Chapter 55: Chapter 055: The Alternate Dimension.

"It would seem you are acquainted with Lady Cryovia, Lady Alexis..." Leon asked.

"Yeah, Miri and I go way back. Allow me to formally introduce myself. I am Alexis Lithorne, of House Lithorne. A pleasure to make your acquaintance." Alexis bowed slightly.

"I am Isabella Von Limnor, of House Limnor."

"And I am simply Leon Dawnshire." Leon gave a rather deep bow.

"And what’s your name, pretty boy? Or are you the shy type? Not that your ’prank’ yesterday fits that profile," Alexis prodded.

Inwardly, Mikael had already processed what he remembered about the face. It belonged to one of those who had withstood his aura the day before, although it had been greatly weakened. But still, the red hair and brown skin stood proud nonetheless.

"And I thought the scions and spawns of the noble families were always required to use formal speech. I am Mikael. Pleasure to meet you too."

"Thirty minutes are up. All teams should get ready to teleport." The instructor’s voice boomed, just as Alexis was about to respond.

Moments later, a huge white magic circle appeared in the sky as the students were about to be teleported.

Mikael looked at his teammates once more.

"You guys good?"

"Yes."

"Of course."

Alexis scoffed. "None of your business."

Before any could say more, the ground shook. The teleportation spell was activating. The wind grew heavy, thick with a static feel.

Then, with a sound of tearing fabric, the entire courtyard seemed to fold inward.

And the students vanished.

When the students materialized and regained their footing, the scenery before them had completely changed — to ruins being overrun by a thick jungle.

Shattered towers jutted from the earth, each one half-covered by vines growing faintly with azure veins. The air was also thick with mana, charged and heavy, while somewhere far off, something roared — the deep, resonant kind that set instincts on edge.

The instructor’s voice boomed out once more.

"If you previously thought that this world was a mere illusion, I suggest you ditch the idea if you wish to survive. If you also don’t feel like participating later on, tap on the wristband and you will be whisked away immediately. As already established, that would mean you forfeited, alongside your team.

"Good luck."

The voice faded, and all around the exam venue, many looked at the wristbands that had appeared on their wrists with surprise.

Isabella and Leon coughed.

"This mana... it’s so thick. It’s suffocating."

Mikael exhaled softly.

’Great,’ he thought inwardly.

He inhaled.

The mana here was quite pure and in such density that he could swear there were a couple of mana ley lines or veins below the ruins.

"Try getting used to it," was all he offered as advice.

Alexis crouched, scanning the trees.

"We should move. Staying at the landing site is dangerous. This place must be giving off some form of aroma or something, and some Ravagers should already be heading here."

"Agreed," Miriselle said.

They moved — cautious, deliberate, quick.

"So," Miriselle began after they had walked a considerable distance, "let us discuss our formation for attack and defense."

"Who needs that?" Mikael asked in genuine curiosity.

"Us." Miriselle glared at him. "The Ravagers here are unknown foes. We might be strong individually, but..."

"Anyways," Mikael interjected. "I shall join you guys later on. I’ve got a few things to take care of myself."

His form shifted.

"Mikael..."

He had already blitzed off at a speed that was highly uncharacteristic for anyone at the Master Rank!

"That brat thinks he’s some kind of hotshot."

A low growl came from behind, causing the group to freeze and turn.

From the shattered columns, a creature slinked forward — a Ravager; a water wolf. Its body, covered in light-blue fur, shimmered like water. Its fangs dripped with saliva, and its eyes were red as molten steel.

One became three.

Then seven.

"Isabella, Leon, what are your affinities?"

"Earth."

"Light and fire for me, Lady Cryovia."

"Alexis, any new affinity?"

"Nope, still the same. Fire and Lightning."

She drew out a glowing sword with a jade blade.

"I will be the melee fighter. Miriselle, you and Leon be the mid-range, while Isabella will be our long-ranger. Isabella, I hope you have some offensive spells?"

"Yes."

Isabella muttered, "Heed the words of those who pray to you, O spirits that do roam the lands, and from the attacks of my foes, defend me. Rock Fortress."

A barrier made of earth rose around her, leaving just enough room for her to attack.

"You can go all out. I have your backs!"

Alexis growled, visibly excited.

"Good girl."

The first wolf lunged.

And she moved, charging straight up. At her feet, crackles of lightning flashed in response to the muttering of a spell, boosting her speed.

Her first slash saw the forelimbs of the beast drop to the ground.

---

Mikael sent out ripples of his energy that spread up to three kilometers.

There was nothing worthwhile here.

"Summon! Ragnarok."

The fabric of reality tore before him as the otherworldly scythe floated out of the tear.

"Been a while, my good friend," Mikael muttered, catching it.

"Now, I think this spot is it."

He struck the scythe deep into the ground.

"Be sure to not take ’all’ of it."

---

Over the next few hours, the ruins became a tense battlefield.

Teams had been scattered through the ancient streets filled with columns and statues that still hummed faintly.

Flashes of mana streaked nearby as spellcasters unleashed volleys of fire, wind, earth, and ice. Here and there, clouds of lightning and bangs of light flashed and persisted, while clashes rang from alleys where sword users clashed with much thicker-skinned Ravagers.

And through it all, Mikael’s group had their own share of worries, cutting a path for themselves.

The crystals could only be obtained from certain Ravagers and from certain locations that popped up randomly and were also heavily guarded.

"This year’s candidates are not quite impressive," an instructor groaned as she set her teacup down on the table.

They were watching all the teams on projected screens. Already, a couple of the prospects had given up or been saved by other instructors.

"How many showed up for the interviews, Tony?"

"A little above four hundred, ma’am."

She hummed, a hint of surprise all over her face.

"That’s rather large. Quite the number."

Somewhere at the furthest outreaches of the ruins, Mikael stood atop a fallen statue.

Below him, Ragnarok pulsed as it absorbed mana from the ley lines at a ridiculous speed.

The moment he had stepped into this dimension, the idea had struck.

The mana here was in its purest, most natural state, still inferior to celestial energy but still...

Why would he leave it alone when he needed to consolidate his foundation in preparation for his ascension back into the Celestial Realm?

Four more hours later, and Ragnarok was not even done absorbing.

Mikael could only smile faintly.

Overhead, the roar from the time they entered sounded again.

"Oh, calm your nerves. I’m coming."
