"A pile of trash like you wants to block my road?"
The charge slammed into empty air, the Spirit Emperors pulled up short, eyes sweeping the horizon, her voice came out of the void from everywhere at once, her body was nowhere.
Every one of them was shaken by methods none of them could name.
Steel needles came whistling out of the deep void.
The barrage drove the whole crowd backward, her voice trailed away, thinner with every word.
"Go crawl back into your mothers’ wombs and cultivate another few centuries."
Teeth ground together, knuckles popped inside clenched fists.
Not one of them had ever imagined it, not in the wildest corner of a dream.
Over a hundred Upper-Tier Spirit Emperors, every one a name in his own right, held off and humiliated by a single girl.
And she stood at the exact same realm they did.
Once the first rush of fury burned itself out, they forced themselves to look at the situation as it actually stood.
None could work out what her technique was built on, not the principle, not the source, nothing.
Charging after her into the deep void would burn time none of them could spare.
Worse, it could walk the whole crowd into a trap she had laid on purpose and was waiting at the end of.
Glances went back and forth, every face had gone the color of old ash.
"Those methods she used, they have to be forbidden techniques out of the Immemorial Era, I’ve heard rumors about things like that."
"I’ve read about them too, old records."
"A hundred of us moved at once and we still couldn’t hold her."
"And she walked off with Black Dragon Mountain’s Second Mistress right under our noses."
"When Demon Ancestor Soren hears about this, is he going to start killing?"
"N-no, surely not? Strictly speaking this has nothing to do with us, if he executes us over it, where’s the justice?"
"You can’t promise he won’t!"
"I’ve heard things about that man."
"They say he’s ruthless, bloodthirsty, and acts on whatever mood takes him."
"Cultivators with nothing special about them get welcomed into his inner circle, powerhouses get blasted into blood mist for no reason anyone can name."
"I heard the first time he ever killed, he wiped out several hundred thousand human cultivators in a single breath."
Somebody sucked in air.
Almost none of them had ever laid eyes on Soren.
He had climbed from Lower-Tier Demon Emperor to Middle-Tier Demon Ancestor in a matter of months.
The man broke through faster than reports about him could travel the continent.
Even the ruling Emperors of the surrounding great domains knew him strictly through hearsay and legends that grew on the retelling.
A few backwater factions still filed him under that cowardly son who threw away his father’s good name.
The Soren living inside each of their heads looked different.
The cold running down each of their spines was identical.
Cecilia, for her part, didn’t dare stop for a heartbeat.
Once clear of the Endless Demonic Domain’s borders she tore open space again and again, leap chained to leap, burning distance as fast as her body could take it.
The whole way she was braced for the same thing.
That Soren would notice, tear a hole in the world, and be standing in front of her when she came out the other side.
She finally halted in a dead mountain range and stood dragging in air, her modest chest rising and falling with it.
Her Immemorial forbidden techniques were miraculous, no question, absolute stealth, spiritual fluctuations flattened to nothing in an instant.
But even ordinary demonic techniques ate demonic energy in bulk.
What the forbidden techniques demanded didn’t need saying.
She had been braiding stealth into back-to-back spatial jumps the entire run toward the Heavenly Demon Alliance.
Her reserves were scraped to the bottom of the barrel.
Cecilia dug a forbidden pill out of her storage and swallowed it whole.
Pills like that hauled a cultivator back to working condition in almost no time.
They also carried vicious side effects, and some of that damage never came back out of the body.
Right now she couldn’t afford to care about later, once her energy steadied, she set off again.
At a particular stretch of the continent she stopped tearing space and dropped to conventional flight.
Punching through the void left rifts and kinetic residue behind it, anyone with real command of spatial techniques could follow a trail like that all the way home.
The Heavenly Demon Alliance did nothing without paranoia, spaced across the continent sat a string of hidden underground relay strongholds.
Inside each one stood several independent teleportation formations, activate the correct formation and you moved one step closer to headquarters, activate the wrong one and you arrived somewhere else entirely.
A sealed pocket dimension with no light, no air, and no door out.
Nor was there only one stronghold, well over a dozen were chained together across the region.
Step out of one, arrive in the next underground station, and the same choice was sitting there waiting again.
The whole thing worked like a spatial labyrinth stacked in layers, and every layer could bury you.
Only the formations inside the final three strongholds fed straight into the Alliance’s actual headquarters.
They were also the ugliest to navigate, each of those three held over a dozen identical small-scale formations sitting side by side in a row.
Out of that dozen, exactly three worked.
And the only difference between those three was that each one put you down inside a completely different headquarters.
Because the Heavenly Demon Alliance kept three of them.
Which route a member could safely walk came down to rank and clearance, nothing else.
Low-level operatives, the Aelyra tier, had clearance for one correct path.
They memorized their sequence, walked it, and arrived at Headquarters One, always.
Emperor-realm core members held two correct paths, one to Headquarters One, one to Headquarters Two.
The two sites sat in completely different regions of the continent, separated by a distance that would take an army seasons to cross.
If Headquarters One were ever exposed or overrun, Headquarters Two wouldn’t feel a thing.
And if Two came under attack, the Demon Emperors stationed there could trigger the internal formations and evacuate to One.
