God From The Abyss

Chapter 53 - 053: Comfortable?

Chapter 53: Chapter 053: Comfortable?

"Ladies to this side, gentlemen to the other side."

The courtyard was buzzing faintly with conversation as the prospects, already having formed groups, chatted away.

Mikael stood by one of the fountains, eyes half-closed. The afternoon sun was not lenient with its heat.

He felt someone come up beside him before they even spoke.

"You look like you could fall asleep even when standing. I am quite envious," came a voice, casual and warm.

Mikael turned slightly.

The boy was his age, maybe a tad bit younger. Bright yellow-golden hair, almost like a certain person from the Imperial Merchant Office. Maybe they were related. Even their eyes were the same emerald, just that this boy’s were much friendlier and kinder compared to the cold, deathly state of Lloyd’s.

"Leon Dawnshire," the boy said, sticking out a hand.

Mikael blinked at the offered hand before shaking it, which he did so loosely.

"Mikael."

’Dawnshire? Are they distant relatives? I never did inquire about Lloyd’s family name. Not that it’ll be particularly useful to me.....’

"Just Mikael?"

"Yes."

Leon chuckled. "Mystery man. Great. Rooming with you will be fun, then."

Mikael’s brow twitched slightly.

"Rooming?"

"Yes. We are dorm partners. North Wing, Room 12-B. Seeing as there is only one Saint Nicholaus, surely I can’t be wrong. Lucky us."

Mikael only shrugged and turned away.

A voice rang out.

"Let us proceed."

********

"He’s already inside the school, and the gates have long been closed."

"Bullocks! The school’s defensive arrays and defense mechanisms won’t let an ant through without alerting somebody."

"So we’ll fall back for now."

"Of course, you dick for brains."

"Do we return?"

"Na. Interview’s only for a few days."

* * * * * *

St. Nicholas Dormitory was quite large, an elegant stone building with sweeping arches.

Inside, Room 12-B was simple and spacious. Twin beds, two desks, a crystal lamp suspended overhead which matched the dim yellow paint of the walls, a wardrobe filled with clothes, and a window that overlooked the courtyard.

Leon dropped his bags on one bed and flopped down with a content sigh.

"Feels good to be here, doesn’t it? It’s almost like we’re already students at this great academy."

Mikael flopped down on the other bed.

"This place... is it that great to celebrate and remember? Everyone seems to completely adore it..."

"Of course. In the ranking of best academies, both in facilities and in terms of educational systems, I heard it is second only to the top academy in the Eleven Lands. That is almost like saying it is the second-best academy in the world. Among all five continents: Elyria, Tenor, Dwargon, Theria, and even the Vampiric Iceland!"

"Really? Then this place is bound to be an interesting place. Any other notable features I should know?"

"You must be new to the capital city, huh, Mikael?"

"Well, I guess so. So..."

"Oh, yes. A quick history, if I may. The Silver Arcane was founded about four hundred years ago by Emperor Maximus III.

"Over the centuries, it has produced countless officers, knights, and generals. All the Imperial bloodline houses, except those who are unawakened, study here too. The Great Houses, amongst other nobles, all attended here.

"Legends and rumors dare say that the academy was built above an object that is above the Relic grade! People even say it fell from the Celestial realm, from the domain of the Goddess Aurora: Heaven!"

At the mention of the name of the goddess, Mikael sighed, waving Leon to stop talking. He laid down atop the bed and turned to face the wall.

When the time for the core and affinity testing came, the ferocity of the fiery sun had drastically reduced to pleasant warmness.

The auditorium buzzed with life.

The evaluation area was split into groups for this round of affinity assessment.

Rows of crystal pillars pulsed faintly. Students lined up, one after another, placing their hands on the crystals as the instructors and professors recorded readings.

The crystals had two segments. One part measured core ranks; the other measured affinities: Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Ice, Lightning, Light, and Shadow.

When Mikael’s turn came, a hush fell. He felt countless gazes on his back.

He placed his hand on the crystal while analyzing its components and quickly deducing how they worked.

The first segment of the crystal turned gold, albeit very dim. It looked almost white; like his core never fully let go of both the Master and Grandmaster Ranks, while the other segment displayed colorful, chaotic veins that shifted erratically.

The instructor raised his head, visibly shocked and excited.

"Second prismatic in terms of elements! With the exception of Space Time affinity, he has all! Incredible."

"Wow, he has an affinity for almost all elements!"

"I thought the most anyone could have was four. How can people have all of them?"

"This world’s unfair," a girl with just the Fire affinity whispered, clearly envious of his talent, as were so many others, instructors included.

Mikael removed his hand. He nodded at Isabella and Miri, and walked away.

When he got to the courtyard, he frowned.

"Something here is weakening me. Like it’s repressing my celestial part. Open Gate."

The pattern in his eyes changed to an unnatural cross as he channeled celestial energy into them.

He gazed down at the foundations of the school.

"I thought so."

Truly, they held a secret that did not allow him to see through them.

"Maybe because I’m not yet at full strength. Close the Gate."

His eyes returned to normal.

He groaned as an intense headache hit him instantly. He also pulled out a handkerchief to wipe his bloodied nose.

"Wish I found a stronger body or at least tempered this one to be stronger. Can’t even channel celestial energy for a little while without risking disintegration," he scoffed.

What would happen if the heavens decided to come after him? As he was now, he wouldn’t last.

Evening settled fully over Silver Arcane.

From the rooftop of the dorm, the city lights afar glittered — faint gold and blues against a deepening indigo sky.

Mikael sat cross-legged on the tiles with a distant gaze while below, the murmur of students was slowly becoming a faded echo.

"Comfortable, isn’t it?" came a calm voice from behind.

Mikael didn’t turn.

"Quite."

"It is surprising, Headmaster Malcius. What brings a man of your caliber here?"
