Chapter 52: Chapter 052: Harsh Reality of Interviews?
"So the rumors of casualties during the interview were true!"
"I feel like dropping out."
"I was not told I would be risking my life in some wacky interviews!"
The auditorium erupted in a flurry of noise.
The Headmaster indulged the prospects for a few moments before tapping his cane on the ground once.
Once more, silence reigned over the youths.
"Listen, children. No one sent you to die off, your parents or whoever your patrons are. Nor do we take pleasure in killing off children in the name of tests. That is not something we stand for." He took out his monocle and placed it on his eye.
"Naturally, your safety is the first of our priorities. Those who are wise will heed the laid-out rules and simple instructions, and fortunately, the number of such morons is not much."
He scanned the entire hall, drilling his gaze into their beings and finally settling on their cores.
The hues of orange-red were most rampant, almost in all of the youths, signifying that most present in the hall were indeed Master Ranks. Although, here and there, the green cores of Adept Ranks, as well as the dim blue of the Novice Ranks, popped out.
The very reason why they had always conducted a core test despite families swearing on the name of the Emperor that their spawns were of the required ranks.
’People just never learn, do they?’ he sighed inwardly.
His gaze fell on Mikael again. A bit deeper this time, into his depths.
There was still nothing. Overall, his aura bordered around the Master Rank and the Grandmaster Rank, and if he was correct about who released the aura minutes ago, the aura had subtly flared up to Sage! Albeit for just a second.
"Duke Alan, just who is this young man and what does he mean to you?"
Another tap of the cane brought back quiet as the murmurs slowly began rising.
"No more questions. We go straight to the first part of the entrance: the tests. The core test shall come after the tests have been written."
A magic circle appeared at the tip of his fingers.
The rows of seats began moving shortly, taking up a new formation. The seats that were unoccupied vanished into the ground, while desks sprang up before the prospects.
On the desk were a book, a quill, an inkpot, and a question paper.
"Hush, children. Relax, this test is to test your basic knowledge of mana, magic spells, runes, and arrays. They are easy enough for even a well-bred seven-year-old to answer. The time limit is an hour and thirty-five minutes. It is imperative to note that cheating results in immediate expulsion from the academy grounds and your name entering our black book. Now... start."
Moments later, the air carried the faint metallic scent of ink, that sharp, dry aroma every noble-born had grown up around.
The steady rustle of tips meeting paper filled the hall, quills scratching, pages turning, quiet murmurs, and suppressed coughs.
For all the tension, Mikael seemed detached. His eyes only moved to canvas the question paper, half-lidded and indifferent.
After looking at the questions, he leaned back into his seat and closed his eyes. This action caught the Headmaster’s attention one more time.
"He either cares less for the clear questions, or he does not know the answers." He shrugged.
The test was not really all that important anyway. There were much more important things in the world, much more than perfect grades.
When the bell chimed softly, signaling the end of the written test, Mikael had not moved an inch from his reclined position.
As Miriselle had turned in her book to the Student Council, she subtly checked Mikael’s.
It was as they had received it — untouched.
"You do know you wrote nothing, right?"
An eye flicked open.
"Big deal."
"Irina, Dylan, see to the test."
"Yes, Headmaster."
"Audry, you are in charge."
"Yes, Sir."
He turned back to the prospects.
"Now, we will call out, or rather, show you the dorm assignments. The five students here will guide you to your respective dorms and answer any questions you might have. Now, for the activities for the rest of the day... The time now reads twenty minutes to one in the PM. Two hours should be enough to settle into your assigned dorm. Lunch comes up at two, after which we shall have free time till four in the evening. By four, we shall conduct both core and affinity testing, as well as announce teams for tomorrow’s test. The whole process should be done at around seven. Bath time lasts an hour, and dinner is by eight, after which comes night prayers. Free time follows, and lights out is by ten thirty. Any questions you have will be answered by the Student Council here anytime, so do not hesitate to seek them out. Make sure you get a bit familiar with the school; it might help sometime in the future."
He paused, noticing that many of the prospects were visibly distressed, looking for where to write these pieces of information down.
"Don’t worry, there are notice boards all around the school." He chuckled.
"That will be all for now. Good luck, children. And for those who do not know me, I am the Headmaster, Malcius."
His form dissipated into a puff of smoke that vanished as soon as it appeared.
Overhead, a large projection appeared, and the dorm allocation appeared on the screen.
The girls had two buildings, whilst the boys had just one.
Mikael caught sight of his name.
St. Nicholas, North Wing, Room 12-B. Underneath his name was none other than his roommate’s name, not that he cared about who they were.
"Mikael," a voice called out.
Seeing the face, Mikael’s detached attitude slipped away.
"Isabella." His smile curved his lips. "Good to see you. How many days has it been since we last met? Three?"
He had left the Limnors days before the interview and headed to the academy. The prospect of a trap being set here for him had bugged Mikael a bit. However, he couldn’t get close enough to discover anything meaningful.
The barrier was quite strong, and going through it would most likely alert somebody. Since this was the most prestigious academy of the human race, and there were rumors of a Half Deity being in town, it would be sheer foolishness to poke anyhow.
Sage Ranks could put him down, not to mention Archsage. Talk less of a Half Deity. And who knows what dying in mortal frame would do to him?
"You truly came," the owner of the voice replied.
"Wouldn’t miss it."
She turned to the blue-haired girl friend seated beside Mikael.
"Good afternoon, Miss Cryovia, yes? I am Isabella Von Limnor," she greeted her with a warm smile.
"Good afternoon, Miss Limnor. A pleasure to meet you."
"Please, the honor is all mine."
"Ladies, gentlemen," a voice resonated across the hall. "Please proceed to the courtyard so you can be shown to your rooms."
"Where is your room, Isabella?" Mikael asked, catching up to the already leaving duo.
"Saint Cecelia, East Wing, Room 3-A."
"3-A. That’s the same with me, now I remember. We are roommates, Miss Limnor. A pleasant surprise," Miriselle chimed in.
"True, Miss Cryovia."
"Please, call me Miri."
"Isabella."
Mikael grinned at Miriselle.
"Miri, the little squirrel with claws."
"I am not that small, Mikael."
"You knew each other prior to today?" Isabella asked.
"Yes, we actually met in the Greenwood and..."
