Chapter 56: Chapter 056: The Alternate Dimension (2)
The thickness of the mana-charged air began thinning out as time went by. But in its place, the ruins’ entire environment had slowly changed.
The twilight was dimmer, there were heavy rains and thunderstorms in some parts, and the Ravagers were more ferocious, hungrier.
Isabella’s trembling hands pressed against a cracked barrier, each pulse of her spells becoming much weaker than the last.
"I can’t keep this up much longer, Alexis."
Alexis gritted her teeth. Blood ran down her arm as she deflected another wolf-type Ravager.
"Where the hell is that guy? I’ll kill him myself, I swear to the Goddess."
"You mean Mikael?" Leon spat out blood, his voice low with fatigue and a bit of annoyance. "Probably dead and having tea with ghosts," he tried joking to lift their morale a bit more.
"I’d advise you don’t think of that as comfort," Isabella said. She fired off a shrapnel-shaped rock at a beast that charged too close to Alexis.
"He’s too strong to have died here."
Miriselle scoffed, albeit not in disbelief. She too knew quite well about Mikael’s strength; she had seen what he was capable of back in the forest.
But why he up and left them was a mystery and was currently a source of disappointment and anger to her.
Just minutes ago, after they had picked out a rest area, they had engaged a horde of Fruit Bears. And new challenges kept coming up, arriving in waves and herds!
A fresh pack of mana beasts charged from the shadows — fur sleek and blood red. The ground groaned and shook as their hooves clattered down hard.
Blood Antelopes!
They had lost count of the number of waves this one was.
"Isabella!!"
"On it! ..... Fortress!"
"Everyone retreat! Into the barrier, now!" Miriselle shouted.
They all entered within the barrier, reinforcing the caster with their mana. At least, whatever they had left within them.
Their Master Rank cores could only do so much, and they had fought a great deal throughout the day, making the singular mistake of not recovering well enough.
"Some test this is. Steal each other’s crystals? We don’t even have enough time to survive these beasts and rest, let alone hunt other students!" Alexis groaned.
A low, guttural rumble rolled through the ruins, making every beast freeze and moan.
From deep within the ruins, the roar came again — low, endless, vast.
Isabella’s face went pale.
"That’s not a normal Ravager."
The Blood Antelopes had scurried away after hearing the roar, giving the team their much-needed breather.
Isabella, now free from multitasking, simply fell to her knees, groaning hard.
Overall, she had basically saved the team during their trying times, putting up barriers and rock defenses that were constantly battered by the beasts they had fought, while still covering weak spots whenever they pushed forward for an attack.
The rest understood her, and so they formed their rest and defensive position around her.
---
The instructors watched from the projections, exchanging glances that said enough.
"I thought the S-class Ravager was not supposed to awaken yet. Inform the Headmaster."
A flash of light appeared immediately. When it dissipated, the Headmaster was in its place.
"Good day."
"Sir, the S-class. Do we go put it down?"
"Let it alone for now. I wanna see how the foolhardy brave ones would handle it. Morgan, prepare the mass exit teleportation array. The moment I say the word, activate it."
"Yes, sir."
---
As the echo of the roar faded, another sound followed, drawing the attention of the team.
Light footsteps that were calm, measured.
They got instantly alert, fearing another team had been observing them and had decided that the time to strike was now. After all, about thirteen hours had passed, so there wasn’t much time to continue playing things safe.
From between two crumbling pillars, a figure walked out. One that made them smile subconsciously despite their still-existing annoyance and anger.
"Tch, damn showoff."
"Language, Alexis. You are a noble."
The familiarity of the silvery-white hair and the pale-white skin was quite a relief. His clothes also appeared untouched by the blood and grime that clung to everyone else.
Mikael!
"Missed me?" he asked lightly with a warm tone.
Alexis gawked, half in rage, half in disbelief. She stabbed her sword down into the ground, met Mikael halfway, and held him by the collar.
"Where the hell were you!?"
" I had something of mine I had to take care of."
"Huh? Does it look like we are here to joke away our time?"
Mikael rolled his eyes.
"Ladies. Always the same, no matter where you meet them." He smirked as the Duchess came up in his mind. His joke however, did not land at all.
"Oi, got a death wish?"
Alexis stood up, visibly livid with anger.
Mikael didn’t seem to care. He glanced at Isabella.
"You good, girl?"
"Yes," she replied weakly.
Mikael nodded, now looking at the surroundings.
Quite the number of wolf and bear corpses and a great number of bulls, too.
Or were they antelopes?
Red fur?
Blood Antelopes.
Pierced by ice, or roasted and some pierced by a weapon.
Oh, the sword.
"You guys did well without me. Why’s Miss Angry over here trying to smite me?"
Alexis finally lost it. She threw her free fist at him, but she stopped midway.
The ground erupted a few feet ahead.
A Troll, its body roughly ten meters tall, rose from the crater.
It roared — a thunderclap that shredded the air.
"Wow, you guys look like you are pretty drained," Mikael joked, earning him a glaring glare from even Miriselle and Leon.
"Fine, fine."
He moved, but his step didn’t touch the ground as he vanished.
He appeared above the Troll and kicked down, sending it face-first to the ground.
Alexis’s eyes widened.
"Hey, Miriselle, he didn’t cast a single spell, did he?"
Her hands were still stuck in their previous positions; one like it was clutching something, the other closed into a fist and raised midair!
Miriselle, who had previously witnessed the abnormal speed and monstrous strength, merely shrugged.
"Who knows."
The Troll rose, visibly enraged as it charged at the people before it.
But it was sent to kiss the ground once more.
"He’s toying with it," Leon laughed, the kind that was so entwined with anger and relief that it was hard to tell each emotion apart.
"This guy is toying with an A-ranked Ravager."
The Troll rose, now frantically looking around to see who had been thrashing it.
Above its shoulders, Mikael stood, hand on his forehead as though looking into the distance.
"What are we looking for, big guy?"
The Troll smacked its shoulder, but the ’pest’ had already disappeared.
"Kill. Kill. Little... things."
A kick to its chest sent it sprawling back a couple of meters into a wall that crumbled upon impact.
Mikael shook his head as his smile widened.
"The mortal realm maybe doesn’t amount to much? Or maybe I have spent most of time here surrounded by their strongest groups?"
