Neo-Edo.
The city of eternal neon, high-grade mana nets, and buried bodies.
The sky above was an ugly, bruised purple.
Choked by endless industrial smog and the low, brain-melting hum of city-wide shields.
To anyone else, it was a dystopia suffocating under corporate greed.
But for Kaelen Cross?
It was the most beautiful damn thing he had ever laid eyes on in last ten years.
BZZZZTโBOOOOM!
The colossal, sapphire-blue pillar of the Orbital Strike finally faded into the ether.
Leaving behind a deafening, high-pitched ringing that made the teeth ache.
Silence rushed back in.
A heavy, suffocating silence that tasted like copper and ash.
White-hot flakes of vaporized titanium drifted down from the upper atmosphere.
Pulverized concrete mixed with the debris, falling slow and heavy.
Like glowing, radioactive snow.
Kael stood dead center.
Right in the middle of a massive, smoking crater.
A crater that, just ten minutes ago, used to be the Vanguard Guild's pristine, million-credit marble courtyard.
The heavy, rusted combat boots on his feet were caked in dried black blood and crusty grime.
Boots that had waded through a decade of absolute, unrelenting abyssal mud.
Were finally resting on the surface of Earth.
The air around him smelled violently of ozone, burning synthetic plastic, and ionized plasma.
It was toxic. It was foul.
It was home.
He closed his eyes and took a slow, deep breath.
Letting the toxic, polluted city air fill his heavily scarred lungs.
"Fucking finally," Kael whispered, his gravelly voice barely audible over the crackling flames of the ruined courtyard.
Behind him, the spatial fabric violently warped with a sickening rip.
Vespera materialized straight out of his shadow.
Her leathery obsidian wings unfurled with a sharp, snapping sound that cut through the crackling flames.
She hovered three feet off the scorched earth, her luminescent crimson eyes scanning the towering, glittering skyscrapers of Neo-Edo with a look of utter, aristocratic disgust.
"This is your precious world?" Vespera sneered, her long, segmented tail lazily swatting away a falling chunk of burning debris.
"It reeks of weak magic and corporate cowardice," the Succubus noted, wrinkling her flawless pale nose.
"I expected more... fire. More screams."

"Give it five minutes," Kael replied coldly, his eyes fixed on the horizon.
"You'll be begging for earplugs."
Vespera let out a low, melodic purr, leaning slightly closer to his shoulder.
"You really know how to tempt a demon, human. Now I'm looking forward to it even more."
"Get too excited and I'll use your tail as a bowstring," Kael muttered, a faint, humorless smirk touching his lips.
Before Vespera could snap a witty retort, the heavy, metallic crunch of boots on crushed glass broke the silence.
To Kael's right, Seraphina stepped out of the smoking crater.
The Fallen Valkyrie didn't look up at the towering skyscrapers.
She didn't look at the bruised purple sky.
Her dull, hollow golden eyes were locked onto the massive, glowing blue emblem of the Vanguard Guild projected on the side of the Aegis Spire.
The crest of the very men who had lobotomized her, turning a proud warrior into a mindless tool.
Her scarred hands gripped the hilt of her un-enchanted broadsword so tightly her knuckles turned bone-white beneath layers of grime.
She was trembling.
It wasn't fear.
It was an adrenaline spike so massive it was threatening to tear her newly un-suppressed heart completely in half.
Her jagged, corrupted golden aura flared around her, pulsing with violent streaks of pitch-black malice.
"They're still broadcasting," Seraphina whispered, her voice sounding like grinding stones.
"They're still smiling."
"Then let's wipe that smile off their screens," Vespera purred, her crimson eyes glinting with wicked amusement as she glanced at the trembling Valkyrie.
"Careful, holy bird. Don't shatter your sword before we even reach the lobby."
"Shut up, demon," Seraphina spat, her chest heaving as dark energy leaked from her armor joints.
"I'll carve you into pieces the second this is over."
"Ooh, threats. I'm shaking," Vespera laughed, though her wings tensed into a defensive arch.
"Sera," Kael grunted, finally cutting them off without looking back.
"Keep your head in the game. We're not ghosts yet."
Seraphina ground her teeth, forcing a ragged, burning exhale past her lips.
She slammed the tip of her heavy broadsword into the scorched marble, anchoring herself against the psychic backlash of her own rage.
"I'm ready," she growled, her golden eyes burning with a terrifying, singular focus.
She didn't have to wait long.

WEE-WOO. WEE-WOO.
The blaring, ear-piercing shriek of Vanguard automated sirens suddenly shattered the quiet of the night.
From the far end of the courtyard, out of the heavy, billowing smoke, a platoon of Vanguard Enforcers materialized.
Thirty men.
They were the elite perimeter guard of the Aegis Spire.
They wore pristine, silver-and-blue enchanted plate armor, carrying high-cycle mana-rifles equipped with lethal thermal optics.
They moved in a textbook tactical wedge, spreading out to surround the crater.
They expected to find a monster. A stray Behemoth that had somehow breached the gates.
Instead, they found a nightmare.
The Platoon Captain, a young, arrogant noble from the Upper Spire, lowered his rifle as the smoke cleared around the crater.
His eyes locked onto the towering, scarred man holding a massive, rusted cosmic greatbow.
The Captain froze.
His brain completely short-circuited.
Every single cadet in the Vanguard Academy was forced to memorize the faces of the founding heroes.
He knew the scars. He knew the silver eyes. He knew the legend.
"No... it can't be..." the Captain whispered, the color draining from his face so fast he looked like a corpse.
"It's him. It's the Phantom."
