A beam of light streaked through the vacuum of space between the galaxies of the Olympus Universe, crossing the vast emptiness at blinding speed, moving so quickly that most deities wouldn’t even realise it had passed until it was already far beyond them.
It raced through a major supercluster before entering the gravitational field of one of the largest galaxies in the western region of the universe, one containing trillions of stars.
The true form of that light beam was a golden chariot, blazing with the power of a star and pulled through the vacuum of space by several Pegasi.
However, the one riding upon the chariot was not its owner, the Olympian Sun god who ruled over music, poetry, and possessed the power of foresight.
Instead, seated upon the chariot was his brother, the Messenger god of Olympus, Hermes.
A little over a hundred years earlier, Apollo had been slain by the King of the Underworld, Hades, his soul extracted from his dying body, and to this day, he was still imprisoned within the depths of Tartarus.
However, Tartarus spanned a region as vast as an entire galactic cluster, making it far too immense a region of space-time for anyone unfamiliar with it to navigate.
Because of this, around fifty years earlier, when Hermes had infiltrated the Underworld to steal back the souls of his brother and sister, Ares and Athena, he had been unable to locate Apollo’s soul, along with Dionysus’ soul.
In fact, if not for the congregation of Titans in the region where Ares’ soul had been thrown into Tartarus, and the fact that Athena’s soul had been placed in Persephone’s garden, Hermes wouldn’t have been able to locate either of them and would’ve had no choice but to retreat empty-handed.
However, although Hermes had succeeded in retrieving their souls, it had not come without a price.
The guard dog of the Underworld, Cerberus, had bitten Hermes, afflicting the Messenger god with a vicious curse that persisted even to this day.
As Hermes rode Apollo’s chariot, he thought back to the reaction of the one he was heading to meet, Hestia, upon discovering that Zeus had ordered Heracles to lead an army into the Underworld when Hades opened it in accordance with their agreement, while Hermes had secretly entered to steal back the souls of his children.
Hestia had been furious.
"We barely managed to convince him to unseal the Underworld so the universe can function properly, and then you go ahead and do this?!"
Hermes had been barely conscious at the time, in tremendous pain from the vicious curse inflicted by Cerberus’s bite. Even so, he could hear Hestia’s loud voice as clear as day when she pointed at him and screamed at Zeus and Poseidon.
"Look at this! Tell me, do you really think this can be dispelled?!"
Turning toward Helios, who was also present, she continued, "What about you, Helios? Can you dispel that? Huh? Can you?"
Then she looked at Metis and continued, "And you, Metis, I expected better from you. How did you hear about this plan and not tell these stupid brothers of mine about the obvious red flags?"
Zeus immediately frowned at Hestia’s words and opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say anything, Hestia snapped her gaze back to him.
"Be quiet for a moment, Zeus, and think! Zeus, think! The tolerance Hades had for you, for all of us, over these past hundreds of thousands of years is completely gone! Hades doesn’t see us as family anymore.
To him, we’re enemies, and we understand little to nothing about his current capabilities, which is a terrible state of affairs when dealing with someone who considers us his enemies.
"Did you forget that I told you that Hades could’ve been using cosmic energy to resist the influence of the Law of Causality? With the way he was, he could’ve chosen to leave the Underworld sealed for decades longer and would’ve been completely fine.
But yet, he still unsealed it with that last bit of goodwill he had left for us, and you went ahead and sent a goddamn army to his doorstep."
Hestia facepalmed as she said this, irritated by the actions she had just described.
Clicking her tongue, she looked back at Zeus and said, "Do you really still think you’re the strongest, Zeus? Well, if no one has broken the news to you, then let me be the one to remind you of the current reality.
You are NOT the strongest in Olympus anymore, Zeus. Hades is. The same Hades who possesses the power of cosmic energy that our father did. The same Hades who possesses the power of cosmic energy that Gaia did."
Hestia’s mention of Gaia immediately caused her brothers’ expressions to change, but she ignored it and continued speaking.
"Hades possesses the same cosmic energy that made our father essentially immortal, to the point that even after you, with your own hands, together with Poseidon and Hades, cut him into a thousand pieces, his body was still alive.
He has our father’s scythe, can use the scythe’s full power, and most importantly, has power surpassing the known limits of the Monarch Realm.
And that’s the person whose doorstep you sent Heracles to lead an army to."
Hestia scoffed after speaking, shaking her head before turning around and walking away.
"Congratulations, Zeus. You’ve destroyed the last bit of goodwill Hades had for us and completely ruined our chances of getting Apollo and Dionysus back."
Gesturing toward Hermes, Hestia concluded, "And now your son is cursed permanently because that curse wasn’t inflicted by just Cerberus.
Cerberus was merely the medium. The one who really cursed Hermes was Hades, and last I checked, there’s no one in this universe who possesses a Curse Authority at the Monarch Rank and also has cosmic energy capable of dispelling that thing on Hermes’ leg."
After saying that, Hestia left Dodekapolis, and since then, she had not set foot anywhere within central Olympus.
In fact, Hestia had reduced her involvement in the war to the bare minimum level of support, shutting herself away within her own territory.
As a result, if anyone wanted to contact her for anything, they had to go in person, which was why Hermes, the Messenger god, was now travelling to Hestia’s territory to inform her of the latest developments in the war, the actions Olympus intended to take, and to request her cooperation, as shameless as that request might be.
When he got closer to Hestia’s territory, Hermes gradually slowed enough that deities on the planets within the galaxy he was crossing could actually see him pass overhead as a streak of light shooting across the skies.
On one such planet, a man wearing black hooded robes that covered his entire body, their hems slightly ragged, walked across the barren land.
Powerful winds battered his body and robes as he reached up with one hand to hold his hood over his face.
He then looked up into the night sky, watching the streak of light that was Apollo’s chariot as it crossed the vacuum of space.
Taking a deep breath, the man extended both hands, murky grey divinity condensing in his palms to summon an intricately designed bow made of divine iron, a weapon that any of the Twelve Olympians would recognise as the Sun god’s golden bow.
He drew back the string, and an arrow of stellar light manifested.
Raising the bow, he aimed it toward the approaching chariot, holding that position for several seconds before eventually adjusting his aim toward the empty space ahead of the streak of light, the point it would pass through within a few seconds.
Holding that stance for another moment and taking a deep breath, he released the arrow, sending it shooting through space at light speed with the brilliance of a miniature star.
In less than a second, the golden arrow of divinity collided with the chariot, and the resulting explosion unleashed a blinding flash of light comparable to a hypernova.
Following the bright flash were immense bursts of divinity and radiation that spread in every direction as the destructive blast completely engulfed that region of space, bathing the dark skies of the planet from where the man had fired the bow in so much light that night turned to day.
As he watched the explosion, the man lowered the bow and held it by his side in silence, but just as he did that, a voice echoed from behind him.
"Hmm, I think you missed."
