediately tried to stand fully upright but pain exploded through his injured foot.
His body froze for half a second as another blood needle suddenly jetted out from beneath his foot, racing upward toward his jaw. Loki twisted his body violently to the side, forcing himself into an awkward position to avoid the attack. The sudden movement threw off his balance, and he fell backward onto his butt.
Before he could recover, a shadow fell over him. Ka’z was already standing above him.
Ashin Grim was raised high over his head, its blade repeatedly buzzing with blue lightning before returning to normal as the unstable rune pulsed beneath the blood coating the weapon. Ka’z’s expression was cold as he stared down at Loki, both hands gripping the axe as he prepared to bring it down with everything he had.
Loki’s eyes widened as he tried to move but barely managed to raise his spear.
Bam!
Ashin Grim slammed into his shoulder.
The blade tore through flesh and cut deep into his chest, sending blood spraying violently in every direction. Loki’s body jerked beneath the impact as the spear in his hands barely managed to slow the axe’s descent. The force drove him into the ground, and a pained cry escaped his throat.
Ka’z held the axe firmly in place, his expression suddenly twisting into a deep frown.
He ignored the gasps and pained cries coming from the civilians and warriors surrounding them. His attention remained fixed on Ashin Grim. The weapon was buzzing strangely in his hands, the lightning cutter rune flickering repeatedly as though struggling to maintain its power.
Loki noticed it too.
"Your Orthodox magic... Is finally failing you, isn’t it?" Loki chuckled, speaking between heavy gasps. "It seems... You... You are not that special after all."
Blood had stained his lower lip, running from the corner of his mouth down his chin and along his jaw. His breathing was ragged, each breath becoming more difficult as blood continued pouring from the wound in his chest.
Ka’z lowered his gaze toward him, his frown deepening.
Strangely, he felt no satisfaction seeing Loki in this condition. The goblin had fought him with everything he had, but there was something about the expression on his face that made Ka’z’s victory feel heavier than usual.
"You are dying and you have the strength to make jokes?" Ka’z frowned.
Loki chuckled between coughs and slowly shook his head. "I... I am happy... At least I know it all ends with me. My father... My father started this... It’s only fitting as his son, I end it..."
His voice weakened toward the end, but the faint smile remained on his face. Slowly, Loki lifted his trembling hand and reached toward Ashin Grim. His fingers brushed against the blade.
"You... You will keep... You will keep your promise, right?"
Ka’z’s expression remained firm.
"Of course... I’ll not go back on my word." Ka’z said firmly without delay.
Loki stared at him for another moment before slowly nodding. A faint smile appeared across his blood stained face as he finally closed his eyes.
Ka’z pulled the battle axe free from Loki’s shoulder and the goblin’s body immediately lost what little strength remained in it, and he fell backward onto the ground with a heavy thud.
