When a life’s evolutionary journey reaches its end, it either evolves or mutates, in reality, these two were fundamentally the same thing, both were changes to the form of life.
The former was normal, changing in a positive direction, however, such evolution couldn’t be accomplished in a single generation, it required generation after generation, across countless long eons, yet the Heavenly Court was still comprised of the exact same bunch of guys.
If they wanted to change immediately, it had to be the latter, ignoring the consequences and beginning to mutate.
The Book Saint froze, looking at Adam in astonishment, he hadn’t expected him to hit the nail on the head so quickly.
"You are incredibly perceptive, yes, when there is no hope left for one’s own body, the way to break through those physical limits is to let the body mutate, forcibly shattering those constraints!"
"I don’t know who in the Heavenly Court came up with this idea, but it quickly spread among them."
"The longer one lives, the more they fear death!"
"Even gods are the same, they are the group that enjoys this world the most, so naturally, they are the least willing to die!"
"I’m not entirely sure how those in the Heavenly Court managed it, but this kind of thing definitely comes with side effects."
"During the mutation process, many gods underwent all sorts of indescribable changes!"
"Various bizarre and eerie creatures continuously appeared within the Heavenly Court, some possessed terrifying and strange abilities, while others were incredibly frail and died right after being born!"
"Even if they succeed, they will still eventually reach their new biological limits again, at that point, they will once again require the help of Source!"
"And that is exactly why the Heavenly Court still needs Source to this day!"
The Book Saint sighed, his eyes full of helplessness. "How pitiful, the entire world has become a breeding bed for the Heavenly Court, used solely to extend the lives of those monsters inside!"
Adam was absolutely horrified, even though he had speculations beforehand, he never imagined it would actually be like this.
"Then what is the deal with this world?" Adam took a deep breath, never mind all that for now. Finding Cecilia was what mattered most, after that, he would figure out a way to invent a particle collider and leave this world behind.
"What do you think determines the amount of Source?" The Book Saint looked at Adam as if looking at a prized pupil, the corners of his mouth constantly turning up.
Feeling the Book Saint’s gaze, Adam felt like a student sitting in class.
"Senior Book Saint, didn’t you just explain it? The more physical limits a living creature breaks through, the more Source it accumulates, and the more Source it requires for replenishment!"
"Exactly. Then at what point do the creatures of this entire world experience a peak period of breaking through their physical limits?" the Book Saint asked again.
"Naturally, during the Heaven and Earth Upheavals!"
"Good, but when there are no Upheavals, the Source content within the living creatures across the myriad worlds isn’t very high, how does the Heavenly Court acquire Source?"
"If they lack quality, they make up for it in quantity..." Adam paused slightly.
The living beings across the myriad worlds existed in a delicate balance, if massive, indiscriminate slaughter occurred, that balance would shatter, the only remaining method was to specifically create a world to serve as a stable supplier of Source.
And that supplier was the very world he was currently in.
Adam took a deep breath, he never imagined this world was built on such a cruel premise.
"This world is nothing but a stable resource reservoir for the Heavenly Court!" the Book Saint said coldly.
"From the moment they began to mutate, the Heavenly Court had everything planned out, they needed a world that could continuously provide an endless supply of Source!"
"Even outside the periods of Heaven and Earth Upheavals, they needed such a world to help them survive the long, drawn-out eons!"
Adam fell silent, he knew leaving this place would be incredibly difficult.
If the existence of this world leaked out, it would be a devastating blow to the Heavenly Court, losing credibility across the myriad worlds would be getting off lightly, it was entirely possible the realms would unite to overthrow their rule, therefore, the Heavenly Court couldn’t allow even the slightest rumor to slip out.
No wonder the Book Saint said even he couldn’t break through the world barrier, the Heavenly Court had definitely reinforced it, if not for the spatial turbulence, Adam probably never would have entered this world in his entire life.
"This world really is just one giant pig farm." Adam sighed, the Heavenly Court, supposed to be the guardian deity of the myriad worlds, turned out to be the ultimate evil.
"How does the Heavenly Court actually harvest the Source in this world?" Adam hadn’t noticed anything unusual during his journey here.
"You must have seen those emissaries by now, that so-called Innate Talent Spirit Stone in their hands doesn’t actually test for cultivation talent, it measures the concentration of Source within a person!" the Book Saint explained.
"Through trial and error over countless years, the Heavenly Court discovered that certain humans possess a significantly higher concentration of Source than ordinary people!"
"And for such humans to appear, they must be in a relatively free and peaceful environment, ideally under circumstances that are impoverished yet filled with hope!"
The Book Saint paused, and Adam picked up the thought. "So the Heavenly Court fabricated a lie? That as long as they are chosen by the Lord Emissary, they can escape their impoverished lives!"
"Yes, exactly!" The Book Saint nodded, not taking offense at Adam interrupting him.
Adam sat back in his chair, picked up his teacup, and downed it in a single gulp, at this moment, he didn’t even know how to process this revelation.
"Senior Book Saint, I have one more very important question, will this current Heaven and Earth Upheaval be the final one?"
The Book Saint’s pupils contracted slightly, looking at Adam in astonishment. "You even managed to guess that?"
"I merely deduced it from a few clues, so, what is the Heavenly Court’s ultimate objective?" Adam’s tone was flat, he knew the Heavenly Court was definitely plotting something massive!
