"Strictly speaking there isn’t much daylight between them and rats, is there?"
He noticed the figure pinned to the wall.
"Oh? Isn’t that Cecilia? Look at the state of her, shoulder skewered, blood essence burning off in demonic fire."
The woman looked over. "At this rate her body won’t last as long as a stick of incense, should I save her?"
The man sneered. "Save her? Why the hell would we save her? Throw more fuel on it."
Cecilia turned her head through the pain and stared at the pair strolling past her, pupils shaking hard enough to blur what she was looking at.
Soren, and his primary wife, Victoria.
Listening to them talk, something colder than the flames settled into her chest, the fire eating her flesh stopped feeling like the worst thing in the room.
Soren, are those human words coming out of your mouth? Throw more fuel on it?
Victoria never wasted motion.
The instant his words landed, she flicked a finger.
Her demonic energy shot across the hall and poured into the black spear through Cecilia’s shoulder.
The two hostile energies inside the shaft twisted and ground against each other, the wound tore wider, the shockwave went through her like a hammer through glass.
Cecilia’s consciousness folded, she fainted where she hung.
"You gave the order, I carried it out." Victoria slid him a sideways look that said don’t you dare pity her.
Soren smiled and waved a hand, she could do as she liked.
He had no shortage of methods and no shortage of cards left to play, even with a woman who had been skin to skin with him, when punishment was what the situation called for, he never hesitated.
"You’re Soren?"
The Heaven Demon Ancestor came out of his shock at last, one trembling finger pointed at him, eyes bulging red.
Then he moved, he lunged for Celeste.
Because he knew exactly how a head-on fight with Soren would end.
What truly unnerved him was the woman.
According to every report his intelligence division had compiled, Victoria was supposed to be an Upper-Tier Demon Emperor.
And yet she stood there radiating the boundless pressure of a Middle-Tier Demon Ancestor.
Impossible, when did the Ancestor Realm get so cheap that anyone can break through whenever they please?
He stopped mid-lunge as it landed.
Cecilia’s report, delivered in this hall not an hour ago.
Soren had handed Victoria his fifty percent share of the stolen continental destiny, five hundred thousand years of accumulated destiny, poured into one woman.
If that hadn’t dragged her into the Ancestor Realm, that would have been the strange thing.
Cecilia was right about him, he does dote on those two women.
His claw stretched out, fingers closing toward Celeste’s throat.
Inches from it.
A war scythe came down.
The edge passed a hair from the swell of Celeste’s chest and missed her by a margin measured in nothing at all.
Pain detonated through the Heaven Demon Ancestor’s skull and blew him backward.
Splat.
His boots had barely scraped to a stop when a severed arm dropped out of the air and hit the floor, the cut end was smooth as polished glass.
He recognized it, it was his.
Air hissed through his teeth as he looked down at his own shoulder.
Gone, taken off clean.
The scythe had come down too fast, the edge so sharp his brain only registered the wound after blood had already started fountaining from the stump.
Victoria sneered, cold and lovely with it.
A flick of her wrist shook blood off the blade, and she laid the heavy shaft across her shoulder like a woman who had done it a thousand times.
"What are you standing around for? Get over here."
"Coming, Big Sister~"
Celeste knew she was safe. With Soren and Victoria both in this hall, there was no version of events where either old monster laid a finger on her.
She trotted over and tucked herself behind Victoria’s back.
Both arms went around Victoria’s waist, and she rubbed her cheek against her elder sister’s spine. "Celeste was so frightened before Big Sister came~"
"Don’t be afraid, while I’m standing here, nobody under heaven touches a hair on your head."
Soren laced his hands behind his head and had to work to keep his mouth straight.
Tsk, is this sisterhood made of anything but plastic? You two were fighting over my body a while back, and there was nothing warm and harmonious about it then.
Whatever.
As the ruler of the back courtyard... ahem, as Grand Mistress of Black Dragon Mountain, Victoria had her own ways of running the household.
He flicked a finger.
The Heavenly Resentment Demonic Sword pulled free of the Earth Demon Ancestor’s chest and came home to his hand.
The old monster slid down the wall and folded onto the floor with a thin groan.
Soren gripped the hilt and watched the crimson gemstone pulse with warm blood-colored light.
From somewhere deep in the back of his mind, laughter started up.
Hehe... hehe... HAHAHA!
Soren’s brows drew together, his consciousness dove into the blade.
The laughter cut off.
Nothing in there felt wrong.
But inside that eye-shaped gemstone in the hilt, he caught the residue of a strange soul fluctuation.
The Heavenly Resentment Demonic Sword had been forged and carried by his predecessor, the former Demon Ancestor Nythera.
By any normal rule, the moment a weapon climbed to Emperor Artifact rank it woke a spirit of its own.
The Heavenly Resentment Sword had been snapped in half during the Immemorial War.
Its spirit collapsed with the blade and scattered into the void.
Now, bound by Soren’s blood contract, the blade had rebuilt its body whole out of the concentrated resentment of the River of Resentment.
And his Ancestor-level demonic energy had been pouring into it ever since.
So if a brand-new weapon spirit had been born just now, there would be nothing unusual about it.
He called up the Strategy Encyclopedia.
The full record of the Heavenly Resentment Demonic Sword unfolded in front of him.
It confirmed the first half of his guess at once, the laughter had come from the sword’s spirit.
Except this spirit wasn’t like other artifact spirits.
It seemed to carry the complete, uncorrupted memories of a whole life.
The life of the former Demon Ancestor Nythera.
Soren read further.
