His pupils tightened.

[The hilt of the Heavenly Resentment Demonic Sword was forged by the former Demon Ancestor Nythera using her self-created Bone-Severing Secret Technique, she extracted a section of her own spine and tempered the bone into the hilt.]

[From the moment of its making, Nythera embedded a restriction of her own design inside that bone.]

[Rest assured, Master, the Heavenly Resentment Demonic Sword will never harm its master in body or soul.]

[Function of the restriction: upon her death, a fragment of her remnant soul carrying her complete memories withdraws into the sword and enters indefinite sleep.]

[Shielded by the restriction, the sleeping remnant soul suppresses all spiritual fluctuation and reads as dead matter, conventional sensing cannot find it.]

[When an individual forms a blood contract with the Heavenly Resentment Demonic Sword and restores its broken blade, the threshold is met and Nythera’s remnant soul awakens.]

[On awakening, that soul converts into the weapon spirit and resurrects using the blade as her new vessel.]

Soren dismissed the interface without a word.

He ran his thumb over the crimson gemstone, warm as jade under his skin.

A thin smile pulled at his mouth.

Nythera, what an interesting woman, she built herself a way back before she ever needed one, and hid it where nobody would look, about what you’d expect from an Upper-Tier Demon Ancestor.

He flicked his fingers and put the sword away.

Then he looked toward the corner where the Earth Demon Ancestor lay against the wall.

The old monster’s face was chalk, his expression past wretched and into something worse.

He looked like a corpse left soaking in cold water for three days.

Soren couldn’t pick up a single trace of demonic energy off him, even the density of his demon soul had been drained past half.

The sword’s appetite was an ugly thing, the results weren’t open to argument.

It was a pity, in a way.

Since reaching Middle-Tier Demon Ancestor, Soren’s strength had outrun anything on the continent worth calling an opponent.

Not one soul had forced him to draw that blade to make up the difference.

A few minutes ago, with a hostage in the room, he hadn’t had the luxury of choosing.

He had thrown it like a spear.

While the teleportation formation was still carrying him and Victoria through, his perception had already reached the far end and mapped the hall.

A bolt of raw demonic energy fired mid-transit would have been dragged off course by turbulence inside the vortex, it would have missed.

The Heavenly Resentment Demonic Sword was a physical artifact of the highest tier, turbulence meant nothing to it.

"Earth Demon Ancestor! The pill! Swallow it!"

The Heaven Demon Ancestor was already moving as he shouted.

He pulled two dark pills wrapped in black miasma out of his storage.

One he threw across the hall.

The other he tossed into his own mouth.

Drained of nearly everything by the sword, the Earth Demon Ancestor couldn’t even force his own spatial storage open.

He saw the pill coming and tracked it the whole way.

His body simply refused to answer at the speed his mind demanded, he lurched forward with everything left in him, he hit the stone floor, he came up half a second short.

The pill sailed past his fingers.

It struck the floor and went clattering across the stone.

Dignity abandoned, the Earth Demon Ancestor scrambled after it on hands and knees.

His fingertips were a breath from closing on it.

Victoria stepped out of empty air, her lovely face held nothing at all, the scythe came down.

Blood sprayed up the dark wall in a sheet.

This time it was the Earth Demon Ancestor’s head that went rolling and clattering across the stone.

Clang!

Without looking down, Victoria flicked the scythe upward.

The curved tip caught the rolling head and lifted it high on the point.

She aimed it at the Heaven Demon Ancestor.

Her free hand reached across the hall and gave a small pull.

The pill flew into her palm.

Holding it between two slim fingers, she caught what came off it, something venomous, boring straight for the marrow.

She took no chances.

She wrapped it in a thick layer of her own demonic energy and floated it over to Soren’s hand.

The Heaven Demon Ancestor already had his pill in his mouth, he hadn’t swallowed yet when his comrade was beheaded in front of him.

He stared at the head hanging from the scythe.

Both lips shook.

Seeing him scared witless enough to forget to swallow, Victoria laughed, low and delighted.

She came at him like a streak of black lightning.

The silhouette swelled to fill his vision, and the Heaven Demon Ancestor woke up a fraction of a second before the blade reached his throat.

He gulped the pill down, a grayish-white film sealed over him from scalp to boots.

It worked exactly like Cecilia’s forbidden techniques, his spiritual fluctuations flattened, and he was gone.

Victoria’s slash went through empty air. She let out one small gasp of surprise and pulled back.

She retreated to Soren and Celeste.

"Celeste, ho hide in my pocket dimension for now."

"Mm, okay!"

Soren waved his hand and sent her in.

He hesitated a moment, then scooped up Cecilia, unconscious and burned to a charred ruin by the black flames, and threw her in after.

Soren shut his left eye and opened it again.

The blood-red demonic pattern surfaced in his pupil, sharp as cut glass.

Wherever his line of sight fell, nothing under heaven stayed hidden.

That eye held powers he hadn’t finished exploring himself.

Even an assassin like Cecilia, wrapped in Immemorial forbidden techniques with her aura and coordinates erased, could be dragged out of the dark without effort.

The pill the Heaven Demon Ancestor swallowed was a high-tier forbidden pill, no question, for a short window it granted the same absolute concealment Cecilia used.

Any ordinary cultivator facing an opponent who vanished like that would be left blind and swinging at air.

For Soren, whether the old monster swallowed the thing or not made no difference worth measuring.

His gaze swept calmly across the interior of the stronghold.

One pass was all it took.

He had the Heaven Demon Ancestor pinned down in the far corner of the cavern.

The invisible old monster was creeping toward his comrade’s headless body.

Soren huffed out a laugh at that.
