Soon, the dishes that Xu Xiangbei and the others ordered were brought up.
The soy milk was served in a bowl, fairly large, steaming with a sweet aroma. The meat bun exuded a scent of meat, each one the size of a child’s fist, smooth and white on the surface, approximately eight in a basket.
Xu Xiangbei watched as Zhou Fuya brought them up, wanting to greet her, but before he could speak, she left to take orders for another table.
He glanced around the room; Zhou Fuya was essentially the only one taking and serving orders, back and forth, like a beautiful scene weaving through the store.
"Hey, doesn’t this place have other waiters?" Xu Xiangbei asked curiously while sipping his soy milk.
"I’ve been here a few times, there are no other waiters, just her and her grandfather. Fuya’s grandfather is inside cooking, so she has to take and serve orders herself—it’s quite exhausting!"
The one answering him was Guo Lijun, while Qin Xue next to her was already indulging herself, ignoring Xu Xiangbei completely. Before long, she had eaten about a basket of meat buns.
Finally unable to resist, Xu Xiangbei also started eating the meat buns. As soon as he took a bite, he felt a chewy texture, followed by a crispy meat fragrance filling his mouth, oily but not greasy, with thin skin and ample meat.
"Not bad! Not bad!" Xu Xiangbei praised while eating, soon finishing two baskets.
"Of course, Zhouji Restaurant is a century-old store, said to be two or three hundred years old. The buns here are the best in the area, no comparison. The soy milk is great too, give it a try!"
Qin Xue had almost finished eating, her mouth greasy, hastily wiped it with a napkin, then lowered her head to start drinking soy milk. As she drank, she introduced the old store’s history to Xu Xiangbei.
"Indeed, this soy milk is good!" Xu Xiangbei drank several more sips, finding it sweeter with a strong rich fragrance. A bit like milk but with a special bean taste, endlessly aftertaste, making him want more.
Most of the people in the store, like Xu Xiangbei, were enjoying this culinary journey.
However, at this moment, a voice interrupted them.
"Bang!"
A man with a knife scar on his face, wearing a white T-shirt, a burly physique, arms the size of a bowl, muscularly toned. He wore ripped jeans below, stepping on slippers, around 35 years old.
He was called Zhao Shiping, the gang leader around here. Two young men in their 20s sat beside him, with short hairstyles, not as messy as him but not much better.
"Call the boss over!" Zhao Shiping slapped the table, shouting loudly, his facial flesh trembling.
"Brother, is there something wrong?" Zhou Fuya immediately stepped forward, asking sweetly.
"Hmph, look at the buns you made, I found a fly and ate half of it!" Zhao Shiping said, picking up a fly, leaving only the head.
"This, brother, isn’t there a misunderstanding? Our food is very clean, how could there be a fly?"
Zhou Fuya had never encountered this situation before, her face flushed with anxiety.
"Misunderstanding, am I deliberately deceiving you?" Zhao Shiping’s tone grew worse, scanning Zhou Fuya up and down with his thieving eye.
"No, brother, maybe it’s your first time dining here. Our customers can attest, our buns are very clean, such a situation has never occurred!"
Feeling helpless, Zhou Fuya turned a pleading glance toward nearby customers. Many people subconsciously lowered their heads, not daring to meet Zhao Shiping’s gaze.
"Yes! Brother, I often eat here; their buns are clean and wouldn’t have such an issue, maybe you misunderstood?"
Finally, a young man stood up, clearly trying to leave a good impression on Zhou Fuya, attempting to be a hero.
"Snap!" Scar-faced man didn’t pause for a second, slapped the young man, making him spit blood.
"You can eat nonsense, but you cannot speak nonsense. The past was the past, the present is the present, just because you didn’t eat it before doesn’t mean it’s not here now. Am I the kind of person who lies?"
Immediately, after he finished speaking and surveyed the room, no one dared to stand up.
The young man clutched his face, groaning, wanting to fight back but not daring, he could only return to his seat in frustration.
"Little girl, what do you think should be done? I ate a fly!" Zhao Shiping’s eyes showed desire, his tone hinting at teasing.
"Well, let’s forget about your food expenses!" Zhou Fuya gritted her teeth, speaking helplessly. She gazed at their table with seven or eight baskets of buns and several bowls of soy milk, knowing they would lose hundreds of yuan again today, and this was all hard-earned money!
"Forget money, just like that? You must compensate!" Zhao Shiping extended his hand aggressively, demanding.
"Why?" Zhou Fuya bit her lip, tried hard to argue, her gaze full of anger. She knew this group was looking for trouble, not only wanting to dodge the bill but extort money.
"My brother ate this fly, now his stomach aches. I ate it too, nothing now, but who knows if I’ll need hospitalization soon. What if something serious happens, what then? If you don’t compensate, where will we get the medical fee to go to the hospital for a check-up? At least, we need a stomach wash, a full-body check-up, how can we manage without a few thousand yuan? It’s your responsibility!"
Zhao Shiping spoke, giving a signal to his sidekicks, and they understood, lying on the table, clutching their stomachs, moaning.
"Ah, my stomach, it hurts, it must be spoiled!"
"Yes, this unscrupulous shop, we’ll sue it, we’ll make them jailed!"
The two sidekicks held their stomachs, moaning, threatening words spewing as well. A keen eye could see they were pretending.
But everyone in the room still bowed their heads, eating buns, acting nonchalantly.
Seeing their behavior, Zhou Fuya was so anxious she nearly cried, arguing persistently, "You just want to extort money; how can people like you exist? Our buns are very clean!"
The people from the kitchen finally heard the commotion and came out; it was an old grandfather.
He wore a white chef’s coat, an apron, a white chef’s hat. A few strands of hair protruded from the hat, now white. His facial eye sockets somewhat sunken but overall looking okay. Yet a bit hunched over, clearly showing age, roughly around 60.
This old grandfather was Zhou Fuya’s grandfather, Zhou Huaming, the current owner of Zhouji Store.
"Sir, if you don’t believe it, you can come into our kitchen and see. It’s up to standard and clean, you won’t find the problem you’re mentioning!" Zhou Huaming said with a sincere face.
"Who doesn’t know you just cleaned it, inviting me in to check now, obviously nothing will be found. I don’t care, my brother ate a fly, and his stomach aches, needs hospital check-up, what will you do about it?" Zhao Shiping played the rogue.
"No, sir, we’re just a small business. Busy all day, struggling to earn little money, and we earn with a conscience. My Zhou family has been around for hundreds of years; my great grandfather made buns for the emperor of the Great Qing Dynasty; how could such a situation occur, that would be decapitation!"
Knowing they wanted to extort money, Zhou Huaming had no recourse. He could only resort to history, hoping the ancestor’s glory might frighten them.
"Don’t pride yourself on old age, historical long-standing means nothing! Perhaps generations have become corrupt, cut corners even worse on hygiene. Character decay led to this situation, making us eat flies!" Zhao Shiping didn’t heed him, continued arguing, unwavering.
"Sir, we do business with integrity, wouldn’t do such things, otherwise Zhouji Store would have closed long ago!"
"Who knows what you’re really made of inside? Anyway, the fact is right here, no amount of arguing will help!" Zhao Shiping said, already starting to curse.
Upon hearing someone curse her grandfather, Zhou Fuya immediately got angry, shouting, "Grandpa, let’s not bother with him, they obviously want to extort money, just call the police!"
