Charging in right now was terrible timing.

Eighty percent he had walked straight into a death match.

"Hm?"

A few seconds later, Orathis’s aura dropped off a cliff.

He’d been too eager to save her, and the two Upper-Tier Beast Ancestors of the Kunpeng Beast Tribe had opened him up for it.

Soren dropped his plan to go back through the portal.

He flicked his cape back, he walked for the exit.

Orathis was his mount.

Beat the dog and you’d better look at who owns it.

Those two Kunpeng Beast Ancestors were tired of living.

Aside from Soren himself, Orathis was the strongest fighter Black Dragon Mountain had, a shade stronger even than Victoria at Middle-Tier Demon Ancestor.

If a pair of outsiders killed him, what was that but a slap across Soren’s face?

Crushing the Heaven Demon Ancestor and the Earth Demon Ancestor had been easy, suppressing two Immemorial Upper-Tier Beast Ancestors was not a guarantee, but with the Strategy Encyclopedia, his Innate Ancestor Techniques and his Demonic Forms, walking away in one piece wouldn’t be a problem.

Stepping out meant showing his face and tearing up whatever peace still existed between him and the Kunpeng Beast Tribe.

Didn’t matter.

Soren’s philosophy had always been simple, defy anyone under heaven.

He had beaten the Great Demon Emperor of the Endless Demonic Domain into the dirt.

He had put his heel through the Heavenly Demon Alliance.

Did he look like a man who feared one beast tribe?

Running an empire took strength, and it took standing behind your own people.

Orathis was his dragon.

If it had been some nobody from Black Dragon Mountain getting stomped, he would still be walking up those stairs.

Soren didn’t care who was in the right.

The line was the line.

Nobody bullies his people, ever.

Above the stronghold, out in the open waste.

Not a blade of grass grew here, even wild beasts kept clear.

Now it was a mess of crossing light and afterimages tearing through the void, throwing up rolling tides of dirt, rivers of sand went up like waterfalls running backward, screaming toward the sky.

Every time two silhouettes met, the sound came out like tribulation lightning from an Ancestor Trial.

High up, spatial rifts opened across the battlefield, space collapsed in on itself.

Down at ground level, the earth split into chasms. Bare mountains flattened to plains inside a heartbeat. Valleys turned over and flew, becoming dark new peaks where nothing had stood.

Underground water veins detonated from the pressure, Geysers speared upward, stitching ground to clouds.

Spirit energy and spiritual energy collided, lighting cyclones across the wasteland, the storm widened by the second, each rotation twisted the space it passed through into knots.

Boom!

A detonation tore the sky.

Out of the crossing beams a black silhouette fell from the clouds like a meteor and hit the ground.

The earth buckled, a pillar of fire went up.

A crater over a hundred thousand meters across opened across the waste.

At the bottom, Orathis dropped out of his black dragon form and back into human shape.

Both hands clamped over his chest, face pulled into a knot, he groaned through his teeth.

He wanted to get back into the sky.

Half his torso was ruined, the white bone of his left leg sat exposed to the air, his left shoulder and arm had been turned to blood mist by a punch before he ever hit the ground.

He couldn’t be bothered with any of it.

Grinding his teeth until they creaked, he threw his head back, golden dragon eyes locking on the great white dragon still fighting both Beast Ancestors in the churning cloud.

A woman’s scream came tearing out of the clouds.

She had taken something critical of her own.

The white silhouette was blasted backward by a fist.

Still tumbling, she lost the strength to hold her beast form and fell toward Orathis.

She came down too fast, her tall frame dropped with an edge sharper than any sword.

Behind her she opened a straight spatial fissure through the sky, inside that tear, void energy twisted and churned, like the open jaws of some primordial thing eating everything it passed.

"Sis!"

Orathis leaped and caught the woman in the white dress.

The inertia took them both, they skated backward across the dirt.

Ten thousand meters later they ground to a stop.

Orathis brought up a heavy mouthful of dark blood, it splattered across the woman’s snow-white dress and soaked in red.

Her brows drew tight. She turned and got an arm under him as his breathing went shallow.

"You stupid brat!"

"Who told you to come here?"

"Well?"

"When I told you to get out of here, did you go deaf?"

Her words came out like knives, deep in her eyes there was nothing but blame turned inward.

Orathis gave her a weak, foolish grin.

"Sis... it’s good to see you alive."

"I really thought you were dead."

"You’re my own sister, after all..."

Smack!

Her backhand cracked across his face.

Orathis lay there stunned.

Sis! Have you lost your mind? Your little brother nearly got himself killed dragging you out of there! Forget the tearful reunion, why are you hitting me?

He complained without hesitation. "Sis! I’m half dead already, could you go a little easy?"

"Easy?"

"When a big sister beats her little brother, who under heaven gets an opinion? Do you have an opinion?"

The glare eased as she looked down at the state of him, something almost gentle came into her voice.

"If I don’t hit you a few times now..."

"...I’m afraid we’ll both die out here today and I’ll never get to do it again, the way I did when we were small."

"Sis... you’re really pretty when you’re gentle."

"If you showed people this side of yourself..."

"...you wouldn’t be in a situation where no man dares come within ten miles of you."

Those particular words found a nerve.

The woman in white drove her fist into Orathis’s face without pausing to consider it.

He spun a full turn through the air, the blood coming off him opened out bright as fireworks.

"Sis! You’re named Liana! You should be a gentle grace! There’s nothing gentle about you!"

"The old man’s naming sense was a pile of..."

Before he could finish, the two Upper-Tier Beast Ancestors of the Kunpeng Beast Tribe stepped down out of the void.
