She couldn’t believe what she had just watched.
The next second she snapped back to herself, both knees hit the ground, she didn’t dare raise her head.
"Cecilia deserves death!"
"Cecilia accepts punishment!"
"It was my negligence!"
"Soren used me!"
"Uncle, Heaven Demon Ancestor, believe me, I am loyal to the Alliance to the end, I have no rebellion in me."
Bang!
The Earth Demon Ancestor swept his hand out, demonic light flared and hardened into a longspear thick as a wrist.
It punched through Cecilia’s left shoulder.
The force hurled her backward and pinned her to the cavern wall, the black spear sinking deep into stone.
Agony spread from the wound and swallowed the rest of her.
Ancestral demonic energy poured off the shaft and ate into her flesh, corroding as it went.
Her meridians snapped one at a time, inch by inch, and her screams filled the hall.
"Uncle!"
"Heaven Demon Ancestor!"
"I know I was wrong!"
"I’m begging you, don’t destroy my foundation, I still want to serve the Alliance, let me earn it back."
The Earth Demon Ancestor stared at her, his chest heaving like a bellows.
"Soren has this stronghold’s coordinates, he took them off that imprint."
"Directly beneath us is where the Ancient Evil God Tribe lies entombed."
"This time even your uncle can’t save you."
Sweat stood out on Cecilia’s forehead in beads the size of soybeans.
Her demonic meridians went on being crushed and wrung and severed, slowly, nothing hurried about it.
Ten thousand swords working through her organs at once. She wanted to die and wasn’t allowed to.
Not long after, dark demonic flame kindled across her body and settled in to burn through her blood essence.
Her screams climbed several pitches higher.
"Uncle, you’re merciless!"
"I have given the Alliance everything for centuries!"
"Even if I never earned great merit, doesn’t the work itself count?"
"One mistake, one mistake I never meant to make, and you throw me out like a spent chess piece?"
"Why treat me like this?"
"It wasn’t worth it!"
"None of it was worth it!"
The murder in the Earth Demon Ancestor’s eyes drained away, what replaced it was flat and cold and entirely without interest.
"If the Ancient Evil God Tribe rises, every last one of us is an expendable piece."
"Set against immortality and transcendence..."
"...never mind that you’re my niece."
"If you were my own daughter, you would go into the fire the same."
"Cecilia, I had high hopes for you."
"And now you’ve handed us a blunder that could wash away everything we’ve built."
She still held a scrap of hope where her uncle was concerned, or perhaps she simply couldn’t take any more.
"Uncle! I know I was wrong!"
"Nobody walks in here, you have to run more than a dozen formations in the right order!"
"Even if Soren has our coordinates, he cannot get inside!"
"I swear it, within a month I’ll bring back three Upper-Tier Demonic Artifacts to speed the resurrection along!"
The Earth Demon Ancestor snorted and turned away.
Cecilia screamed until her voice broke into a dry rasp.
Her tears steamed off her cheeks before they could fall. She regretted all of it, if she had known it ended like this, why had she ever come back?
"The Alliance doesn’t feed idlers or cripples."
The two of them let the black flame keep eating.
Then both pairs of eyes swung to Celeste.
Celeste pressed her lips together, she backed up several steps without meaning to.
Getting herself taken hostage had been her own plan, argued for and stubbornly insisted upon.
That didn’t make it easier to stand there and watch these two go to work on one of their own.
"Heaven Demon Ancestor, how do we handle this?"
"There’s every chance our coordinates are already out."
"Even if Soren has to crack a dozen formations to reach us, if he leaks what we’re doing to the outside world, we’re finished."
The Heaven Demon Ancestor’s brow furrowed.
"The humans, demons, Spirits and beasts of the other four continents aren’t built like the native tribes of Exalted Continent, different foundations, different comprehension."
"Those lineages have no shortage of Immemorial treasures and inherited techniques, some could crack a teleportation network like ours."
"What matters most is whether Soren used that window to pin down our coordinates."
"If he didn’t, good."
"If he did, we use Celeste to gag him and keep him out of our way."
The Earth Demon Ancestor nodded slowly.
"That’s the only road left."
The Heaven Demon Ancestor gave the order.
"Lock the woman up, I’ll send the intelligence division to watch every move Soren and Black Dragon Mountain make."
The Earth Demon Ancestor started toward Celeste.
"Argh!"
The sound that came out of him was thick and short.
A demonic sword materialized inside the hall and drove clean through his chest from behind.
The impact carried the exact weight of that black spear he had used to pin Cecilia to the wall minutes earlier.
It skewered him and slammed him into the stone face of the cavern, sword qi tearing a jagged spatial fracture open around him.
Gulp.
Gulp.
A crimson gemstone set into the hilt, shaped like an eye, spun wildly.
The blade, laced with pulsing vein-like patterns, flickered in time with the jewel.
A breath later it began drinking, pulling primal energy and blood essence straight out of the Earth Demon Ancestor’s body.
The Heaven Demon Ancestor spun toward the line the sword had come from.
The teleportation formation at the center of the hall rippled with spatial distortion.
Out of the heart of the vortex, two figures walked into the cavern, a man and a woman.
The man was handsome to the point of being hard to look away from, dressed in close-cut black, a heavy demonic cape shifting off his shoulders, each step pushed out a pressure that demanded deference without anger behind it.
The woman beside him was cold and lovely enough to stop the breath in a man’s throat, her neckline plunged, a pair of long legs played hide and seek through the drift of a translucent skirt.
Looking at her, a man finally understood what people meant by an immortal’s face on a devil’s body.
The man glanced around. "So this is the Heavenly Demon Alliance’s main stronghold?"
"Why does it look like a rat hole?"
