Division commanders like Cecilia, along with the Earth Demon Ancestor and the Heaven Demon Ancestor, held clearance for all three.
They moved between One and Two as they pleased, and they alone could reach Headquarters Three, a sanctuary known to a handful of people in the entire world.
So the dozen-odd relay stations were nothing to sneer at.
Every ring in that web locked into the next, and the whole thing was designed to suffocate.
An intruder wouldn’t clear the first stronghold, let alone guess his way to the last.
Every formation in the network gave off identical energy intensity and identical spiritual fluctuation.
The only thing that differed was where they put you.
No amount of spiritual sensing would tell a live formation from a grave.
After a long stretch of travel, Cecilia reached the interior of the first relay stronghold.
Some of the weight came off her shoulders.
Key this one correctly and the thing sitting on her chest since the Endless Demonic Domain could finally be set down.
Her hands moved with the speed of long practice, formation after formation.
She keyed the sequence straight for Headquarters Three.
The buried sanctuary where the Heaven Demon Ancestor and her uncle, the Earth Demon Ancestor, were stationed.
In a sprawling underground palace lit by guttering pale-green spirit lamps, the two of them sat with their heads together over the Alliance’s affairs, faces heavy.
Cecilia stepped out of the void like a ghost.
She brought a thread of fragrance into the stale hall, and both old monsters unknotted their brows at the sight of her.
"Cecilia! Did the assassination succeed?"
The Earth Demon Ancestor came toward her fast, covering five paces in the time of three.
The Heaven Demon Ancestor rose and followed.
Cecilia looked at the two rulers of the Alliance and let a second of silence sit there.
She lowered her head.
"Uncle, Heaven Demon Ancestor."
"Cecilia has failed you."
The eager look on both faces stopped, curdled, and went to ice.
She reported. Everything she had seen while shadowing Soren, start to finish, nothing left out.
By the time she was done, both faces were dark enough to wring water out of, neither spoke for more than a dozen seconds.
"That little bastard Soren has broken through to Middle-Tier Demon Ancestor?"
"And used taboo methods to drag the Immemorial soul of the Nine-Headed Serpent back into the world?"
"Cecilia! Are you certain?"
She lifted her chin and nodded.
"It’s the truth."
"I wouldn’t dare lie to either of you."
"Cecilia understood perfectly well that with my strength and my methods, killing a monster of that caliber was never on the table, staying at his side any longer served no purpose."
"So I had no choice but to come back and discuss what we do next with both of you."
The Heaven Demon Ancestor went quiet, shaking his head slowly.
It took him a while to speak.
"When the Blood Demon Ancestor died at his hands, that brat had only just stepped into Lower-Tier Demon Ancestor."
"Now he’s Middle-Tier, I’m afraid the Earth Demon Ancestor and I together wouldn’t come to half his strength."
"Sending an Upper-Tier Demon Emperor to assassinate a thing like that was asking for the impossible."
"The order on Soren is canceled."
Cecilia bowed her head.
"Uncle, Heaven Demon Ancestor, my trip wasn’t wasted, though."
"Soren is using Black Dragon Mountain as his foundation and expanding hard, Emperors across the continent are defecting to him in waves."
"But the man himself is strange, he fixes on whatever he considers important and leaves everything else to run itself."
"All those defecting Emperors are handled by his two Mistresses."
"Both women carry real weight with him."
"So before I left, I took one of them."
She flicked her wrist and opened her pocket dimension.
Celeste dropped out onto the stone floor of the hall.
The girl’s guard went straight up, she glared at Cecilia with open hatred.
She also had the sense to keep her mouth shut.
"Ancestors, the continent knows this woman as Black Dragon Mountain’s Second Mistress, her name is Celeste."
"Her own strength is nothing, but I watched Soren dote on her with my own eyes."
"We can use her."
"Squeeze him for the resources we still need."
The two old monsters traded one fast glance.
Their demonic energy erupted together and came down over Celeste like a lid on a pot, pressing the air out of her.
Hands waved.
Layer after layer of spatial isolation locked shut around her body.
The barrier looked like a black iron cage welded shut, the Earth Demon Ancestor’s backhand caught Cecilia across the face.
Her lip split, blood ran from the corner of her mouth.
"Cecilia! Have you lost your damn mind?"
"You brought an outsider into Headquarters Three?"
She staggered back, words tumbling out. "Uncle! I searched her from head to foot before I moved her! There was no tracking mark on her anywhere!"
"I sealed her meridians myself, I locked her dantian..."
He flung his wide sleeves out and paced the stone floor, too angry to stand still.
"Caution is what keeps a ship afloat for ten thousand years!"
"The Ancient Evil God Tribe is on the verge of full resurrection!"
"I will not tolerate a single loose variable now!"
"And you told us yourself that Soren has reached Middle-Tier Demon Ancestor!"
"If a creature at that level buried a mark inside this girl, do you think an Upper-Tier Demon Emperor would find it?"
"You’ve disappointed me."
"Commander of our Assassination Corps."
"And you make a mistake a novice wouldn’t."
Cecilia dropped to one knee and kept her head down, speaking fast. "Uncle! From the moment I went back into the Endless Demonic Domain’s palace with him, I never left his side, every word, every movement, every gesture, all of it under my eyes..."
The Heaven Demon Ancestor’s hands folded into a complex seal.
A deep resonance rolled out through the hall, down at the level where foundations sit, he dragged a blood-red demonic imprint out of Celeste’s body, glowing with a dull, sick light, his fist closed and crushed it to dust, his eyes came around to Cecilia carrying murder.
"Cecilia, you dare betray the Heavenly Demon Alliance?"
Cecilia stared at the place where the imprint had hung, her mouth opened and stayed open, lips shaking, her eyes stretched as wide as they would go.
