Gorgeous Female Tenants

Chapter 658: Scum Among the Police

Zhou Fuya didn’t say a word and grabbed her phone, dialing the police station directly to report the incident.

Zhao Shiping, however, remained indifferent, acting as if victory was within his grasp. He sat on the table, still swaggering while eating a bun. In fact, he sent a text message secretly, which went unnoticed by most. His expression made everyone grind their teeth in frustration.

It took only a few minutes before police officers arrived in a patrol car. Zhou Fuya had called the Celestial Mansion Avenue Yulin Street Branch. It was only about a kilometer away, so the efficiency was quite high.

Three people got out of the police car, one of them around 30 years old, with a square face, slightly yellowish complexion, some dark spots, and a tall stature, which made him seem unfriendly. He walked ahead, obviously leading the group. Following him were two policemen about 25 years old, clad in uniforms, exuding righteousness.

"I’m Officer Wang Huaiming from the Celestial Mansion Avenue Yulin Street Branch. What happened here?" The yellow-faced man first pulled out his badge, proving his identity, and then inquired.

About a minute later, he understood the ins and outs of the situation. He glanced at Zhao Shiping discreetly, and the two exchanged a knowing smile. Although this went unnoticed by others, Xu Xiangbei clearly caught it.

Zhou Fuya slightly furrowed her brow, realizing this matter wouldn’t end well. However, she decided not to speak up prematurely or get involved, planning to step in as a hero at the most critical moment and see what tricks they might use.

"Zhou Huaming, isn’t it? People are now suspecting that your bun filling is not clean and that there are flies inside. How do you explain this?"

Wang Huaiming ignored Zhao Shiping and directly questioned the old shopkeeper, scrutinizing Zhou Fuya with his gaze. He had a hint of desire, deeply hidden, yet it didn’t escape Xu Xiangbei’s eyes.

"Officer, our Zhouji Store is a century-old establishment. We have always adhered to honesty, and the health department’s inspection of us has been rated AA. How could such a thing happen?"

Zhou Huaming’s eyebrows knitted as he spoke passionately. For an old brand like theirs, integrity and reputation are paramount, so this incident was deeply distressing for him.

"But someone really found a fly in their food. What do you propose to do?" Wang Huaiming insisted, frowning slightly.

"I’ve been in the bun business for over 40 years, and nothing like this has ever happened. This is an insult to my reputation! Officer, ask anyone here; they are all regular customers. Ask them if anything like this has ever happened?" Zhou Huaming’s face turned red with indignation as he spoke.

Several customers wanted to speak up, but Zhao Shiping’s stern gaze suppressed them. Eager to support Zhou, they ultimately stayed in their seats.

"Let me tell you, you’d better keep quiet. It’s said that Wang Huaiming’s old man is a retired police chief. That’s why he pulled some strings to get into the police force. Otherwise, he used to be a hooligan, you see, hanging out with Zhao Shiping. Since becoming a policeman, he’s been bullying the weak and oppressing us small citizens. This time, they’re obviously colluding. I reckon Shopkeeper Zhou will have to cough up some money!"

"Yeah, right? I almost stood up but knew they had connections, so I didn’t dare. If I had some background, I wouldn’t fear them. Zhouji’s buns are still delicious, and the shopkeeper is a decent fellow, very honest!"

"It’s better to avoid trouble when possible!"

Whispers reached Xu Xiangbei from around, the sound hushed, confined to a few tables. Fortunately, having practiced Martial Arts, his hearing was keen enough to catch it.

Old Zhou Huaming looked around, seeing no one supporting him, and seemed older and more drained, muttering, "The world has changed; people aren’t like they were in my youth."

"Officer, they’re obviously extorting money. It’s impossible for there to be a fly in our buns!" Zhou Fuya held her grandfather’s frail body, gritting her teeth determinedly.

"Young lady, you have to speak with evidence. Without proof, don’t speak recklessly. They indeed found a fly in your bun; that’s evidence. You can’t prove it wasn’t there. So, no matter where this goes, you’re at fault. Moreover, his two brothers got sick; if a life is lost, it’s no small matter!" Wang Huaiming’s eyes never left Zhou Fuya’s body, his tone carrying a hint of threat and menace.

"Officer Wang makes a valid point. Look at my two brothers; they’re almost dead and need to go to the hospital immediately for a full examination. How about this, give me ten thousand yuan, and I’ll take my brothers for a checkup, and we can settle this matter here!" Zhao Shiping said, extending his large hand in a demand for money.

"Ten thousand?" Zhou Fuya exclaimed incredulously.

"What’s wrong, little beauty, do you think that’s too little?" Zhao Shiping sneered.

"Young lady, ten thousand yuan isn’t much. We’re talking about two lives here!" Wang Huaiming chimed in, supporting the proposition.

"You lot?" Zhou Fuya pointed at them, her pretty face trembling.

"What about us?" Zhao Shiping laughed heartily.

"You’re clearly conspiring to extort money from us! I’m telling you, it’s wishful thinking!"

Old Zhou Huaming’s face flushed red with rage as he shouted passionately. He stepped forward to argue, but Zhao Shiping shoved him aside, sending him sprawling to the ground, teetering on the brink of unconsciousness.

"Grandpa, how are you?" Zhou Fuya quickly rushed to support her grandfather, finding him gasping for air, looking like he might pass away at any moment.

"My grandfather has a heart condition, and this is murder. If anything happens to him, I certainly won’t let you off!"

"Hmph, I’m acting in self-defense. Besides, this old man is so aged, he could pop off any day. You want to pin that on me? Forget it. Pay up; this matter isn’t settled yet!" Zhao Shiping initially appeared fearful but started speaking louder and louder, as if psyching himself up.

"Booohoo..." Zhou Fuya cried, her tears flowing like rain, continuously tapping Zhou Huaming’s chest, then hurriedly pulled out a box of medicine from him, ready to administer it.

"Will someone help me call an ambulance!" She pleaded between feeding him the pills.

"Stop pretending. I’m telling you, give me the money already!" Zhao Shiping said viciously.

"Yeah, young lady, for a mere ten thousand yuan, you can’t have your grandfather acting dead. Old man, get up already!" Wang Huaiming spoke, bracing his foot to kick Zhou Huaming on the ground.

"Heartless!"

"Morally bankrupt!"

...

People around kept sighing, but no one stepped forward to help or called for an ambulance. In the end, it was Guo Lijun who called for the ambulance.

"How can you do this?" Qin Xue and Guo Lijun, unable to bear it any longer, stood up.

"Oh, beautiful ladies! They’re definitely having this old man fake death to dodge the payment. Don’t be fooled by their tricks, you know? I’ve seen plenty, don’t let them deceive you!" said Zhao Shiping, eyes lighting up as he gazed at Qin Xue, filled with desire and a strong drive to conquer.

"I reckon such dirty tricks were your doing all along. The fly was obviously caught by you to falsely accuse good people. If a life is lost, I’ll make sure you go to jail!" Qin Xue said, stepping forward to support Zhou Huaming alongside Zhou Fuya, helping him take his medication.

"Miss, don’t speak baselessly, or I’ll sue you for defamation. I’m an upright policeman, and the old man is clearly pretending, revealed by my discerning eyes. Don’t be led astray by them, okay?" Wang Huaiming stated righteously.

"You’re a disgrace to the police!" Xu Xiangbei decided it was time to speak, knowing he had to take action.

If he delayed any longer, old Zhou Huaming might pass away, and it wouldn’t be a heroic rescue, but a tragic farewell.
