Chapter 54: Chapter 054: The Second Day.
The old man stepped forward until he stood beside Mikael.
His dressing was simple, but it did not reduce the faint aura around him, and still showed his unshakable authority.
"If I am not mistaken, you must be the wonder kid that created the Rank Breaker," Malcius began, lowering himself to sit beside Mikael.
"So... which race did you come from, and what is your aim in Tenor?"
A tyrannical aura flared, one that caused the roof tiles to quake as though they would cave in!
"Depending on your answer, I might have to kill you right here, right now, boy. No hard feelings."
Mikael didn’t react. The Headmaster was objectively stronger than whoever he had met in the few weeks since his incarnation in this world. Stronger than Duke Alan, the Duchess, the General from Adrian’s hometown — all of them.
However, his aura pulsed once — sharp, faint, slicing through the pressure as if though it were something physical.
Deep down in himself, his connection to the Cosmic Gate was open, as wide as he could manage.
"Interesting, lad. Most wouldn’t stay composed before me. This is the first time someone ever dared flex before me." The Headmaster laughed warmly as his aura faded away.
"Well... I’ve dealt with worse." Mikael leaned back, eyes now focused on the night sky.
The last embers of daylight had faded beyond the horizon, leaving the world bathed in moonlight and the faint glow of stars in the air, in addition to the city’s night lights.
"You don’t need to worry," Mikael said.
"I’m not your foe."
"Not yet, perhaps. There is always uncertainty associated with the future."
That earned a quiet chuckle.
"You know, for someone so powerful, you are quite cautious, Headmaster Malcius."
"A good thing, lad. Keeps people alive. How do you think I managed to survive two wars and live to such an old age?"
"You don’t look that old to me."
"Youths and their sweet tongues. Hahaha."
The silence that passed between them was heavy, but it carried a quiet understanding. A quiet recognition of what the other was probably capable of.
Finally, the elder spoke in a tone now softened.
"Whatever your goal is, do not disturb the balance nor the serenity of this place. There are things even someone like you would be better off not knowing, let alone touching."
"Balance. You have no idea just how much I hate that word, Headmaster."
He rose slowly, stretching and stepping toward the edge.
"Don’t worry, Headmaster. I’m not here to bring about chaos. You humans already have your hands full with those false, red-skinned ’demons’ anyways. Might as well be compassionate for now."
Malcius’ eyes narrowed slightly, but before he could speak, Mikael had already vanished from the spot.
The old man stood alone for a while. The night breeze tugged at his robe. A quiet sigh escaped him.
’I believe I have encountered our wonder kid. I also believe he is not of human origin, though, for now, he poses me no threat. For now, in his own words.’ Malcius spoke in his mind.
"That is good. Be sure to relay any of his secrets, spells, affinities, and race. His origin if you find it out. Anything will help."
"But of course."
The transmission ceased.
The next morning.
Across the academy’s vast courtyard, hundreds of students gathered, dressed in ash sweat suits.
Overhead, the banners of the Silver Arcane Academy fluttered lazily in the gentle morning breeze.
An instructor’s voice echoed through the air, amplified by a spell.
"Good morning, children. Today marks your second test — Survival, and I am the proctor for this trial, Andrews."
The murmurs stopped. Even the breeze seemed to still.
"You will all be sent into a separate, dimensional field, an ancient ruin where Ravagers and mana run wild. You will form teams of five, as opposed to the six announced yesterday.
"You will hunt, defend, SURVIVE, and return. Each team will be required to acquire a certain amount of crystals. Protect your wins, steal others’, if you can. The win condition is your survival, though ranking will also depend on a few things. The higher the number of crystals a team gets, the higher their ranking and the higher their chance of being recruited... sorry, admitted.
"If you lose a teammate, the whole team fails. Of course, the instructors will be all around you, but if you are saved, you and your team will be deemed to have forfeited and shall be sent away. And no, we shall not let anyone die."
Whispers began to bubble — signs of excitement, anxiety, and fear.
Mikael stood among them, half-listening. He looked every bit the picture of unbothered grace — hands tucked in pockets, loose shoulders, his white hair catching the morning light like white fire.
The others gave him occasional side glances, some out of curiosity, some out of infatuation, and some out of pure irritation and annoyance.
"You can choose who you want your teammates to be, though we’d advise to make sure you have close-ranged, mid-ranged, and long-ranged capabilities so as to fare well. And you will spend six hours there."
"Six hours?"
"This will be quite easy?"
"And here I was, getting worried for no reason."
"Eh," the instructor’s voice rang out. "I forgot to mention, time flows much more slowly in that dimension. Six hours here is equivalent to a full day — 24 hours over there."
"But, sir, how do we get basic necessities — shelter, food?" a prospect asked.
"Good question. But no answer. Pick your teammates. You leave in thirty minutes. That is all."
The instructor left the podium.
At once, the neat ranks dissipated as everyone reached out to those they wished to team up with.
Behind Mikael, Leon sighed for the third time.
"Come on, Mikael. Let’s find..."
"Mikael!" A feminine voice called out.
The midnight-blue hair and the light-blue hair were very familiar to the duo.
Isabella and Miriselle.
They all exchanged greetings.
"We got four now. We need just one more..."
"You’re that weirdo from yesterday, right?" A bronze skinned, scarlet-eyed girl clicked her tongue, came up to the group with a wide grin." Oh, and if it isn’t Miss Short Teddy Bear, Miriselle the crybaby. Yo!"
"Alexis! Long time no see."
