Despite Hermes’ speed boost, the hooded man was able to react every single time, blocking each of Hermes’ attacks.
’No, he’s not reacting. He’s acting before I do!’
The hooded man condensed a grey whip and lashed it across space toward the location Hermes was about to fly into, aiming for where his legs would’ve been.
Noticing this, Hermes immediately halted his momentum and moved back.
’Just as I thought. He’s predicting my movements before I even make them.’
Hermes spun his staff and knocked the whip aside before the serpents coiled around it shot forward, attempting to sink their fangs into the hooded man’s shoulders.
The whip immediately dissolved, its divinity condensing into a pair of short swords, which the hooded man used to meet the serpents’ fangs with a rapid series of slashes before throwing one of the swords directly at Hermes.
Halfway through its flight, the construct detonated into an enormous sphere of compressed fire and death law energies, but Hermes, his body cloaked in green fire, burst through the explosion unharmed, his staff thrusting straight toward the hooded man’s chest with enough force to crack the surrounding space.
A grey barrier of condensed divinity materialised in the instant before impact, but Hermes’ staff punched straight through it.
The weapon continued into the hooded man’s shoulder, crushing bone before tearing through the flesh completely and emerging from their back in a spray of murky grey blood.
’Grey? Is this guy some kind of Angel?’
Hermes pulled his staff back and immediately thought of one of the few species capable of bleeding grey when he saw the blood spray, but that train of thought was interrupted as the power of the universal law of life immediately erupted from the wound, expelling the green divinity within Hermes’ flames and beginning to repair the damage.
’This guy has a High-Rank Authority of Life too?!’
The flesh regenerated almost as quickly as Hermes had destroyed it, and the moment he saw that, Hermes immediately poured more energy into his weapon and swung it toward the hooded man’s neck.
At that same moment, the hooded man swept their free hand outward, and grey cosmic winds swirled through space, loaded with enormous amounts of divinity that crashed into Hermes from every direction, forcing his attack to miss.
Mixed within those winds were torrents of grey fire, immense rivers of water, and colossal masses of stone, every attack infused with the power of a High-Rank Authority of Death, each one capable of corroding both flesh and soul if allowed to make contact.
Hermes vanished the instant his attack failed, leaving emerald trails across space as he flashed out of the area of effect in an instant.
By that time, the hooded man had completely regenerated the damage to their shoulder, then raised both hands, swirling the divinity-laden winds into a massive vortex that crashed toward Hermes.
Hermes immediately came to a stop, turned around, and unleashed a torrent of flames with his Viridian Fire Authority, the green fire engulfing the wind vortex in a blinding explosion.
Without waiting for the blast to clear, Hermes tore through the expanding inferno faster than its light could spread.
His staff slashed through space, smashing straight through the hooded man’s divinity barriers with enough power to shatter every layer in a single blow, the impact sending the hooded man flying through the vacuum and into the atmosphere of a distant planet.
Just as the hooded man flipped through the air and regained their balance, the space behind them distorted, and Hermes’ serpents lunged out of the distortion, finally succeeding in burying their venom-coated fangs into the hooded man’s shoulder.
"!"
The hooded man’s body froze in mid-air like stone and began to fall toward the ground, and Hermes appeared above them, swinging his staff downward and tracing another green arc that slashed across their chest, sending grey blood scattering through the vacuum.
Just as Hermes expected, the glow of the law of life manifested over the wounded area, but what happened next exceeded his expectations as the glow of the law of death appeared at the same time, devouring the anti-regeneration poison the serpents had deposited into the hooded man’s body with their bites.
’Tsk...’
Clicking his tongue in annoyance, Hermes charged after the hooded man as they fell toward the planet’s surface, smashing a massive crater into the crust.
Hermes waved a hand, clearing away the clouds of dust and smoke created by the impact and revealing the hooded man on their feet with a spear of divinity in their hands.
They thrust the spear upward toward Hermes, who easily avoided the death law-coated tip and smashed his staff into the spear’s shaft, knocking it aside before his armoured fist crashed onto the top of the hooded man’s head with enough force to fold the surrounding space inward.
The impact blasted the hooded man straight through the planet, their body bursting out from the opposite side as the celestial body exploded, but even within that explosion, they conjured another weapon with divinity, a whip that cracked loudly as it lashed toward Hermes’ legs.
’Again! He’s going after my legs again!’
Hermes boosted his speed with Talaria and avoided the irregular lashes of the whip, and realising he wouldn’t catch Hermes this way, the hooded man detonated the whip before summoning Apollo’s golden bow.
The string was drawn in one smooth motion, three arrows manifesting at the same time before they were released toward Hermes’ knees.
’Authority of Alacrity!’
Hermes’ perception of the reality around him slowed as he charged toward the approaching arrows, knocking the first two aside with his staff before deflecting the third with his armoured elbow.
However, that moment of contact as he deflected it was enough for the arrow to explode into death flames that immediately began spreading across his arm.
Hermes grimaced as green divinity flooded into his left arm, suppressing the death law energy before it could spread beyond his elbow.
The hooded man dismissed Apollo’s bow and reduced the distance between them to almost nothing, a sword appearing in an instant and slashing across Hermes’ burning left arm.
The sword’s second slash was blocked by Hermes’ staff, the collision releasing waves of law energy powerful enough to reduce entire star systems into expanding clouds of stellar fire.
Hermes and the hooded man swung their weapons again and again at faster-than-light speeds while racing through space, stars collapsing beneath the pressure of their exchanges.
Any nearby planets shattered from the aftershocks alone, and enormous clouds of cosmic dust scattered across millions of kilometres as the two combatants tore through space toward the outer reaches of the galaxy without slowing for a single moment.
One weapon after another appeared within the hooded man’s grasp.
Swords became axes, which then became hammers before dissolving into spears.
The spears scattered into dozens of knives that exploded into walls of grey fire carrying the energy of the law of death before immediately condensing into a barrier capable of blocking Hermes’ next attack.
Hermes’ response to the hooded man’s constantly changing weapons was simple, overwhelming speed.
His staff spun through space like a green cyclone while the twin serpents repeatedly sprang from its length, forcing the hooded man to defend against attacks arriving from multiple directions.
Whenever the snakes succeeded in sinking their fangs into flesh, anti-regeneration poison spread through the wound before the law of death devoured it, allowing the law of life to restore the damage within seconds.
Neither side could afford even the slightest mistake.
Hermes’ fists crashed into the hooded man’s ribs, caving them inward before another blow split open their shoulder.
The hooded man responded by conjuring a great sword infused with earth and fire law energies, slashing repeatedly across Hermes’ torso and drawing streams of brilliant golden blood that drifted through space like liquid sunlight.
Hermes regenerated the shallow wounds immediately, but the deeper cut refused to close completely, dense law energy embedded within it continuously interfering with his healing.
The two figures collided again and again, every collision producing enough force to erase another section of the surrounding galaxy, entire stellar regions disappearing beneath overlapping waves of green and murky grey divinity that continued expanding deeper into the darkness of space.
Hermes, spinning with the momentum generated by one of those collisions, used his Authority of Momentum to multiply the force behind his next attack before bringing his staff down once again.
The hooded man had already started moving before Hermes even completed the swing, parrying the attack with a shield of grey divinity before slipping around Hermes and summoning a flaming sword, the blade carving across Hermes’ back, tearing through his armour and opening a deep wound across his shoulder as golden blood scattered through space.
